I made a Dry Bag from an old Banner (easy recycling project)

- My 4 week Scandinavia Vacation is coming to an end and here is the last, simplest and probably most underestimated project I made for this trip. A dry bag that I made from an old banner. I don't have a lot of sewing experience but still this was simple to make in a day. Its super useful to have a bag that is not super valuable and that can be used for collecting firewood, storing laundry or that keeps your towels dry on a paddle trip. enjoy the video!

I just love Laura's precision. Out of all the makers on youtube I think she probably has the neatest and most organized workspace and workflow. Always a pleasure to behold.
Her and April Wilkerson for sure. That being said the mess savage and diresta have is a pretty fun aesthetic
Check out Get Hands Dirty for precision. Great channel.
Wow that’s one hardcore sewing machine. Definitely not playing around with that industrial beast.
Laura, On a recent project I used HH-66 vinyl cement. It creates a permanent, waterproof seal. Might look into it. It would let you make a bag that will never leak as with sewed seams. Let glue dry. :)
Barge glue (in the US) or contact cement with a strip of vinyl would also work; just make your own seam tapes with the same material and glue them over the sewn seams.
Thank you! I spent the whole video wondering how the sewing holes/seams were going to be dealt with then was confused when they weren't! This is the info I wanted! Appreciate it!
@@photomattmills As with the reply above, this is the info I was curious about and looking for! Thank you!
Those Silky saws.. they're so good they're addicting.
I've used old rain coats I've picked up at Goodwill/ used clothing store to make all different sizes. Colors makes it easy to remember what is in ea bag. I've also made rain bags for my dogs packs which works wonderful for my Rottweiler who can't pass a water source without going in no matter the season.
Laura, I'm surprised u haven't made a jig/ arm for ur sewing machine to sit on top so u can run the material under. It makes sewing circles/ round a breeze u don't have to fight all the material on top
That is so freaking AWESOME!!!!
Creative, as always, Laura! My favorite part of every one of your videos is your smile when you see the form coming together.
When I'm having a bad day your videos always put me in a good mood. ⛅🌤️☀️
I'm always envious of your tool collection but that sewing machine is making me extreamly jealous. That is a fabulous industrial beast.
Could be yours for a cook $1k - Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1
I love the beautiful simplicity of bags like these. Just a tube with an opening you can roll up, and yet so practical.
Yup. Vinyl and nylon strap instead of sailcloth and hemp rope, but this would be instantly recognizable to any 18th century sailor... If it works perfectly, why change it?
@@wingsofwrath4647 and that was probably made from recycled shipboard materials too. An old knackered sail would probably yield plenty of offcuts even after being chopped up to make a frankensail
@@TheErador Oh, absolutely! Sailors were masters at recycling and they also made entire "liberty suits" out of sailcloth and very lavishly embroidered, with colored ribbons along the hems, etc. which they wore on shore leave.
I recently bought a kayak and all the accessories one can get for paddle sports are REALLY expensive. This is a pretty amazing quick little project that makes a difference in the environment and you get exactly the size of bag you need. Always love your videos!
Really neat idea. I need to make a waterproof bag for diving. Your video gives me more of a path now.
One of the things I love most about your videos is watching your face when you see something is working, when the image in your head is becoming reality. In those moments, you're just as excited and happy as we are watching these videos.
Ich liebe deine Kreativität. Hoffentlich machst Dû wieder öfter kreative Sachen😍😍
Cooler Rucksack! Komm ma ins Wassersportparadies Kliemannsland! Dann testen wir, ob der dicht ist.😉
Very satisfyingly relaxing video, thank you.
Das Material is ja mal richtig gut :D Wetterfest, wasserdicht, stabiel, gut verarbeitbar (wie es scheint) echt cool :)
When you popped that bag up and smiled it made me smile seeing your happiness.
Seeing the peal of those letters was so satisfying!
Love it! (and the holiday clips)
Spalted firewood - fancy!
Nice bag too. It turned out really well.
Every time I tune in I am amazed. You can make anything from anything...reduce, reuse, recycle. You certainly take that to another level. Such a multitalented person you are, I am so awestruck. I am just such a fan of Laura Kampf. Looked like a very nice vacation - do you actually relax? I hope so. Peace & love to you & yours!
Hello Laura beautifully done good job
Amazing, I love that she find things and recycle them
Thats a very useful bag you made.
Awesome, This reminds me of bags I have seen repurposed from old Truck trailer side curtains, messenger and similar style bags.
Just love how you excited you get with your creations! Always enjoy watching your videos!
The coolest maker on the planet !
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED this video. especially the last shot.... a couple with their dog on the beach!!! I wanted to be there with my 12 year old Lab and my wife! Great build. Loving the nature videos lately.
Great video! Thanks for sharing
What a cool idea !
It's so relaxing to see you work Laura !
Such a lovely bag! I don't know if I saw correctly, but I would probably reinforce the upper seam of the strap. That point gets a lot of stress
Simple and practical. A good project doesn't have to be complex ... quite the opposite. Well done, good Laura.👏👏❤️
Great idea and a nice and functional bag. Personally I think I'd leave the vinyl lettering on the fabric. To give a recycled aesthetic to the bag. Very interesting project.
I'd love to see how you flat-packed that cast iron pot into your bag or the secret storage in your paddle board.
Like the industrial sewing machine.
Have a 1910 vintage Singer Industrial machine in my basement which my Grandfather used until the 1960’s…
Is there NOTHING you can't create? Every video I'm so Impressed, How about an apple pie? Just kidding!!! I Love your Content, great editing, I wish I had a shop like yours
A great project, simple to make, great useful product. But so very well filmed. Super, Laura.
That looks like a very no-nonsense sewing machine! Great project!
Yeah, the Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 looks like a beast!
Nice couple, cheers!
Now I gotta do this.
Nice and useful indeed.
Very cool project! Thanks for sharing the build and the beautiful footage from your holiday. Cheers! 🍻👍🏻😊
One of your most poetic and beautiful videos.
You're one of the very few where I notice a new video...I run to the site and give it a thumbs up...and watch it later. When you put out something I just know its going to be good. Be safe-Be well
Thank you!!!
Heh, I just finished making a dry bag out of some vinyl coated fabric a week or so ago. I don't have access to a sewing machine (or the skills to use it), but vinyl cement worked great for my no-stitch seams.
Really like the strap cinch idea here to hold the roll top closed. Looks like much easier one hand operation than a typical dry bag
Yeah, your stuff is very cool. Subed and will refer others to your channel. Great job.
Brilliant!
Love the way you repurpose stuff it’s brilliant. You can see something useful in everything. Like making a coffee grinder out of a windscreen wiper motor. Which is just crazy and amazing.
I love that you made the bag with no glue or other methods - just clever sewing and tension! And what excellent material to boot, good find!
Schönes Projekt
You are really a recycling genius, once more very impressive. Did you try if it is watertight? I am surprised that you sew the parts together, I would have considered glueing (PVC-Glue)?!
BR, Sven.
PS: Teresa (Tete) hat mir total begeistert von eurem Treffen auf dem Kölner CSD berichtet und voller Stolz das Selfie gezeigt, ein toller Moment...danke dir.
Here I am thinking, again, about Bike Touring and wham!! (Not the band) Next step, Laura's saddlebags.
Thanks a lot, amazing video.
Me gusta la sonrisa de satisfacción que pone por el trabajo bien hecho. Ánimo crack!
Love these Sunday premiers. Hope your vacation was fantastic!
I love this!
You look like you're having a great time on holiday. A good reward for all the hard work you put in making videos to entertain and inspire us.
Love it!!!!
Brilliant 🤩
Another great video (& I love SUP). Cheers Laura and thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday! :)
Thank you for showing so much if your holiday.
Its been really lovely to see every other day. 😊
This is a good looking bag, Laura. There are not many makers who seriously recycle like you do. Thanks for the video.
So cool.
Well done.
Oh man, love this project but...Laura, that log was beautifully spalted wood. Any wood turner would go ape for that.
Awesome!
Wow Laura you have certainly blown my mind with your really useful ideas 💡 and to recycle an old banner and turn it into something of everyday use and now I do not know what else to say, except well done 👍 and keep these wonderful ideas 💡 and things coming and until next time TaRa for a bit.
Good one 👍
Great simple project, and it looks like it definitely made your vacation better!
Yeah Sunday joy is back
I'm impressed, as always 🤍
Hey there "super camper"!!!
Nice bag 👍
Allow me to say that is ONLY One thing missing there... You should go fishing once in a while for your meals 🤔... during your tour at least😜
Fishing is not boring, it's super...
You should try...
Stay cool
see yaaaa
That is the answer for my taking things with me in my canoe
Sehr Schön!!
This is a fantastic idea!
Hey Laura, sorry I missed the premiere this morning, I lost track of time while dumpster diving lol!!! Crafty way to reuse stuff you already had!!
You are the best, Laura! Keep up the awesome work
Awesome idea great work.
Sewing those bottom circles are soooo hard! I do this for some bike bags I make. You make it look easy! Great bag
I have to agree that I was a little surprised to see a round bottom bag made of such material qualified as an easy project but I guess I really depends on the type of Machin you own.
Hers seems to have the fabric pulled from over with the walking foot and simultaneously from underneath which makes it less Tricky.
I used to do 8 sided bases on a lot off bag before I managed to have the right skills and tool to perform round one.
It look nice and can bring a touch of modernity on some bags
VERY well done, and great storytelling as always.
Next time, you might want to consider doing all the straps (and the velcro closure) when the panel is •flat•, then sew the cylinder seam and lastly sew the bottom in. Sewing things onto the panels of a stiff bag as the last process is a bit of a stuggle (as I'm sure you found out).
Looking forward to your next video!
I’m beginning to believe you can do everything
Excellent recycling project. What a beautiful place to try it out. Love the Leatherman fire starter! Thank you for sharing so much of your vacation with us - it was lovely! Happy Pride, my friend!
I wish I had thought of this before purchasing a dry bag! Great job Laura
Wow, so awesome and useful to see. Wonderful video to make the response between nature, making, recycling, respect and such a beautiful vacation trip clearly visible! I love this video from the bottom to the top! ❤️👍
Great project, and very good looking and useful dry bag. I would have spent ages on a closing feature, but your roll then cinch solution was Occam's razor. Can't wait for your next project, as you reintegrate into your work schedule
Hi Laura, great re-use - those dry bags cost a fortune. I've seen a roll/fold over design on the top fastened with a buckle/clip that might be better & cheaper than velcro. Love the channel.
Super awesome project! Makes me want to sew something
Really cool, always love your ideas and the way you reuse stuff.
at 2.41 it helps to make some small release cuts, this will make it easier to sew a corner like this.
Ah cool! Thanks for the tip!

Such a solid build. I'm gonna have to make a road case for my sewing machine now.
Love the intense look you have at 4:36 :)
That spalted wood could have been vacuum-soaked with resin then turned into something nice (knife handles, a cup, coasters). You might want to try it some time.
For this project, I'd have used an adhesive sold by Bison called liquid rubber. I used it to glue some pond liner to make a portable outdoor shower, and it's insanely strong. Oddly enough, it doesn't delaminate even from the smooth and rubbery surface of the pond liner. My feeling is it creates stronger bonds than sewing on materials that have no or minimal texture, that are prone to ripping or tearing. And the seals it creates are 100% watertight.
Wherever you are can I go and live there!?!? It looks so peaceful, beautiful and oasis like ☺️.
Next project .. DIY personal floatation device?
I love the bag. I keep thinking about making a bag like that out of the tarp-like dry cat food bag material we keep throwing away. Reuse instead!
Well deserved vacation Laura! Cool stitching machine too, does it do leather? Cool to see some future leather projects! :)
Looks like someone was inspired by Adam Savages recycled sail bags.
😉👍❤
