i know libraries don’t always have the books you’re looking for, but i really think us readers need to move toward less buying and more going to the library, trading books, buying books from others who don’t want them anymore, little free libraries, etc.
agreed!!!! we promote SO much consumerism in the book community! we can still love & enjoy books without buying for the sake of buying - it's just so senseless to me; this video was a great lesson!
Yes! I've been using pangobooks a lot recently. Even specifically looking for what I want used at my local indie. Definitely my preference over buying a new expensive hardback without much thought.
I definitely have a book buying problem and I’m truly trying to cut back. Getting a job at a bookstore was the best and worst choice of my life! I get 30% off and yes it’s awesome most of the time but now I buy too many books and general bookish merch. Being around people who also love books doesn’t make it easier and not to mention I’m becoming my mother and have started a cookbook collection! To be fair I get most of my cookbooks used but still 😭😂
Life is short, read books you want to read, and pass along the regrets to someone who will truly enjoy! I have definitely gone through phases of buying too many books and later realize I'm just never going to pick it up... but it served a purpose in the moment, I enjoyed having it on my shelf for a while, and now I think of it like a treasure for someone else to find, if someone else finds it in the little free library or at the thrift store for a dollar it will make their day!
“Just because it’s 3,99 doesn’t mean you need to own it”. Love that quote. We really need to get out of our consumerist behaviour loop and I think it helps a lot if the Booktube community (but also the RUclips community in general) stimulates the culture of sustainability rather than the culture of consumerism. I think videos like these already make for a start in that. Acknowledging that just buy/buy/buy doesn’t make you happy. That just because it’s cheap (or not, since people on booktube also spend ALOT of money on books they don’t read or read just once and then never look at again) you don’t have to buy it all the time. I think that’s a good lesson for people watching these videos. The whole culture of consumerism is so toxic and we need to move away from that.
I work at a used bookstore (a blessing and curse) and my collection has grown exponentially. I told myself I can only buy fantasy and romance in paperback (I just prefer physically reading those genres), everything else has to be an e-book or audiobook through my library or kindle.
One of my goals this year was to read my owned books and stop buying so many. January I did well. February.... I've bought 21 books plus got 3 for my birthday. I only spent about $55 on the 21 though. As we can see I'm a sucker for a sale. Also my local library is TINY they have a terrible selection.
0:16 great idea!!! i should do that instead of going to buy more tomorrow lovvvve you need to continue the series because they are actually amazing 🥰 me loving the raven boys (reading it rn for the first time) and hearing you say the fourth isnt satisfying 😭 ahhh hopefully she does answer those questions ugh idk i hope soooo
same here! My issue is that english is not my first language, so the descriptions and names of clothing, things and just general historical surroundings feel like homework lol
Using the library really changes how I go about buying books, in that I don’t do it nearly as much any more. Of course, I still buy some, but a lot of time I think “I can get this from the library” or “do I need to own a physical copy of this?” I’m lucky enough to have a good library system, which I know is a privilege, but it’s cut back on my spending so much. I don’t have as many regretful purchases now. I got so tired of buying books that I’d heard people talk about only to give them 1-3 stars. Much happier as a borrower now!
I buy used books off Amazon. I know I spend too much but it's like Christmas when they come in the mail; a feeling of euphoria comes over me and it lasts for the rest of the day.....I think it's worth it even if my bank account doesn't agree.
Oh! I forgot to say...I can totally understand and respect the reading for escapism too!!!! I read different things for a lot of differing reasons, myself, honestly-but for something more like escapism sometimes, as well. I wish more people gave reading for lighter/less-serious reasons a little more respect than they often do. I think reading things without worrying how realistic something is or what[ if any] significant "message" or "lesson" it's teaching or not isn't always a bad thing either-and it should be perfectly okay, if different people are looking to get completely different things from what they read, or do read in general for totally different reasons. People's differences can be every bit as important and every bit as much a good thing as what they have in common, sometimes. And, while reading to think or contemoplate regarding various things or to learn or whatever can be great, I think reading just to flex your imagination or have an adventure or a good time or such can be equally wonderful in different ways too. 🙂
Me too! I like thrillers in audiobooks, and if its a 5 star or im totally obsessed with it, i will buy a copy. Thrillers are generally a hit or miss. I do recommend this to save shelf space or money, pick up the audio first, also for romance. Those two genres are easy to digest even while multitasking.

For the last couple of days I've been debating if i should just buy an e-reader, like kobo or kindle so that i don't spend shit tons of money, but I'm afraid ill make that investment and end up regretting it, cause i like having physical books that I can hold even tho my pockets are hurting. I also like the idea of passing my favorite books to my child or nience/ nephew

girls on the verge made me cry but ultimately made me smile like an idiot. for me, it was truly a testament to the power of a woman’s choice and female friendships. it was 100% worth the read to me
Yeah, girls on the verge was really powerful and also stressful for me, I felt like it captured the anxiety of being pregnant and wanting not to be and feeling trapped in that situation, confronting obstacles and feeling deadlines looming… yeah the claustrophobia of that situation, from experience, it did super well… but I read primarily to understand and process the world rather than escapism but if I was reading for escapism this book would have made me feel desperately trapped probably 😅
I need to just get better about waiting until I can either find them at the library or super cheap because I've been burned by succumbing to the hype. I've learned that I just don't care for magical realism, most fantasy, YA contemporary, science fiction, or historical fiction. And these are genres that are well loved by the big channels that get the ARCs. I still love them but it's more for their personality than shared reading tastes. So it feels like I'm always a year behind as I wait for the hype to die down and get a broader audience.
I had The Strange Case… on my TBR for a while before picking it up. I can definitely tell you that once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. That continued onto the second book, however, I lost steam by the third. I think you’ll love the strength of these young ladies.
Yeaaah... the biggest problem with The Name of The Wind is unfortunately the main character. Perhaps twenty years ago he'd have been acceptable when perfect, beautiful, flawless heroes were more acceptable, but these days he comes across as arrogant and intensely annoying. If you don't like him, which I definitely didn't, it's a slog to get through. And if you do like it... then you're screwed anyway, as the series has been stagnant for over a decade now. The author has shown no signs of being anywhere near finishing the trilogy and appears to have lost interest in it. Sigh.
I went to the Goodreads page for the Secret History, as I don’t know much about it, and I just love your review and all of the comments telling you not to read the book 🤣🤣🤣
The Secret History has legitimate substance. I just finished reading it. It started a genre that mostly played to the style, a “dark academia” wave, but from what I hear it’s better than all the rest.
Honestly my trick is that you go to the library. Then if they don't have it, sign up for a million different library apps, and chances are you'll find what you're looking for. Either an e-book or an audiobook. And then if you can't find it anywhere use honey to buy it on Amazon.
Sometimes, I don't actually crave more with every character I like either, so I totally get how that might not be a thing which lands as well for everyone. Magnus Bane is one that I actually _do_ crave more of....my own reluctance to read his spin-off books myself though, despite the fact that I own them and do want to read more of him, is because .. Cassie Clare tends to only co-write her Magnus stories rather than authoring them exclusively by her own self, and the way that the other authors write Magnus Bane[ or the other author's interpretation(s) of Magnus Bane's character] just doesn't always hit as well for me as the original version of him. If that makes sense?😅😅 And that's something I discovered personally while reading The Bane Chronicles(collection of Magnus short-stories). Lol And because the Magnus spin-off is whole entire books, not only short-stories, it's not going to be as easy for me to get over it or get through it if I don't end up enjoying the way he's written in the spin-off books as it was when just reading a few short-stories.😶 🙃🤣🤣

Thank you. Thank you. I read "The Secret History" and hated it. There were no characters that I liked. Normally not liking characters can be OK if I was into the story, but this seemed like a vehicle for the author to write about crap she studied in school that is totally useless in life unless you wrote a novel set at a college. I cannot for my life understand the fandom for this book. I have read other dark academia and liked it. I just didn't get this.
Probably for the best that you unhauled the Rothfuss book. My husband has read it and the next one as well and from what he’s told me I feel like you would really not enjoy the protagonist at all. The series also apparently goes downhill in the second book.
I am a Nora Roberts fan, and I still couldn't get through Honest Illusions after two attempts, so I wouldn't recommend that one. My reading tastes have changed dramatically in my reading years from western American historicals to erotic romance to ya fantasy romance to romcoms to romantic suspense and lots in between. It happens.
I have to admit I'm jealous. I don't have the luxury to go to the library and check out whether I like a book before buying it. I read almost exclusively in English and my library's selection of English books is very limited (don't live in an English speaking country). So I have to buy books if I want to read them. More often than not they're ebooks because if I were to buy physical copies, they're mostly paperbacks but I prefer hardcovers. Sigh. I'd kill for some of the editions you have available to you. (Eyeing the Call Down The Hawk one especially...)
Hellooo love you and your channel. I was just going back to rewatch and add to my tbr from your 52 romance buzzfeed video and can’t seem to find it? I was wondering if this is just an algorithm thing or if perhaps you’ve removed the video? Hope you’re well
I used to be a pretty hardcore fan of ya fantasy but for the past 5 months or so my brain just decided to reject every book with a plot and now it just wants shitty romances ✨

Probably for the best that you unhauled the Rothfuss book. My husband has read it and the next one as well and from what he’s told me I feel like you would really not enjoy the protagonist at all. The series also apparently goes downhill in the second book.
I loved the secret history!
It happens.
Lol I check my shelves and ask what were thinking.
Hope you’re well
it's still public, you can search the video on my channel from desktop!
Omggggg I need to do this video 🤣😭 SO MANY REGRETS lol
Um if you're interested in getting rid of The Secret History, I would def buy it from you lol it's one of my favourite books ever
she said its not for sale
Hahah how I would kill for this Donna Tartt first edition
I feel like this video is in "fast-forward" all the time! 😁
I relate to so much of this.
Thank god I never bought in the name of the wind and the secret history 😆😂 I really wish I had dnf both books
Something Wonderful - so good!!!
Love Judith McNaught!
i've liked 1 and disliked 1 of her books so i'll be interested to see what i think of this one when i get to it
I used to be a pretty hardcore fan of ya fantasy but for the past 5 months or so my brain just decided to reject every book with a plot and now it just wants shitty romances ✨
I'm just curious, do you remove the dust jackets of all your books? :O
if i've read it/know i'm going to keep it yes. they're in a bin in my closet
What is it about dust jackets that you don’t like?
I couldn't even read 3 chapters in A Secret History. I just didn't care and was disappointed already
Chandler: Oh yeah I’ll like it cuz ladies
Same girl same
I have tried to get that copy of The Secret History for a decent price for so long. Closest I got was a second print hardcover.

Ma'am you have a hard cover of the grisha trilogy that doesn't have a permanent netflix sticker on it. so many people want to be you.
