  • Here's a video I made drivin' around in the big 'ol Burb. 6.2 naturally aspirated diesel in front of a 5 speed NV4500 transmission. I tried to cover all the basics, and get some good sound for those of y'all that want to hear the 'ol 6.2 roar.

      Don't be so figurative. There's nothing wrong with being literal. If people were never literal then this world would be so much more confusing and confused than it already is. Don't expect people to not be literal sometimes.

    I am glad i found this video. I just bought a 6.2 out of a M1009 and all my buddies are ragging on me for it saying that the engine will be un bearably slow, and too loud to. Hear yourself think in. Your suburban looks and sounds no slower than my land cruiser with the stock straight 6. And with carpet and a headliner will be quieter than this video.
    I think i am gonna be happy.

    • @theflatlander5185
      @theflatlander5185  9 лет назад +8

      Naturally aspirated the 6.2 is pretty damn slow, I have since regeared this truck to 4.56, and that made a pretty good difference in acceleration. If you actually put mufflers on the exhaust it's pretty quiet. When I still had the stock exhaust on her the roar of the tires was louder than the engine on the highway.

Also what SIZE clutch and flywheel are you using and where did you get it from? p.s I have a 1987 6.2L diesel too but with a blown automatic TH400 and i'm looking to do what you did!

    • @theflatlander5185

      I used an Advance Adapters 712577 bellhousing, and the slave cylinder bracket that can be bought to go with it. I DO NOT recommend using this setup, because it's designed for GM gas engines, and the starter is too big for the notch in the housing, and the slave cylinder bracket puts the slave up against the oil filter. The only reason I used that bellhousing was because the stock NV4500 bellhousing setup, the slave cylinder hits the driveshaft unless you have about a 3"-4" lift.

    Awesome suburban the straight pipes sound badass and I have always liked 6.2 diesels. I was curious about what bell housing a guy should use for a swap like that and what flywheel , clutch setup do you use? Also would that nv4500 bolt right up to a np205 transfer case? The reason I ask these questions is I wanna buy a 1985 gmc high sierra 1ton 4x4 and it has a 6.2 diesel , turbo 400 trans , np205 transfer with 4:10 gears. It just screams going 55 - 60 mph and I think the 5 speed overdrive would make that truck drivable at hwy speeds.

    • @theflatlander5185
      @theflatlander5185  10 лет назад +1

      Thanks! If I did this swap again, I'd find a 1995+ GM NV4500, and use the stock GM bellhousing. That bell uses an internal slave which will save the trouble of driveshaft clearance issues or having to use an aftermarket bell like I did. If that NP205 has the 6 bolt round pattern transmission adapter then it will bolt up to a 4x4 NV4500 no problem. I can't remember if they changed from the figure 8 to the round adapter in 85 or 86. If it's the figure 8 pattern you'll need to buy an adapter kit.

      The SM465 is a 4spd with a low non-syncro 1st gear. It's tough as nails, but not nearly as smooth shifting as the 4500, plus it does not have an OD gear.

    • @theflatlander5185
      @theflatlander5185  10 лет назад

      I have not messed with the EGR. I plan to turbocharge it this summer so it'll get deleted then. I think that the NV4500 is probably the best choice for all around use, but transmission selection really depends on what you want from the truck. If I did alot of towing with it I would want a NV5600 or a ZF6-650. If I wanted to get really good fuel mileage I'd go with a 6L80 automatic. The CB is a Galaxy model DX 919.

    @The Flatfender, what was your top speed with the 6.2 before you switch out for the NV4500. and i know these things were slow, but how exactly slow? i'm looking into buying a CUCV, and was wondering if its possible to cruise at highway speeds (65-70 or so) without the engine screaming its head off. ( of course, after having removed the govenor that i've heard about the CUCV's having).
    the reason why i'm looking into one is a combindation of things. these engines are renown for their reliability if not for their power (and seeing as i don't really haul heavy loads i won't be needing a 500+ lb-ft. Cummins anytime soon), and the fact that they get about the same mileage, if not a bit better, than my current 4.3 v6 s10.
    watching these videos like your's on RUclips has me wanting an old 6.2 for myself, because i love the rumbling clatter.
    also, have you upgraded your 6.2 to make a bit more power? i can't remember exactly if you mentioned it or not.

    • @theflatlander5185
      @theflatlander5185  9 лет назад

      +TD7497 The overdrive in the NV4500 is the same as what the 700R4 had, so there's no change in cruising speed. The biggest detriment to highway driving with the 6.2 is the lack of power in naturally aspirated form. It can run 75-80 on flat ground no problem, but when you get in the hills it's lucky to hold 60-65. CUCV's have 4.56 gears in them, which is what I have in this Suburban now, which helps some on acceleration, but 75 MPH is about 2800 RPM in overdrive, and I get about 14 MPG highway. I would imagine adding a turbo would help alot, but I plan on just doing a Cummins 12 valve swap in the future.

    • @SOG63v5
      @SOG63v5 9 лет назад

      staying old-school mechanical for simplicity in the future? i would do the same.
      as it sits now, though, is your 'Burb fairly livable to drive around ever day on county routes and tolerable on the rare road trip? or would i be better off to locate a Ford/International IDI or a 12v Cummins in the long run if i were to go diesel because of the fact they can keep up with the gassers of their era?
      yes, i do know that a Cummins would be the best bet in terms of power, and that is what i would want if i were to go diesel. but 1st-gen trucks are especially hard to come by in the rust belt up here. this is where i was contemplating a 6.2, because GM sold so many of these trucks that even up here i keep finding 6.2's in about half of the square trucks on craigslist, and most still have solid frames.
      thanks for sharing your insight.

      +TD7497 Believe it or not, my 6.2 keeps up with everything around.
      At red lights, the 6.2 takes off as fast as everything out there. If I'm in a hurry, it easily leaves everything behind.
      It wouldn't win races, but for daily driving, plenty of power.

    Diesel chevys aren't as popular is diesel dodges or diesel fords are.
    Sad isn't it?

    • @GMC6523
      @GMC6523 8 лет назад +1

      they went popular before because the 6.9l and the 7.3l International Diesel were 1st before the 5.9l Cummins was next before the Chevy Duramax came last.

    • @militarychevy711
      @militarychevy711 8 лет назад +4

      Uh, Cummins came WAY before the Powerstroke. lol

    • @nates9353
      @nates9353 7 лет назад +2

      International's 6.9 and 7.3 (indirect injection- IDI) came before the cummins. Powerstroke came around '95 and was direct injection. The 7.3 IDI and the 7.3 Powerstroke (direct injection) are nothing alike. The 6.2 GM diesel, made by Detroit Diesel, came a year before the 6.9 IDI (around '82). The duramax came in 2001.

      I meant the B-series Cummins, behind the Dodge Ram, not the company itself. They've been out since the 20s!

    • @theflatlander5185
      @theflatlander5185  9 лет назад +1

      That's one of the ash tray cup holders from LMC truck. The shifter would hit it when it was in the ash tray, so I took the try mount part off and bolted it to the dash.
