I love the pearlescent filters and tend to use those at weddings when doing close up shots of the bride especially. I'm glad you mentioned these. I don't think people realize what a difference a matte box can make either!
Great video! I'm a videographer who started out about a year ago, I'm just now buying my own camera, etc-- these types of hints & tricks are exactly what I'm looking for! Just subscribed! 👍
Other than ND filters, the most useful filter is a polarizer. I've got a set of Cokin P filters that I probably should pull out and start playing with again.
We were always trained in doing stuff in post, always do it in post kind of mentality, very different from early days of cinematography when you have to decide right there and then how the footage should look because there was a limit to how much you could change afterwards. Relearning the old methods of cinema, the old methods of story telling and how to use a camera really changed my perspective in how its become a lost art. Yeah it takes more time to change filters on your camera and dial all the stuff in, but thats still LESS time than you will spend correcting everything in post if you had not.
I would like to add: the most common sizes of filters used in cinema (at least in the LA market) are 4x5.65, 138 round, and 6x6. 6x6 filtration is the least common of the three, but it’s still used for graduated filters, or “edge” filters as I like to call them. Other sizes used include 40.5 round, series 9, 4.5 round (measure close to a 95mm front), 5.6x5.6, and behind the lens filters which require special sensor baffles to attach the filter between rear element and sensor using magnets. Behind the lens filters (BTLF or IFM) are extremely expensive and are only really used on the highest end of filmmaking.
Great Tip Armando! Definitely love 4x4 filters for their versatility as well, I purchased a 77mm filter a long time ago with some step down rings. Only problem is, I then bought a lens with an 82mm diameter... So 4x4 filters are perfect to work on all lenses even though they can cost a bit more.
Armando Ferreira Saturday through Tuesday nights after 6pm, ask for me at the valet in front of Gladstones and PF Chang’s, I’ll hook it up with the parking! 🤙🏻
I hate that RUclips isn't recommending me your videos for some stupid reason. Also, no more notification alerts even tho I have the ringer on for.your channel! I hate and I'm tired of their algorithms. They just wanna praise the elites of tech like mkbhd, Linus, and etc. You deserve way more subs and viewers. I wanna say thank you for your content. I've learned A LOT from your channel especially with color editing and certain gear, and it helped me with my tech review channel. If you ever stop by New York, hope to bump in to you. Keep it Rollin bro!
Thanks for a very educational video! I just purchased a matte box and this taught me a lot. I'm looking at these filters on Adorama, Amazon and B&H... they're not cheap!
I have the same d5300, take in count the kit lens thread (55mm) is not that common, so if you're gonna invest in a whole kit ... perhaps go for a bigger size and then use step-up adapters.
Excellent video dude. I recently purchased the Tiffen Blackpool mist 1/2 and Twilight filter 1. Great looking footage. I also have the high tech formatt Movie black mist 1 which is the lowest grade they make and that one is really good as well.
wow! i never thought that was a filter,i tried to archive that in post ,what i do is to duplicate the footage -> add gaussian blur ->overlay / soft light blending mode -> and curve to lighten up the footage a lil bit. in this way you could get sharp edges but softens details which in skin etc...
A nice video congratulations. I have a curiosity, how does the machine behave in S mode? You've tried? For hiking videos I often use this mode, letting her decide the opening ... Do you think she could create problems with these filters?
Love this video, great conversation! I love a pro-mist filter. something Sometimes to get a super dreamy effect is put vaseline on a UV filter. Fun to get creative and dreamy for music videos.
Haha the good ol Vaseline trick. Funny we live in a world where we want 8K but yet we're modifying the lens to give us more of a 'filmic' look and in some cases even using vintage glass.
I like the Black Pro mist personally, the issue is stacking filters, sometimes I need ND, and Black pro-mist, makes me want a camera with internal ND. Also.. I’ll double check, but Roger Deakins didn’t use any special filters in Blade Runner 2049 I believe.. if I recall that Hollywood reporter round table correctly. So don’t feel the need to run out to buy these if you don’t have the money, these filters are kinda expensive lol. Edit* ok, I looked it up, he used a custom Tiffen Red filter! Source: ICG Also, these 4x4 are way better at stacking than screw ons. Thanks
This is a very well put-together video, but in my opinion, the filters you've shown seem kinda more like gimmicky effects rather than something that will make your footage look cinematic. I think good lighting, shallower depth of field, frame rate, and aspect ratio have a lot more to do with a "cinematic" look.
Hi, is the wall grey or blue ? I can't find any specific name to show to paint shop can you please reply, ( color grading might make it blue or something different from real ?)
What do you have for a mattebox? Or can you name one like the new polar pro but with the standard 4x4 filter and 2 Or 3 slots to use nd and cpl or pro mist?
Which one was your favorite filter?
The Twilight Graduated, thanks for recommending these!
The pearlescent seemed like the most versatile and balanced look. Great info!
I like them all, especially the gradual ND ones. Great video. Thanks for the inspiration 🤘🏻
I liked the pearlscent but 1/2 is a little too much for my taste. I'd like to try a 1/4. Also, check out a blue streak filter if you haven't tried it.
@@BCPaulVideoProd The blue streak is next on my list.
Recently I was thinking why no one talks about filters which is exactly how cinematic looks achieves in movies. Great review! Thanks
"no one talks about filters"
johnny walker or the other million things on set to help with the shot lol.
I love the pearlescent filters and tend to use those at weddings when doing close up shots of the bride especially. I'm glad you mentioned these. I don't think people realize what a difference a matte box can make either!
I've used these for photography but embarrassingly it's never crossed my mind to use these for video. Thanks for making this man!
I feel soooooo educated right now. I might have to incorporate this...
Great video! I'm a videographer who started out about a year ago, I'm just now buying my own camera, etc-- these types of hints & tricks are exactly what I'm looking for! Just subscribed! 👍
I stepped away on filters because not everyone uses them so I had no examples. Thanks for sharing this one.
"I’m greasy" 🤣
All these look amazing, another great video with great insight.
Larry Dickerson thanks for stopping by 👊🏼
The first one ..am liking the smooth cinematic look... And the Twilight one .👌👌👌
Oh man. I'm in love with these filters. Thanks for putting me on.
Other than ND filters, the most useful filter is a polarizer. I've got a set of Cokin P filters that I probably should pull out and start playing with again.
Looking for cokin filters and polarizer Alan which one's you have? I have a BMD Ursa
“Im pretty greasy” 🤣
I’ve found a new 3D printing project for a new video. Thanks mate
Your channel is so packed with information thank you!!!
So much info about something I didn't even know existed. This is great. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome video, Armando! The DP I often work with will literally just gaff gape these onto his lens. You don’t even need a fancy mount!
Vector Star is just my regular vision so I'm good on that.
This was SO good. Exactly the info I needed. THANK YOU! Well done.
Really nice video. Thank you.
Thank you so much Armando, your Videos are just amazing.
One of my favorite RUclips channel
Damn, I had no idea about all this. Good video brother.
Thanks Armando! You’re a legend! Like your simplistic approach! Very helpful!
Hi Armando ! Thanks for the great content ! What is the larger Matte Box that you are using (shown at 1:17)? Thank you !
Dear Armando, thank you sooooo much for this amazing explanation and informative video!
The first was my favorite. I was ready to purchase til I saw the price, I’ll still buy it within a couple weeks.

Great video. Filters are always overlooked but create the perfect image.
Very colourful.

Oh the thumbnail though. We need to have a support group for people that actually do that on purpose. 😂😂😂
Blown away by this video. Loved it. Thanks for sharing!

Rockin those LB locations! Love it
I just recently bought a matte box so these filters are going to come in handy, just the video I needed. Thank you Armando!
Hey Armando, thanks for the knowledge. You are a genius!
VERY informative !!! Thanks !!! 👊🏻🎃👊🏻
Learned something new.... MUST SPEND MONEY CUZ I NEED ITTTTT!!!
Ikr
Ay, honeycomb light modifier in clutch! The filters gave it away lol.
So good!
Full tilt 4inch x 4inch filters (100mm) are great, but pricey. Cokin Filters has a line of 84mm filters/holders that can be a lot less expensive.
Great Video Armando ..... Very valuable content
Thank you Armando!
I have added in my goals to make beautiful videos like yours.
Good to see that footage from The Pike, that’s where I work my night job.
I'm always there too ha!
Armando Ferreira Saturday through Tuesday nights after 6pm, ask for me at the valet in front of Gladstones and PF Chang’s, I’ll hook it up with the parking! 🤙🏻

Thanks for a very educational video! I just purchased a matte box and this taught me a lot. I'm looking at these filters on Adorama, Amazon and B&H... they're not cheap!
Great one! Nice to see my town featured in a video. LBC represent.
Thank you for the video, I just ordered twilight graduated after watching it.
I really need to try some of these filters. Great video. 🤠🍷
This is some dope content Mondo! I barely picked up my first ND filter a few weeks ago for the D5300. 😂 I need to look into this pro holder now.
I have the same d5300, take in count the kit lens thread (55mm) is not that common, so if you're gonna invest in a whole kit ... perhaps go for a bigger size and then use step-up adapters.
Thank you for a great video on filters, so I guess no just for landscape photography. Must try them on my video too.
Awesome tips Armando. Thank you.
Excellent introduction to nd filters for videos
Excelente video super útil
I hit liked as soon as your video started cause i love the quality😍🔥

Great video Armando!
Am goin' 2 Buy a arsenal kit set of Filters now
This is awsome. ! I honestly was expecting the 4x4's to be less than 150 lol. But seems like might be worth the 200+
This is truly awesome, thank you
Handy explanation!

Awesome VIdeo . This is something new ..
Beautiful.

Long Beach!! I live there
What an awesome review. Right to the point. You sir, need to put together an online class on filters and using with the c200

Love this video, great conversation! I love a pro-mist filter. something

Isn't that funny? Or the fact that we'll see people digitally manipulating footage to look older, or like VHS.
Wow..that's cool video !! Thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Cool...you gave me a lot of ideas 👍
I got a question. Between doing colour correction and using a filter. What is the best practice?
Wow that was an amazing vdo..thanks !!!
Great vid. Gave me some ideas.
Now I got to find something that'll fit over my Canon r82 along with the fisheye lens I use regularly.
I like the Black Pro mist personally, the issue is stacking filters, sometimes I need ND, and Black pro-mist, makes me want a camera with internal ND. Also.. Also, these 4x4 are way better at stacking than screw ons. Thanks
Rashad Ali with the pro holder you can stack filters. You're right, he did use filters.
Armando Ferreira yeah. The issue is that I have the screw on ones RN. :(
That is awesome information
Thanks👏🏼
The Twilight Graduated filter reminds me of the film Tangerine. Similar colors.
Ya really good
Sheesh those are expensive haha but super cool! Definitely plan on picking up one or two eventually
Dope😎

The filter for the Sunset was amazing, not sure about the filter for the skin though
Hi, is the wall grey or blue ? I can't find any specific name to show to paint shop can you please reply, ( color grading might make it blue or something different from real ?)
Don’t forget Pro mist or the fishnet trick for that soft look.
What do you have for a mattebox? Or can you name one like the new polar pro but with the standard 4x4 filter and 2 Or 3 slots to use nd and cpl or pro mist?
