  • My favorite married couple in music history Billy Davis Jr. and Marilyn McCoo who were in the 5th Dimension together in the 60s recorded this funny Laura Nyro song about the female singer (McCoo) asking a guy named Bill to marry her. Wedding Bell Blues! Life imitated art, as after they recorded it, Billy and Marilyn got married and then the song became a #1 hit. A great story that will bring a smile to your face!

Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush on Don't Give Up.
Nik Kershaw and Kim Wilde Let It be ( Ferry Aid ensemble 1987). They never released a record together but have done an acoustic version of The Riddle and Kids In America for Australian television that is excellent. Always surprised they never created a monster hit by collaborating as their voices blend so well.

My parents had a 5th Dimension 8-Track and it would play in my Dad's pickup. Just love them. And watched Marilyn on Solid Gold. I would love them to tell the story behind You Don't Have to Be a Star; my late Mom loved that song and had the 45. Laura Nyro didn't get the credit she truly deserved; her songs brought so much joy to many of us. Marilyn and Billy are still together and still singing, one of rock and pop's greatest couples.

When you are very young, as I was when the 5th Dimension was making their hits and living on our radios, you develop a kind of worship for the entertainers (some call it fandom) and it is very heartfelt for someone at the age of 10 to experience.
Of course we all know of times where we ended up being disappointed in our heroes, bit not with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., they have always been two people worthy of the admiration and love they not only received but have created over the years.
I'm so glad to see them here being happy and honored for a lifetime of love and music.

Although Dionne Warwick co-hosted the series pilot with Glen Campbell and was the first season host in 1980 through 1981, approved "Solid Gold" Musical Director Michael Miller as its musical director and gave approval for his composition of its iconic theme song and hosted season 6 during 1985 and 1986 and was great in her own right, it was Marilyn McCoo who had the longest time as co-host or host on "Solid Gold", having done that for 5 out of its 8 years on the air. Billy actually knew my dad since my dad used to work for KATZ Radio as a news director, so my older brother and I got introduced to them. I remember shaking Billy's hand and Ms. McCoo kissing my cheek and telling me I was a good boy. Then she gave both of my parents a hug and kiss on the cheek as well and they left. My dad laughed later that they had paid our bill as they left. So he doubled the tip for our server. This was in I think 1975 or 76.

If you want something that will last then don't seek temporary pleasure. And if all you want is that temporary gratification, you won't ever get something that will last. It's like learning to play an instrument. It takes a lot more than a single note. It takes patience and dedication and a pure love and enjoyment of the music. If all you want is fame and fortune or temporary pleasure then forget ever having something that will last.

I love The Fifth Dimension! This is one of my Mom's very favorites of the 60s. I watched your first video with Billy & Marilyn. So glad you did another! I love them and so thankful for their music! You just don't hear great music like theirs anymore. It's sad too, and nobody really knows who they are or haven't heard of them. They're forgotten. And, now that vinyl is big, record companies are re-releasing their old catalogs of albums. But, not The Fifth Dimension! Makes me so mad! Your fans like me , love you, always will! We will never forget you!

Love those harmonies and haunting melodies of the 5th Dimension. Wedding Bell Blues always makes me smile, because it reminds me of my tone deaf mother singing along with it loudly, serenading my eventual stepdad, Bill. She listened to one of those 'music of your life' just short of elevator music channels. They were married 20 years before she passed away, but it took them 10 years to make it to the altar - so mom sang that A LOT!
How a tone deaf woman gave birth to so many musicians, I do not know. Only younger sister inherited the tin ear.

My folks had the 5th Dimension's Greatest Hits album, so those songs are a part of my earliest memories. On that album, there was a track that was segued in with Wedding Bell Blues, called _The Worst That Could Happen._ It tells the story of a man watching the woman he loves marry someone else. The two songs fit perfectly together. Also, _Stone Soul Picnic_ was one I remember liking a lot back then, and still do.

To answer your question, at the moment, no one else is coming to mind… mainly because the 5th Dimension was such a major part of my music world. At one point, I stayed with father for a couple of weeks in the early 70’s, and he always had great taste in music. Which meant he had the 5th Dimension LP! So while I stayed at his place while he worked, I dug into his albums and had mini-concerts! There was something about that album that I really loved…. The arrangements, the subjects, and those voices! It was, to me, perfection! I still have visual remembrances of listening and being transported into the musical performance! Just spectacular and heart- warming!!!
