    Great Britain is a beautiful country that receives tens of millions of tourists every year. All of them go to see the Big Ben and the Tower of London, walk along Baker street, and, of course, see the famous guards. These motionless, silent figures in huge hats have long been one of the symbols of Great Britain, familiar to everyone. But what secrets hides this elite corps that protects the Queen? We'll figure it out.

      The idiot doing the commentary needs to bone up on his facts & history. The Coldstream Guards were founded in 1650 as Monck's Regiment of Foot and was part of Cromwell's New Model Army. It became known as the Coldstream Guards in 1670, upon the death of General Monck, its first Colonel. It is the oldest regiment in continuous existence in today's modern British Army.
      Also, it really grips my shit when I hear people refer to them as Royal Guards. They are The Queens Guards. And the Head-dress is known as a Bearskin Cap.
      As we used to say in the Army, "Attention to Detail" at all times.

  • @davidhunter553
    @davidhunter553 5 лет назад +773

    Sorry mate but I need to correct you here. First of all it's not just the Guards that guard. Most Regiments do Palace duty. I was in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and I done 6 months on Palace duty. In fact the RAF and as from (I believe) start-mid 2018, the Royal Navy started doing Palace Duty. Horse Guards Parade is often guarded by the Kings Troop Regiment Royal Artillery. As for the "long pointy toes marching" well its called the Slow March and every single soldier learns it from Basic training until you..well leave the service. The band of the Guards are not the only band that does all Palace music. The Band of The Royal Regiment of Artillery (based also in London) do a huge number of functions for the Royals and external Functions. As for "we can't talk to the public" well yes that is true, to a certain extent. If you get touched or being surrounded by tourists or (as you said) they stand in front of you. We WERE allowed to shout VERY VERY LOUDLY "Stand Clear of the Queens Guard" or "Make way for the Queens Guards" even though we are allowed to shout, obviously if a child wants to stand close or in front of us, No we wouldn't shout. And trust me SO SO many people try to make you laugh while your stood guarding and yes there are some that make you smile, even break a little laugh, but you don't want to be caught, especially by the DSM (Drill Sergeant Major) if he catches you. Then expect a good few hours getting marched at 200 paces a minute over the road in the Guards Regimental Parade ground for 2-3hours..... Not pleasant 😂😂😂. Anything else you wanna know, just ask (within reason, and National security)

    That's just winter dress mate
    Also, just anyone can join the guards, even women. SA80 isn't a machine gun. There are 5 foot guards regiments it's not just 1, the oldest foot guards regiment is (officially) the Grenadiers, and was not formed in the 12th century. The button spacings denote the regimental order of precedence. Officers are made from Female brown bear skin, dyed black. There are some synthetic bearskins, but they are shite, and the bear population is heavily regulated so as not to allow an extinction. The slow march does hurt a little, but only mongs can't manage it, it's not hard.

    Everyone in my army cadets made fun of "The grey ones can kill you"
    I'm gonna put corrections below:
    Pay in training: £15,671, rises to 20,000 with time. Officers get: £27,272 in training, that rises to £32, 780. In both instances, you get more and more pay the more you serve.
    Someone I know is going into the Colestream guards and he's only 16 and going to AFC Harrogate. What usually is considered best of the best in the Army is Paras, SAS, or anyone else in the British Army Commandos.
    While the guards occasionally have loaded guns, its generally the armed police who guard the Queen. The guards are ceremonial most times.
    The gun they use is an assault rifle, specifically an L85 A2 (some have got the new L85 A3). The gun is only loaded when there is a threat. I believe that the guard usually stays in bearskins and all at night, just different people operate and there's always guards in normal uniform back in the base. The Scots guards were first. Formed in 1642. Then Colestream in 1650. Then Grenadier in 1656. Then Irish from 1900 and finally Welsh in 1915. I'm also surprised that this isn't copystriked because nearly every clip is used from the Gaurding the Queen documentary.

    @neilhayes4166 5 лет назад

    3 of my Uncles served in the Grenadier Guards and they all guarded the Queen. None of them were invited to a reception. The famous bearskin, made from the pelts of black bears culled by Native Americans in Canada, were adopted after Waterloo in 1815. The 1st Foot Guards held back the French Imperial Guard as the French attacked the British army position, while our Prussian allies attacked the rear of the French army. When the famed Imperial Guard broke, the British troops stole their Bearskin’s and taunted them. The Guards believed they had defeated the Grenadiers of the Guard - in fact it was the Chasseurs of the Guard - but the name stuck and so did the historic bearskins. Prior to this the Guards wore traditional British army shakos. The red coat is a relic of Cromwell’s New Model Army. Cromwell wanted his men to be uniform, to look the same, and would have probably have chosen a less showy colour. But red dye was cheapest and in true MOD style the cheapest contractor won. Each regiment of Guards has a distinctive number and layout of buttons in order of seniority. The Grenadiers are the most senior regiment of the British Army followed by the Coldstream Guards. The latter regiment is so named as they crossed the River Tweed from Scotland to assist in the restoration of Charles II although they had been a Parliamentary regiment during the Civil War. You can guess how warm the Tweed is! There are also the Scots Guards, the Irish Guards and the Welsh Guards, as well as the two cavalry regiments, the Lifeguards and the Blues and Royals. Each regiment has its own band - not an orchestra - with exceptionally high musical standards. The grey greatcoat worm by all is simply a winter overcoat, not a mark of seniority. In the 1950’s my uncles said their guns were not loaded, but they weren’t too bothered. The bayonets are real, and the British army last used them in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Guards are all regular, serving soldiers and a part of the British Army that can and has been deployed on active service from the Peninsula to Iraq. Ceremonial duties play a part but not the main part of their careers. My uncles, all over 6ft, all straight backed despite being in their 70’s, still speak proudly of guarding the Queen, and without hesitation they would have given their lives to protect her. I think they still would, to be honest.
