Beta 1.8 was definitely the most memorable for me. It changed so many things about the game for the better. Definitely set the precedent for what Minecraft is today!
sadly when i updated my ps4 mc to bedrock 3-2 years ago i lost HALF of my worlds.... so i only have those update test worlds from like 2020 2019 etc... i remember building a city and i never got to complete it
As a beta player pre-1.8, seeing the old versions of the game brings me so much nostalgia. Life was simple back then. Mine, craft, build, enter the nether. No end, no endermen, zombies dropped feathers when killed, no hunger bar or experience. It was just you (possibly friends) and the world.

These videos are awesome retrospectives on the history of Minecraft. It perfectly encapsulates how far Minecraft has come. I remember playing before iron golems were in the game, and most “mountains” barely went above Y level 90 😂
for worse actually,nether is essentially hell it is supposed to be unconfortable netherrack texture nowadays is just cobblestone painted red. old netherrack texture had blood and bones in it,it made the nether to be uncomfortable.
I miss being able to block with the swords lol mostly bc it was a sign to come in peace before crouching or at least with the ppl I played with it was lol

I personally don't feel like the updates has been underwhelming - looking historically they've added more blocks than ever in the last couple of updates. And more to explore - there's just a lot further between each update, which may give that feeling.
You should’ve used the BetaCraft launcher for the older versions, that launcher fixes many things such as no sounds/skins in the older versions, and it contains many more Alpha versions then the official launcher.
Oh lord i feel ancient reading some of these comments 😂 I discovered the game back around alpha 1.1.. back then me and my best friend would have sleepovers and take turns playing huddled around a shitty laptop.. the hype when the nether update came out was insane. Probably because of this nostalgia, alpha 1.2.0 is still my favourite version. It didn't matter that there was only 1 or 2 sources of food, any of the QOL stuff like sprinting and shift-clicking items didn't matter... Just exploring the funky world generation and building shitty castles was so insanely fun. Modern minecraft is a great game, but no other version will ever be able to trump those memories for me. Personally, I love the old cobblestone texture, it's beautiful and feel like old, very pixel and 2D games (which I never played but saw some references and even watched the old sirenman game)
I generally prefer the old textures too. The new ones look excessively bland and blurry (though the new gold, emerald and diamond block textures, as well as wheat, potato and netherrack textures are better imo)
I have a vivid memory of me hopping on my computer as a kid and getting super excited over the 1.8 update. I really want to go back to this version and experience it again.
This is actually something I've always been thinking of and tried this year. It's really fun because you don't get overwhelmed and can appreciate the little thing. Every update is like a reward and new exploration.

Finally watching this masterpiece. I think it's a bit difficult to pick just 1 update as the best. I started playing with 1.7 The Update that Changed the World, so it will always hold a special place in my memory. In terms of changes to game depth, I feel that update was the turning point for updates having a stronger impact on gameplay, and set the stage in a way for future updates to be bigger and bolder.
I haven’t played Minecraft for a long time but when I was younger I remember watching tv and it was so nostalgic watching these textures because even though I didn’t play it back then I just loved watching let’s plays and having fun
so fun fact the trees in your old chunks do that because when they added leaf variants a bug occurred where the decay values interfered with the values of leaf types due to how block ids were added the leaves decay values caused that multiple leaf varieties, if you had used shears on leaves or made slabs in alpha 1.2 or before. they would have the missing texture because if the block id change for wooden slabs and leaves. hope this helps
My favourite update has been and always will be the "pretty scary update", it added the wither but also jack o lanterns! I remember using jock o lanterns to light all my builds at the time

I loved the aquatic update because I love sea turtles in real life, and have never seen the beach but dream of it constantly, so getting all this beautiful ocean life just a click away is enjoyable. fun fact, it's also the final update the Nintendo DS editions received!

Just some advice, don't use the official launcher for old versions! They're broken, skins and sounds don't work. Use a 3rd party launcher like BetaCraft or MultiMC for them!!
I'd like to give you a tip if you ever do this again - Use Betacraft, it archives up to release 1.5.2 and has a treasure trove of versions not in the launcher. And coal, iron, diamond and gold have always been in the game, have been since classic for 3 of them and indev for diamonds, they were just a signifigantly higher pain in the ass to find in Infdev
I remember hoarding iron on the earlier days of Minecraft multiplayer because I was afraid the people I was playing with would retaliate against me and take over the power that I have
The fact that creepers in the old versions didn't just sneak upon you but literally JUMP is so terrifying! I scream so often because they surprise me from behind, now imagine you got jumped upon from a walking BOMB!!

For me the most memorable updates were 1.9 (when i finally bought the game after years of only playing on friend's houses and watching let's plays), 1.12 (my favorite update back then, absolutely loved the new color pallette) and 1.16 because of the pandemic

My dad bought a new Macbook then i asked him to give the old laptop to me for computer practical classes, he agreed. Then i was just scrolling thru apps then i saw a game named "Minecraft". I started playing Minecraft on Mobile. I played Minecraft Lite at first (because my parents didn‘t want to pay for Pocket edition at first) and a bit later I started playing Pocket Edition. I remember that the world size was very limited in Pocket Edition at the time and the only friendly mobs were chicken, pigs, sheep and cows so I would build little towns for them to live in lol. I remember I was very excited when infinite worlds and villages became a thing in Pocket Edition.
Honestly, I hate the old textures and love the new ones lol. Been playing since 2013 ish. I genuinely think people like old Minecraft more because of nostalgia. But I genuinely have not heard any genuine arguments to back it up otherwise...

For me the most memorable updates were 1.9 (when i finally bought the game after years of only playing on friend's houses and watching let's plays), 1.12 (my favorite update back then, absolutely loved the new color pallette) and 1.16 because of the pandemic
I played the older textures with my friends on a multiplayer world for a horror theme and it was really nostalgic and terrifying at the same time.

Minecraft 1.12-13 was the best in my opinion, i started playing minecraft when i first started going school. My dad bought a new Macbook then i asked him to give the old laptop to me for computer practical classes, he agreed. Then i was just scrolling thru apps then i saw a game named "Minecraft". I played it in like 2017 i think and my first ever spawn was in a badlands biome! Im one of the rarest players now :D

For me the most memorable update is the nether update, even i started playing on version 1.5. THE NETHER update chance the game for de best in my opinion. When the End update arrives we will have another epic update.
I started playing Minecraft on Mobile. I played Minecraft Lite at first (because my parents didn‘t want to pay for Pocket edition at first) and a bit later I started playing Pocket Edition. I remember that the world size was very limited in Pocket Edition at the time and the only friendly mobs were chicken, pigs, sheep and cows so I would build little towns for them to live in lol. I remember I was very excited when infinite worlds and villages became a thing in Pocket Edition.
Honestly, I hate the old textures and love the new ones lol. Been playing since 2013 ish. I genuinely think people like old Minecraft more because of nostalgia. But I genuinely have not heard any genuine arguments to back it up otherwise...

for most textures theyre just the same quality but there are some, like netherrack, that are objectively better in programmer art. its meant to be hell, i want a texture that looks like it stinks of blood and rot, not some goofy beans
