To my ears the great version here is sung in 'finnish' dialect of swedish - inte på riks svenska- so it is bit misleading to call it Finnish-Swedish folk song. Säkkijärven polkka is and remains an important part of Finnish folk lore. An amazing piece of history related to Säkkijärven polkka follows. FInland lost it's second largest city Viipuri in peace making after the Winter war in March 1940 to Soviet Union. The so called Continuation war started in June 1941. After the FInnish troops conquered back Viipuri, it was discovered that Russians had mined the mideval castle of Viipuri with bombs to be detonated by radio signals. To eliminate the danger of detonation, Säkkijären polkka was played 24h several days in frequencies Russians might be using until the bombs had been neutralized.
