It happens because the cloud dust are high in static charges and lightning is attracted to that and it hits the volcano because it's the closest thing to the charged particles and in needs to be grounded. It happens at a right place in a right time.
It's so amazing that it happens like that. I can only imagine how ancient peoples must have felt witnessing this erupting volcano also come alive with lightning all around it. No wonder they assigned divine causes to it, how else could you explain such an awe-inspiring sight?
That's quite wrong. Pyroclastic clouds generate their own lightning through massive friction, just like clouds do. In this case, the negative charges in the ash cloud connected to the positive charges in the clouds above, which made it branch upwards instead of usual downwards, that's a positive lightning, it's a lot louder and powerful, and lasts longer.
@@bettyleeist It's a volcano actually. Volcanoes have lava inside and they smoke ash clouds and erupt. Mountains are very big and they have a pointy thing on top and it has a lot of snow.

What this shows, is the density of the material in the cloud. It looks like a cloud but it is actually pulverized solid material. That cloud became the tallest stucture relaitve to the ground around it. This drew the lightning to it. What a fantastic piece of video. The person recording it should be very proud to have captured a once in a lifetime video.

I think it's lightning from volcanic activity, though there is a storm going on around it. The lightning bolt jolts up into the cumulonimbus (thundercloud) above it because of polarity differences.
If you play the video back in slow motion, it actually looks like the lightning came OUT of the volcano, which is 100% possible. There is scientific evidence that supports that lightning can, in fact, form inside a volcano's plume.
