In my opinion, Tom Cruise should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Michael Caine was decent, but Cruise's turn was much more memorable.
I agree. Although I love Caine and agree he deserved the Oscar on any other year, Tom was robbed. Say what you want about him but his breakdown at the end is still the finest acting I've seen.

An Oscar for playing himself? Easily pleased. What about accents and changing mannerisms? He's always watchable, like Tom Hanks, but they're not talented, like an Oldman or Day-Lewis. Cruise is only as good as his script.

This movie is hypnotizing, I never notice the long runtime whenever rewatching it.
Seen it 7 or 8 times and never once turned it off before the end credits

I noticed when I saw it at the theatre; having finished a large popcorn and soda combo, I empathized with the boy genius who had to pee. I made it to the credits and scrambled to get to the men's room in time.
This is the most important and impactful film I've seen still to this day.

@@miamijules2149 Part of it was the time and setting I saw it in, but mostly my father and I were overwhelmed enormously by it. Today, I believe it's the best representation of what life actually is, as supposed to what we think it is.
I feel the same about this movie. It resonated with something in me so much that it almost felt like some sort of religious experience. I don't know why, but when I walked out of the theater that night I was a different person than the one that had walked in 3 hours earlier. I don't want to overanalyze this, I just treasure that moment, which no other movie has ever given me.

Tom cruise finest performance
Julianna Moore in the pharmacy, I can't help but cry when she says "I have sickness all around me". Caring for a dying family member changes you forever. That scene is gold.
That's the finest acting in a movie of fine actors.

Its a masterpiece
Magnolia is one if my favourite movies, it's just that amazing. Damn shame that Tom didn't win an Oscar for this one.
I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago. I felt anxious almost the entire time. The way it just keeps switching to different protagonists without any scenes for the characters to slow down or for the viewer to process what has happened previously creates an overwhelming sense of impending calamity. Brilliant film I absolutely loved it.
It's very dull 2nd watch though.
Magnolia is a pure Masterpiece. Production, directing, and acting all at the top of their game.
Great film. It has my personal favorite song ever, not just when it comes to film songs, "Save Me". Its lyrics are so meaningful to me.
yeah the aimee mann songs are so good..."one" is also quite poignant ( tho written by harry nilsson of course )
The cast was Great including John C Reily but Tom Cruise was Exceptional😎👍

Interesting story about a classic
I watched this on VHS, having never heard of it. When Tom Cruise says "Phil, I will drop kick the fucking dogs if they come near me" I had to pause the movie for a good 10 minutes to compose myself. My girlfriend was not so amused 😂.
I thought that emphasised what a total asshole his character is.

A masterpiece. But I never felt William H. Macy's character worked within the framework of the story. PTA could have cut twenty minutes and not lose anything. But alas, I'm just a mere mortal.
It took me 7 viewings to finish Interstellar but only one viewing to finish Magnolia and surprisingly 2 viewings to finish Cloud Atlas
literally my favorite movie of all time! seen it whenever it plays on the big screen, seen it at Egyptian Theater and Quentin Tarantino's New Beverly Cinema..... fun fact: as a child, my family and the neighborhood (city of Rosemead/corner of San Gabriel) was able to see them lay out frogs all out during filming, they closed off the city streets... they also filmed deleted scene at former diner called Bright Spot, you can see them filming in this diner on the special feature making of Magnolia with the alternate Stanley actor and Dixon.

This is still one of my favourite movies ever. Devastating beauty.
I absolutely love the opening pre-title section, a brilliant film within a film. The movie as a whole has a somewhat exhausting stance, but overall is an example of a filmmaker shooting for the stars, which should never be taken for granted, especially from a master like Anderson.
I really liked this movie.
Also it’s the only movie where I found Tom Cruise even tolerable. He’s actually playing a character that isn’t the same version of himself running a lot on those little stubby legs, with far too too many unnecessary close-ups of his fake face.
Loved this movie as a young teenager. Saw it a few times in the theater and had a movie poster lol
they just don't make them like they used to
I still will say Punch Drunk Love is his best or Inherent Vice. I still haven’t seen licorice pizza yet. But Tom Cruise was the standout performance. However my fav storyline was the Melora Walters/John C Reilly arch.

Way back in 2001 when I bought my PS2 at Best Buy this was the first DVD I ever bought with it. I think I paid $30 for the New Line Platinum series double disc that I still own today.
Nothing happened to it.
It was made. Its ambitious. It is good.

This movie showed me how different a movie can make you feel about movies..
I think it's a great film. I watched it first when I was 16 with my parents who had pretty decent taste in film. This was definitely one of my favorites. I was pretty weirded out by the frogs but I stayed for the melodrama of everyday life. Watching it as an adult, it really holds up. The pickup artist character played by cruise is oddly prescient. The manosphere became surprisingly huge and this does a great takedown of that culture.
Brilliant flick. Seen it multiple times and discover something new every time. Tom Cruises performance changed my opinion of him completely.
An ABSOLUTE cinematic masterpiece. I loved EVERY SECOND of this delicious feast. I bought it on DVD and cherish the memory of seeing such an unbelievably fantastic film in the theatre.
I REALLY REALLY miss Tom Cruise ACTING.
This was a movie I absolutely LOVED at the time. When the DVD came out, I rushed to buy it to see it again....
...But I couldn't bring myself to watch it again. It's so relentlessly dour that the idea of watching it is too daunting to me. I've forgotten much of the movie. I couldn't tell you why Macy's mouth is bloody in your clip.
It sure helped Aimee Mann's career for a while.

This movie is about the experience of LIFE and everything that it means.
I was doing student teaching in January of 2000 in an advanced high school English class. I told the host teacher that I loved this new movie called Magnolia. Later (possibly a week or two later), as I was sitting in on one of her advanced classes, the kids spontaneously told her not to see Magnolia because it was terrible. She got a funny look on her face, and said that someone told her it was good. She turned to me as if remembering (to this day I don't know if she was faking a memory lapse or not) and said, "Was it you?" lol So then I had to defend the movie to a bunch of know-it-all teenagers. They especially hated the sing along. I remember one kid saying, "That guy was half dead! No way he would be able to sing!" Then I had to explain that they were not literally singing, it was just a dramatic way to show that they were all connected--that this was all ONE story and not many. Well, they didn't care. They hated it. (It is a little odd to me that all the things I REALLY loved in the '90s have stood the test of time, while many at the time--if not all--were hated, despised, even mocked. Twin Peaks. Mulholland Drive. Magnolia. Even Boogie Nights was derided for being a movie about porno with Marky-Mark, lol. For years I thought I was just weird and liked terrible things. It only took 30 years for me to realize I was right the whole time. Remember that whole "dogma '95" movement? lol Damn. I thought things would be a lot different 30 years later. EDIT: I forgot to mention, the host teacher WENT TO MAGNOLIA after I said I loved it and the kids said they hated it, and she loved it also. Stupid teenagers. They don't know anything.)

You may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with you. Oddball movies like these just aren't made anymore. Harrowing movie. Came out of the theater in a daze, similar to coming out of Lost Highway or Being John Malkovich... "I mean, wtf just happened?" It's a question that should be asked more often after coming out of a movie.

Too bad about Burt Reynolds. It was by far, his best performance. Made him look like a flawed human, which he most definitely was. Maybe that was his problem with the film.
I just recently finally watched it mostly because i consider boogie nights to be one the best movies ever made. Yea its bizarre and i guess for some hard to follow but i really enjoyed it. I mean who the fuck makes a movies this bonkers now a days?? No one would have the balls. Thats why i like PTA he doesnt give a shit if you like it, he is just trying to tell a story.

I saw this in theaters, and it broke me like no other movie had before, or since. I was not at all prepared for the emotional impact that scene had on me - I tried to be strong, but 😢😢😢
Just another reminder that the Oscars has shunned Tom Cruise far worse than any other actor..

That's wild that the person Frank TJ Mackey was based on decided not to sue because the movie was so good.

Like many, I hailed Magnolia a "masterpiece" at the time, and was eager to see his next films. But, his subsequent films have been mostly dull or pointless, and when I rewatched Magnolia I realised it was dull and pointless too.
I hated this movie. I've never trusted my sisters taste in movies after she recommended it to me...
I once even told that to a buddy and he was so intrigued he wanted to see what was so bad, so I gave it another go..... we made it about 45 min in and turned it off.

I honestly don't get the praise for Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography. I have seen most of them and have found them to be the very definition of boring, yet everywhere I look they are hailed as masterpieces. Huh?
The only movie of his I liked is The Master, and only because of the 70mm cinematography.
