I was always kind of curious to that matchup. Archers with defense upgrade only was a new strat in 2017 in RTW multiplayer as the go to was attack upgrade. The idea was to out last enemy missiles especially against skirmish factions. So that they had less ammo for your infantry.
I am curious about the defense of shields vs. armor and defense skill in units. I presume defense skill does nothing against projectiles, but maybe when they have shields? Shields provide directional defense against projectiles that is tougher against armor but less so in hand to hand combat? I am wondering how Cappadocian Cavalry would do last against archers and in melee compared to cataphracts - same defense but cap has less armor and a shield. Would the armor piercing of head hurlers and units like desert cav only affect the armor stat and not the shield and make Cappadocian more tanky against them?
I don’t think Attack upgrades affects the accuracy of the Auxilia Archers honestly, but Defense likely negates any singular units to die and absorbs the damage before they attack again with retaliation and likely hits the lesser Defense but higher Attack archers leading them to die. Slowly the Defense Archers just simply won when the already slightly outnumbered the higher Attack Auxilia Archers.😊
Thanks for the comment. A good question. In some comments, people speak of hidden stat called lethality. I am not sure, if it exists but attack ups could affect it too :)

this differs for archers with more or less armor
such as pharaoh archers or the Barbarian Invasion top tier armored archers

After considering other infantry, 6(9?) Defence is not strong armour while 11(14?)is sharp enough eliminate enemy.

Defense dont matter much when the attack is much higher, it will be always more likely to kill than not.
Could you test on pesants Medival how much change on next armor upgrade?
