The name derives from "STO," for Storz and "WA," for Walter (Founder Walter Storz). Walter is usually pronounced as a "Va" sound and the S would have the "Sh" sound. Since the o in Stowa has no umlaut, it would be pronounced as a normal "Oh" sound. So I think "Shtova" would be accurate indeed.

Wie denn? Ich habe 'überall' in Deutschland gelebt und das deutsche Walter wurde überall mit einem 'V' wie in 'Vase' ausgesprochen, was wiederum dem englischen 'V' wie z. B. in 'very' entspricht.

    • @chrisp4170
      @chrisp4170 5 лет назад +3

@@SteffenRoller You are of course, correct in explaining the pronunciation to an English speaker. For him in Germany, if he sees a "V" though, the pronunciation would be wholly different.

Steve, Im purchasing virtually the same watch you sent to TGV for review only with a brown strap. My question is when filling out the rotor style what did you chose for the "Create your own engraving" to simply get the standard Stowa markings you have on yours? Did you chose the empty white box in the drop down or what did you select? I just want the standard wording you have on yours. No engraving or special fonts. Thanks in advance.

Steve P hi, Ive just ordered this watch with the same rota, but I've just had an email from stowa telling me it only comes with the handmade rota, I was just wondering how you got that particular rota?
      regards

Good video Tristano. This is a very cool Fleiger watch. I have the 42mm Laco Memmingen , which is a hand wound mechanical. It is another beautiful German flight watch. The Germans really make some outstanding time pieces.

I just got my Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 today. It suits me down to the bone. I'm a technically minded man that reads a lot of military history, so this watch really spoke to me. Firstly, it's completely utilitarian (what you call a "tool watch"). But it's also of superb quality and has those 1930's stylistic touches such as the onion crown and beautiful blued hands. The brown rivetted strap is both masculine and historically correct. I would recommend the Flieger to anyone looking for historicity and top notch German quality. For what you're getting, the price is a bargain, and the service and options available by ordering straight from the factory really set Stowa apart from the competition. I ordered the date complication with the cool engraved rotor.

I would love to see a duel between Stowa and Laco, I think the Laco watches are really underrated. I don't think you can get any closer to the original than with a Laco.
    Great video.

I bought one of these recently on ebay, wonderful quality and style from Stowa. This review helped me to decide to go ahead and make the purchase. They show up quite often on ebay for $800-900 pre-owned. They are $1100 new. The standard strap that they include is very nice.

    Hey TGV,
As a long time fan of both you and Stowa it is really nice to see you reviewing a flieger of this brand. I've had some Stowa's over the years and i have never been disappointed. Even with the increased prices i still think Stowa offers a lot of value for money. Not to mention their customer service which is one of the best i've ever experienced.
My Stowa Seatime is one of my keepers: a true tool diver with lovely curves. Having 4 different bezels it is a joy switching looks. Would love to see you review a Prodiver, or maybe one of their modern fliegers (TO1, TO2).
    Regards from The Netherlands!

Your first pronounciation at 0:50 was fine ;)
its "Schto-wa" like Storz Walter, the founder of the brand.
So the "w" sounds like you pronounced it at 1:14
    i hope this helps
And the text on the leather strap means "real leather, handmade, skin friendly"

After owning my Stowa Flieger for over a year now, it's my most accurate mechanical watch. It gains 2 seconds per day. It's a well made watch that's only improved with daily wear. I'm a nurse supervisor at a very large veteran's facility and I walk 3 to 6 miles every night, so there are no concerns that I'm too sedentary for an automatic movement! If you're interested in the historical military aspect and value readability, I think it's worth the $1000 easily. The C3 Luminova dial is the brightest I own also. It's the perfect nursing watch for getting vital signs in a dark room at night. For me the Stowa Flieger has proved it's stuff.

Just picked up a Marine model a month or two back, can not recommend it enough. Dressy, yet utilitarian. working as a Passenger Conductor it is my go to dress watch for accuracy and clean appearance. Simple white dial with a date complication for added use, I highly recommend taking a look at the Marine collection. It is truly unique.

Great video and appropriate for Memorial Day. I did not realize 5-watch companies made the Germany Flieger. I purchased an homage awhile back and was thinking of the IWC. Nice review. I have just sold my IWC Mark XVI and having seen your review I cant imagine my IWC was any better. I have to say that when you spend so much on a watch your not paying for na necessarily better watch, you are paying for history and wrist bragging rights. So many of the recent watches, especially the Steinhart 500 titanium you reviewed are awesome pieces. I actually purchased the Steinhart based on your excellent review and was not let down. truly amazing, and on a decent strap unbeatable.

I just got the hand winding (ETA 2804) version. It's a lovely piece. The onion crown, case, dial, and lume are as TGV describes: minimalist, but very smart-looking, well-executed, stylish, and overall, the Flieger Classic 40mm grows on you very quickly. It's been on my wrist non-stop since it arrived. It is a bit pricier now in April of 2019, though; current price for the hand winding Flieger 40 is 899.16 Euros, or 1,010.75 USD. Still good value for money IMO if you're into mechanical watches and like the Flieger's aesthetic but don't really want to shell out 6-7k for an antique or wear a dinner plate-sized replica. The hand winding movement is pretty good, too. I'm noticing only about a +5 second per day variance. Not bad for a hand winding piece.

Ok. After seeing this, I am liking the A dial now, more than the B dial. I haven't bought a high end pilot's watch yet for good reason, I can't decide! I like the "counterweight" on the seconds hand on the Stowa, the blued hands, the case size and that their optional date windows are at 6:00 (more balanced to me). The nagging thing that makes me want to save more for an IWC is the fact that IWC's gear ratio for time setting is second to none. It's like the altimeter on a rocket. This is great for travelling. I also would miss a screw down crown with the Stowa, but for their quality, it's a reasonable price to pay.

I love Stowa, however I've done my homework and I'm going for the Laco, sandblasted gray, double AR coated 40mm, type A, no logo, upgraded movement and finish, open case back.
But, I'm getting one of the fliegers for my son and I, and I'm thinking that i but one of tech and let him pick.
For the big guys, definitely go with the 43mm, ladies or gentle men, the 36 is small, but if thy wrist is small, go for it you'll save some dolores! 😉

Great review TGV. I must admit, I didn't like flieger watches and simple complications either, until I started needing reading glasses :-) Enjoy your youth my friend!

If you're going to be reviewing more German watches in the near future try getting your hands on a Junghans Meister Pilot Chronoscope.

+The Urban Gentry you can get x-plane for Mac. It's 30 bucks for North America, and 60 for the world, but you also need a joystick which is 30 for the Logitech extreme 3D pro, which is the best joystick for under about $100

It may not have the history if a Stowa,, but I love the look of the Archimede Bronze Pilot (42H or 39H), blue hands, no logo and a stunning Ickler bronze case.

Stowa is basically a combination of the Lastname an Firstname of the founder: Storz, Walter. At the beginning of the video the pronunciation was nearly correct. The thing is in Germany we pronounce 'St' like 'sh'+'t' and the 'W' is really more a 'V'. And the Last thing is, the 'O' has to sound more german like. But if you aren't a native speaker german-pronunciation is hard.
    So basically it's: sh t o v a ; or with the phonetic alphabet: ʃ t o v a
hope this was a little helpful
    best regards from Germany ;)

Besides the flieger watches, I've extremely attracted to the Stowa Marine Classic line with arabic numerals. I've always liked watches, jewelry, and cars that are elegant but understated.

  • @calypso22

I got my Stowa Classic 40 a few years ago. It came with an ETA 2824-2 movement and cost about $700. Currentley it is being offered with a Selita movement for $1000.
Although I love this watch, as far as authenticity goes, the Luftwaffe case was a very plain slab-sided affair and not the more modern case and lugs used on the Stowa.
Laco (another original equipment provider) have decided to use a more historically accurate case shape.

Such a great company. Unfortunately, they only do direct sales (online or pick up), so you won't find them at you local dealer's. I visited their shop/factory/museum in Pforzheim/Germany a couple of weeks ago. Two employees spent almost two hours with me, showing me the whole collection, letting me try things on etc. Everything (production, customer service, sales, design, shipping) happens in that one little building. There is even a little museum with all their historic time pieces. As far as I know, they only produce 3000-4000 watches per year, but boy are they beautiful. I hand-picked my Flieger 40mm Klassik 90 years limited edition (with date, no logo) there and am expecting it to arrive these days. If I had to suggest a watch to look at in the future (on your channel), it'd be the ANTEA KLASSIK 39mm. It's the epitome of Bauhaus design and so well crafted. Really stunning in person, too. If you have a chance, definitely pay these folks a visit, friendly, customer-oriented, and (last but not least) great watches.

The only pilot style watch I have is the Omega Dynamic date. It's quite small, I think 38-39mm wide but it's quite legible. Great review as always! Also noticed the new TGV NATO at wrist candy watch club, looking good!

I like big and busy dials in pilot watches too, but there is something in that Flieger clarity. It looks just like an airplane navigation instrument. Like that altimeter you have on the clock. In fact, typ B dial is almost exatly like an altimetrer. It is not gold and sparkle and pretty butterflies, it is die Zeit. I also like the very official looking steel back with a table of technical properties more than a display back.

Every time I see your reviews I'm ready to pull the trigger. Did it on this one with limited edition version with "old"-style lume, ordered the 36mm #27/90, but now think of switching to 40mm as I have 7 inch wrist. Thanks for the review!

    Hi TGW .
since I am German and lived for over 10 years in the US , I know about the difficulty for English speaking people to pronounce the German language. The German w is pronounced like the English V , just a little bit softer. And the o you tend to pronounce with a u at the end like ou. But if you leave the u away you are dead right! :) like the o in
    Orange!
    Best regards
