- Film from the Rick Prelinger Archives. Wonderful Pan Am promo film from 1959 featuring fantastic scenes of B-707s. Also included are some lovely DC-8 scenes near the end. In 1966 when I was seven, my first plane ride was a Pan Am 707 from New York to Saint Croix. I had to wear a suit & tie!

Great documentary! Watching this was very poignant for me. You see, I just lost my dear father, who passed away suddenly last week at age 85. I'm 53, and remember all those summers (in the 60's & early 70's) he took our family to Greece (his home country) on Olympic Airways and TWA 707's. We often flew nonstop from NYC to Athens, and I remember the awesome flights as a kid. THANKS DAD... I LOVE YOU!

I was a Pan Am steward 1973-1976 and a Purser 1976-1984 . I flew the 707 many times. Passengers dressed and the 707 first class lounge was incomparable. When I started the B747/was only 3 years old. It was all just magical

These old films always make me smile. How different life was like back then. My last flight was next to a slob wearing dirty shorts and tank top, flip flops and a hat that said " Hoof Arted" on it. Sigh...

First of all...love the intense orchestral music soundtrack. I'm sure Frank Zappa was awestruck. Then comes the odd pronunciations of certain cities...like "yohannesburg" South Africa...and "eeeestanbul"Turkey... And the Rod Serling styled narration.

Everytime I see those old videos I can't stop thinking how unforgiven time is. That little girl all happy in the video must be in her late 60's today and most of the other people are probably long gone....

how true ! I always think the same and make the same calculations.Like in this case the film was made in the year I was born , so that girl is a few years elder to me .Wish she'd see this film and get back to us and share those moments . That'd be great.
I had a late friend (RIP) who was a pilot for Pan Am and he flew 707s, 747s and 727s. He said at that time back in the “glory days” during the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was a very glamorous and prestigious job where he was admired and respected and he had a lot of fun too! 🇺🇸
I flew Pan Am B707 or TWA many times to Europe and each time, memorable experience. Those were the days when flying was truly an enjoyable experience. Good food, pleasing service and comfortable seating. Thank you for reminding us how flying once was.

Great film. My family flew on a Pan Am 747 in the summer of 1970. I don't remember going through any type of security and my parents made us dress up for the trip just like these folks. Times have really changed.

I see that at least two 707 "Clippers" were used in the filming, two of which displayed their tail numbers.. N711PA had a long career. N709PA unfortunately crashed December 8, 1963 after experiencing a lightning strike while in the air that apparently ignited vapors in a fuel tank. The plane broke up and crashed near Elkton Maryland. Other nearby aircraft reported seeing it falling in flames. All 81 on board perished.

Back then people used to dress up all the time, especially when doing air travel.
I still dress up a bit and like to look nice when I do air travel.
+johnnieace45 It is always good to dress up a bit when traveling. Why? If you ever have a problem, then NOT being dressed like a bum is advantageous.
Also any potential of an upgrade is more likely if well dressed. I was once whisked into First Class (no charge) from coach when seated next to a loud child. Still waiting for that to happen again...LOL. It may...

I love the way people always dressed up back then for no reason. Men wearing suit and tie just because they were going out. Except the fedora... always hated those ugly hats. Just groom your hair and that alone is decoration enough.
When I worked for PanAm, women employees had to wear a dress or suit with heels, even if we were traveling on vacation. Men employees were asked to wear suits, ties and jackets. That was back in the early 1950's. It was a classy airline!
It's amazing to think that when the 707 started service airplanes had only been around for 55 years. That's an amazing speed of development. In the nearly 60 years since then, we still haven't managed to make jetliners any faster (given economic restraints). Just bigger.

Back when airlines actually gave a crap about passengers. This was the beginning of the golden age of air travel. The 1960s and 1970s were great. Things started going downhill in the 1980s.

+scdevon As a former British Airways and KLM and FInnair employee. Not only did the airlines start going downhill in the 80's.....the passengers started going downhill even quicker.
Because many things have changed since then. I haven't fly once yet in my life, but it could be because flying was back then an amazing experience, not just flying to get you from a to b. Or is it because people don't enjoy flights anymore cause of the 'bad' service (not getting respect by the crew, or the almost none legroom). Funny how you see in those 1940s/50s/60s/70s planes there was plenty of legroom, and now adays you hear all the time there isn't any.

I remember at the service stations you would pull up to the pumps and 2 men would check your oil,water, clean the windows and fill you up, then give you a prize for going there if it was couple of times .i also remember flying on planes when the airline would treat you like a king, no matter what seat you had. they served food that was as good as a restaurant, and did everything possible to make sure you were comfortable , boy have things changed!
It's so amazing how people dressed up in those days like going to a fine restaurant. That was classy! Now it's screaming babies, rude teenagers and adults who don't care except for themselves. Sad. Airlines have gone downhill and people even more so! Great channel by the way. Thank you for uploading all these videos. Nice to see how great the flying life used to be!

I remember when people dressed up just to go to the airport, a different world.
True , I dress fairly dang comfy for a plane ride. But, If I was Not herded around like cattle, expected to be treated like a person , not groped by security acting like prison guards, shoved into a dinky seat, shoulder to shoulder, I might be tempted to dress like was going some place nice.
Look how clean and new everything was...also there was no overhead storage fantastic...
Airlines haven't completely gone downhill. Look at Asia, especially Cathay Pacific, China Airlines and Asiana.

I've flown in the 707s in my childhood many times and I still think it's the most gorgeous aircraft. The magic started the moment you entered the cabin - the lighting and decor was stylish, the "airhostesses" were handpicked and lovely . Takeoff was smooth but you could feel the immense power of the four engines as they screamed at max , then the gentle tilt and we'd left the earth below us and we were airborne ! The early morning scenes and later as we had the advantage of a high perch looking down at the different types of clouds were breathtaking .With the jet you could go higher and faster and there was none of the collateral clatter or deafening drone of the turboprops . As said dining was a pleasure in such a spacious aircraft which flew so steadily and smoothly. Of it goes without saying that the passengers were dressed for the occassion and on their best behaviour - seen and not heard , unlike today .Great memories.

Wow, I remember being 10 years old, standing out on the observation deck at the airport, watching the planes, my hand in my Dad's, on a stinking hot Sydney day, absolutely rapt, sniffing the jet fuel...good memories....
Wonderful. I was a ticket agent for TWA in LAX in 1964, and loved those 707's. 95 in coach and about 10 in first class. noise, powerful, awesome. I flew PAA on a number of occasions and their service was excellent, as was TWA's. The good old Days! Nice

Having learned to fly as an Aviation Cadet in the USAF in 1955-6, this brings back wonderful memories. I flew for Pan Am from 1967 to the end, 4 Dec 1991. I remember that old truck of a B-707 well. It was a very forgiving aircraft as long as you stayed within the envelope (and even if you exceeded it on the high side - Pan Am had an upset at high altitude, and fell some 25,000 feet before regaining control, and it stayed together, even though it exceeded mach 1 in the dive). It was indeed a great airplane.
As a 25 year veteran of the industry, and 45 years growing up in it...I liked the early days much better.

What's I find interesting is how these old promo's show how people have changed. A lot of people forget that prior to the 70's few people traveled beyond their home state more than once or twice in their lives. When long distance travel was uncommon notice how the marketing focus was on service level not price.
Nice video. Even liked the ragtop Karman-Ghia, and the big Rolex wall clock. Nice touches of an era forever gone. Good to relive those days for a few minutes, when people dressed up for travel. Thanks for sharing.
Rolex is still regarded today as the epitome of Swiss watchmaking.
1974a JFK TO Tel Aviv on El Al, stopping shortly in Shannon. What a long, but beautiful flight! Loved that plane, and that airline. Even got a little booklet with breakfast "The History if the Bagel". Still the heyday of flight travel!

Really enjoyed the video my father was the second Officer on PAN AM, tail# N709PA,(shown in video) which was hit by lighting in November 1963, all the crew and passengers were killed.

Reminds me of my first air flight, 1966....17 yrs old on an Eastern 707 out of Philadelphia, bound for San Antonio....on the way to basic training......seems like yesterday
The first time I flew on a 707 was 1967. Before then I'd only flown on Turboprop Airliners or my Grandpa's little Cessna 180. Getting on a 707 felt like I really was in "Tomorrowland" at Disneyland. It really seemed that futuristic back then...

I was a 5 year-old when traveling from Idlewild to Sydney with stops in SFO, HNL, and NAN on a QANTAS 707, Oct. 1960. Still remember parts of that trip. Had the pleasure and have the memories of boarding dozens of 707s all over the world from 1960 through 1981, my last 707 on TAROM from Bucharest to JFK via Amsterdam. Thanks for this upload!
I remember as a child in the 70's when I flew on Panam it was very exclusive to fly on that airline back then.
I remember flying Pan Am 707s from San Francisco to New York in 1965. Wonderful experience, and wonderful memories.

Flying back then was very expensive and it was a big deal to get dressed up for. It was equivalent to paying first class prices today. Most people went their whole lifetime not stepping foot on airplane let alone outside of their town.
Pan Am gave gifts to kids on board, still have the cute rabbit I got In 1975 Cairo to Rome

Flight attendants looked so well put together back then. It used to be an aspirational job back then - people would look at them in awe. Nowadays all flight attendants look disheveled like they haven't slept in days and wear worn out uniforms. They're also super angry, I rarely get friendly service. Funny how time changes things.
I watch this video in sorrowful tears. After almost 20 years in aviation, seeing what that amazing profession has turned into makes me feel devastated.
Took my first flight in '64 on a 707 at the age of 14. Even then I kept my seat belt buckled.
The 707 early in this film, N709PA Clipper Tradewind, crashed on Dec. 8 1963 as Flight 214 en route from Baltimore to Philadelphia, killing all 81 on board.
It appears at 19:19, what a sad ending to that beautiful bird, flight 214 was hit by lightning which ignited fuel vapors in one of the engines and caused an explosion that blew off part of the left wing

Thanks for the look back at a wonderful era of travel. From the beautiful and kindly stewardess to the complete lack of sports wear of the passengers , to the walk across the ramp and climbing the airy stairs for what was a special part of the journey, the flight. Seats that leaned back and did not crush the passenger behind, food that was normal and a pride to serve for many airlines to the little extras that meant something to the travelers. I still have several sets of Pan Am and Lufthansa wings that I received from the airlines as a child. I don't remember exactly what decade brought about misery in air travel (deregulation coupled with price wars era I suppose, then 9/11 did the rest), I only know that it went from a wonderful part of the trip abroad to a necessary evil best accomplished with the mouth shut and eyes closed.
PanAm was my favorite airline as a kid. Service was excellent

Old time people knew who they are, and had their dreams. However, nowadays, we have nothing, no dream, no future, but controlled by something we never understand. Living but without hope!
De-regulation killed the glamour days of air travel like you see in the video although it enabled more people to afford to fly through competition- and the airlines WANTED that. The bad result is what we have today- flying cattle cars with people stuffed into their seats. Flying today mostly borders on terrible.
I feel as if I am not only watching a eulogy for Pan Am, but for my whole country. People looked so normal. Things just worked right. Yeah it was boring at times, but I could use some boring like that.

What a classy time! Especially Pan Am, as they were all about having class! Unfortunately, smoking was too considered classy and I really do not think the 39-yo Mechanic was a real smoker, pretty sure they asked him to do it for the film production, because it was considered manly and classy. Wow this is a time traveller, beautiful to go back in time and see how aviation was back then. I had the chance to fly eastern airlines in 1989 before it ceased operations,a great experience as a kid I'll never forget. Thanks for sharing this.

I just got off a jet an hour ago after flying half way across Canada. My legs have not woken up yet!! Not quite as glorious flying in a compressed sardine can as this video shows.

De-regulation killed off the novelty of flying and made it merely an aerial bus ride.
I remember watching flicks like these in elementary school a few years after this one!
The engines that powered the 707s and DC-8s in this film were Pratt & Whitney JT3C-6 turbojets. 13,500 pounds of thrust for each engine equals 54,000 total. After this film was made Pan Am would upgrade to the P&W JT3D-3 high-bypass turbofans, with a total of 72,000 pounds of thrust, or 18,000 each.

I love this plane, my first flight from Germany to US with my parents in 1968.
This exact aircraft crash 4 years after this movie, went down after getting struck by lightning, it was flying from Puerto rico to Pennsylvania, all 81 on board died

If the service was still like this, then perhaps people wouldn't act like animals on a airplane. Air travel today is little better than a Greyhound Bus.

Back in the days when flying was fun! People got dressed up, no spoiled or yelling kids, plenty of mechanics to check, re-check and check again, great food with style. Now it's different ballgame unfortunately. All albout profits and the shareholders.
