With the newer pioneer units you dont need that adaptor from axxis, just solder the wires directly to the sw1 (and sw2 if connected in car wiring) and steering wheel ground wire to the headunit steering wheel connector and you are good top go. just select the steering wheel control option in system menu of pioneer and select your car. pioneer supports major japanese cars by default (where the sw connectors are not canbus dependant)
Oh no! I was totally tracking and got everything wired and ready to go until I took out my stock stereo and discovered completely different harnesses. Now I’m not sure where to connect the stereo wheel control module because the wire colors are different, I have *two* violet and white wires in one of the harnesses. What’s going on here? There are four harnesses in my 2010 tacoma, where this video only shows three. Two plug into my harnesses, one is black and has 11 wires running straight into the factory loom. The fourth one is white which is my best guess for the steering wheel control but as I mentioned above, it has 9 wires, not 3, and two of them are violet and white. I checked out the upgraded video but this one is best because I’m using the exact same pioneer single din stereo
I am getting ready to install the new stereo for my 2010 toyota taco I was wondering if I could see a picture of the wiring for the stereo , harness, and steering wheel adaptor lay out.
Thanks for the video. On the kit I ordered from Cruthfield there is no place to plug in the black plug that comes from the old radio on my 2010 Tacoma. This plug is not needed with the new one I installed.
Hey man. I have a Pioneer in my 05 Tacoma and I cant connect the controls for some reason. Mode and preset up only work and I can't figure it out. I've tried everything. I have also even update my Axxess
Just purchased a 2014 tacoma and pulled the kenwood that was in the dash out and was horrified to find all the factory harnesses were deleted and no longer present. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the Metra Harness 71-1761 ? So I can undo some of this mess.
Thanks you, my headache is over. Mine would not work no matter what I did. Didn't know the factory red and white stripe wire should be grounded not only to the black wire on the SWC but also to the black ground wire on the radio harness
Hi! Your video is super helpful, thanks for sharing I have two questions. The links you shared for the metra harness and the ASWC-1 module both have several options and I want to be sure I pick the right one: -Do I need the TAO-2B wiring harness with the metra harness? or just the metra harness? -The options included in your link to the ASWC-1 Module are: "Control Interface+ Car Antenna Adaptor", "Control Interface + Dash Kit", "With Micro B Connector", and "With Micro B Connecter + Wire Harness". How do I know which one to select? Thanks!
I just got done follow wing everything step by step. Powered on and everything works still except the steering wheel controls. The axxes lights don’t turn on but I have it all connected the exact way you do. Please help. Edit: okay I did figure it out and I had it working with the stereo not all the way in but once I put the stereo all the way in it stopped working again. Not sure why. I took it back out and looked at all connections and they all look good. So now I am lost
The factory steering wheel controls also require the need to be grounded in addition to the ASWC-1 and the radio. Just ground them all at the same location. The reason why this wasn't done when we wired up the harness to begin with, was because we had to get into the radio wiring after we pulled the factory radio out.
+Provo Beast Audio Installation I got it. But it would have been helpful to know in advance, in the tutorial, as I shortened my ground and didn't have extra.
This kit was specifically made only for a single din, but go to Sonic Electronix and they will have a fit guide to parts needed for a double din. Use coupon code ProvoBeast for a 5% discount.
i got the same radio and the harness that came with it doesnt have a red wire. Its only got yellow, black, orange, and the remote control blue/white wire. Do i just leave the red wire on the dash kit harness alone?
+Eric Geiger the red wire is your ignition wire, if it is missing, that is a major issue, because without that red wire, your new radio will not know when to turn on. The purpose of the red wire is when the key is turned on, it sends a 12v switched current to the radio telling the radio to also turn on. Sounds like you will need a new harness.
If you ready the description, i have included all the model years this install is applicable for, along with the parts listed there as well.. The dash cavity is identical from years 2005-2015.
not with this, theres a harness with rca plugs that allows you to have both, for my scion its the Metra 70-8114... look up the one that works for your car
My 2005 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner does not have the factory steering wheel controls as pictured in your video. I removed my factory air bag (designed for no stereo controls) and added a new air bag designed for stereo controls. All I should have to do now is purchase the two steering wheel control switches and wire them up to my new Kenwood after market stereo, with the wire harness adapter, as in your video. Am I missing anything? Thanks, awesome video. Your dash is exactly like mine, and the steering wheel controls should be the same once I add the stereo control switches to my new air bag!!
Parts linked in the description of the video!

Easily the best vid I have seen for help with this! Thank you so much for you time and explanation of how to on the radio!!!
What all do I need to buy, other than everything that comes in the pioneer box?
See the description.

Sounds like a short. Redo your connections using proper connectors (crimp caps / butt connectors) if you don't know how to solder.
Bought a used head unit has this steering wheel control pretty I need to take it off seeing how I have no steering controls
Thank you very much awesome!!!
With the Metra dash kit, does the stereo sit flush or is there a lip in front of stereo at the bottom?
Where did that extra ground come from for the stereo control? WTF
The factory steering wheel controls also require the need to be grounded in addition to the ASWC-1 and the radio. Just ground them all at the same location. was the metra kit only for a single din or double din?

If you don’t have the steering wheel control, you don’t need the axxess aswc-1 right?
Yep, you got it!
Is this a JBL set up
No JBL on this truck
I have a tacoma 2010 but it does'nt have a jbl system, but it has a swc system would it fit?
Yep, it should work fine.
How much was all the stuff put together
I live in honduras and want to know where can i get one of those kit for my 06 toyota tacoma, i'm still playing cd... Thanks for help!
Ebay
Ahh... You make look so easy! (: Good Job!

Frustrating. Seems like Pioneer dropped the ball on that. I would return the unit to get it replaced or order a new harness.
Does the 2015 head unit assembly work the same as the 2013 and 2006? Cant find hardly anything online on the 2015 and if its any different
If you ready the description, i have included all the model years this install is applicable for, along with the parts listed there as well.. The dash cavity is identical from years 2005-2015.
I read the description, verifying everything you read on the internet is a good idea. Thanks for the info
Does your car comes with the JBL factory system
This vehicle did not.
If I don't want the steering wheel controls do I still need the wiring harness adapter?
If you don't want to retain the steering wheel controls, you will not need the ASWC-1 module.
Will you retain the Aux input functionality??
not with this, theres a harness with rca plugs that allows you to have both, for my scion its the Metra 70-8114... look up the one that works for your car
Does it shake during speed bumps, bumpy roads, high speeds?
Nope, solid as the factory.
I want to watch you do this, not listen to you talk it through. Did this connect to phone?
Who peed in your cheerios?
Where can i buy that dash kit that everything goes into
Sonic Electronix. Also use coupon code ProvoBeast to save 5% off at checkout.
