    Love this video. I grew up in Etna. It was very nostalgic to see it again. Coming from the Northside on Rt. 8 as a child with my father, we would look over to see the tracks for a train. If there was a train he would speed up to try to beat it to, turn on to Butler street. I like trains too, but living in Etna, this train was often your nemesis. Your favorite show would come on tv, then the whistle. Walking over to the K mart then having to wait for the train with bags in your hands. So at the beginning of the video I seen that Jeep and I was rooting for it. As it passed before the gates went down I exclaimed much like you do when the Pens score a goal. Thanks Wallie, this was a great memory to revisit.

      I’ve only had the luxury of arguing the train once. We were responding to a call on 28, and we turn around in Etna to go north, we see their lights coming from the city, get to the crossing just as the lights start on the masts. Etna’s engine, I recall, was stuck. Second time a back of a house on the tracks caught fire, they pulled a line across the tracks, after calling AVR, they requested trains to be stopped. Per AVR dispatch, no trains that day. Not 45 second later, here trundles a set of engines running light. Etna’s finest flagged them down. It’s a good thing the AVR never hurries.

    Not far from where I live, Royal Oak, MI has a railroad that cuts through downtown. Every summer I go to the Arts, Beats & Eats Festival down there, and it's a surreal sight to see a freight train cutting between the buildings while watching an outdoor rock concert!

    I live like 2 blocks from a CSX terminal in a very manufacturing heavy area. I think my house ruined trains for me lol. Because I hear this every night at 1 AM like it's in my bedroom with me.

    My great-great-grandfather was a Pennsylvania Railroad employee from 1880 to 1893. Railroading has been in my blood FOREVER. I've been to Altoona, Marion, Fostoria, and Bellevue - all great places to watch trains. Next year, I'll be visiting Deshler, Ohio, for my 32nd birthday. Maybe I'll return to Altoona in 2019 or 2020.

      I love Altoona. I have been to Horseshoe Curve so many times I have lost count. I would love to learn about your great-great-grandfather's job as an employee that long ago. To think he helped power up steam locomotives is something else.

      WallieB26 I was told that he worked on the mail trains between Pittsburgh and the Ashtabula/Conneaut area. Whether that means he operated the steam locomotives or worked in the mail cars, I have no clue, because all that info has been lost to history - he died in 1942.

      Kevin Baker that's still a really nice piece of history though. My parents had a campground at Holiday Camplands in Ashtabula, OH. I go to Conneaut Lake, Pa all the time. So, I know how nice of a trip that had to be. Thanks for sharing your story!

    I got hired to work on wheeling and Lake Erie back in like 97, but I quit right after the orientation meeting LOL because the work load was so demanding. You were on call 24 seven, from the time you ended your shift the time you begin your next shift. They said it was near impossible to even make it through a movie without getting called in, And even to go to a movie you were choosing that over sleep.

    This is an awesome video. The abandoned stores and malls... great but some times can be slightly depressing. Great videos but I think of workers laid off, stores gone.
    Trains bring me back to my Lionel train set as a boy and I imagined the train layout as it's own city with me as mayor. Hopefully you had a train set as a boy WallieB26.
    Keep those unique videos coming. Watched the Christmas one in your hometown three times1

    Hi Wallie, I come from a long family of railroad people. Dad worked in the yards for 46 years before retiring, started work at 13. I live in Manitoba, Canada and we have a subdivision called Transcona which is were I grew up. My grandfather used to steer the coal locomotives back during the depression when he could find work, my grandmother kept his log book. Dad would be called out to fix trains that had derailed.We have two Canadian Railroads: Canadian National Railroad (CNR) which my dad worked for) and the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) I guess the purpose of this message is to tell you that down when we were small children we had a cottage downat the lake in the rock huts and every Friday and Saturday night at about 10 p.m. (and the fire flies were out then too) dad would take us down to the abandoned railway station to watch the Super Panorama or Continental (CNR Passenger trains) come through the rock hut tunnels big light shining. Those memories are etched in my memory forever. Long live the train. Love your videos!

    Love this video, reminds me of when I was a kid, my dad used to take me to work with him sometimes located in a very heavy industrial area, used to always just sit in the car and just watch these trains. Years later I would end up working and living onsite as a storage facility manager in the area by the same tracks. Kind of an adjustment now living in a rural area, and all the quiet. Pretty awesome!

    Awesome video! Around what times do AVR trains normally go through Etna? I’ll be in the area for a few days.

    • @WallieB26
      @WallieB26  4 года назад

      They go by at any given time of the day but I know a common time is between 8-10PM. I've seen a few go by around 9 within that time frame. And it's usually daily.

      @@galaxyrailfanning7860 no problem! Hope you're able to catch one! Their line travels up Route 8 for a few miles so if you cant catch it in Etna, you may be able to up the road a bit. I usually always catch them travelling North.

    Never understood how AVR can make a butler turn take all afternoon. Never in a hurry is there motto, fastest i've seen them go is maybe 15 or 20 miles per hour.

    • @jerrywilson3896
      @jerrywilson3896 5 лет назад

      Probably because track speed in 10 mph

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 4 года назад

      JDub 1970 apparently they’ve upped it, AVR posted signs at the crossings that speeds were to be raised (hah, that’ll happen) about a week ago, here comes the AVR, in absolutely no semblance of a hurry. And hold the phone, I thought if the tracks were rated for 10mph, passenger trains were prohibited, and if I’m not mistaken, the Capitol Limited took the AVR on a detour once or twice (if I recall correctly, it was when the oil train fell into the Beaver River on the Fort Wayne)

    • @pdumpsterful
      @pdumpsterful 2 года назад

      The original speed was 25 from Glenwood to bakerstown then it went to 40. Going through etna at bridge street the speed was limited to 10mph until the engines crossed the crossing because too many cars were getting hit because people would stop on the crossing because of traffic. The Capitol did run this route for a few years when it was CSX.

    Looks like business is good on the AVR. Working as an engineer for a railroad, I can say the schedules, or lack thereof, sucks a lot of the time. It makes the family life a challenge if you can't be a little flexible. The big railroads tend to be like any other big Wall Street businesses. But when it all comes down to it, running a train is an awesome gig. Wouldn't give it up for anything. Well maybe winning the lottery, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 4 года назад

      I would imagine class 1’s would be the worst, since in the course of a transcontinental, a train could end up an entire day or so late, only halfway through the run, and what impression of a schedule they may have had, would be shot to hell. Short lines, at least the AVR, have their runs done in a single shift, so could very easily have a shift start at a certain time. Once you get to a company like CN’s Bessemer Sub, or the Buffalo and Pittsburgh, then timetable issues may pop up, not due to traffic conflicts, but just due to making poor time.
