Bath is absolutely my favourite city for bookshopping in the UK! I want to gently prod you to consider going to Yorkshire for all the Bronte love. Haworth for the parsonage and ambience, Scarborough to see Anne, the moors... So excited for more of your adventures.
I can see why you feel that way about book shopping in Bath, and I must agree!!! I’d absolutely love to go to Yorkshire! As a huge fan of the Brontë sisters, it would be a dream! Fingers crossed we can make it there some time in the future ☺️
Yeah! Bookshop hopping with Carolyn and Leon! Great book haul! Thank you for sharing Bath images (so beautiful) with us. Have a great week you two! ❤📚🐿
Thank you for this cozy, bookish vlog❤ I really enjoy every minute of it ❤ I love all the book recommendations ❤ Have a great day and can't wait for your next video ❤
I love to see you enjoying visiting my part of the world. Both Bristol and Bath are wonderful in their own way. I consider myself very lucky to live 30 mins from both cities. Sometimes it takes watching others enjoying them, to fully appreciate that ❤❤. Thank you ❤🙏🙏
Leon, read Asimov's robot series like you mentioned! I'm a huge Asimov fan and that is my favorite series. It is so interesting to see the different ways a population can integrate AI into their world. Great series for this time period tbh. ❤ Thanks for the video, glad I got to enjoy Bath vicariously thru y'all.
Tell Leon this is what Jane Austen wrote in Persuasion:"it was the misfortune of poetry to be seldom safely enjoyed by those who enjoyed it completely and that the strong feelings which alone could estimate it truly were the very feelings which ought to taste it but sparingly".❤
Oh my god Brambly Hedge! I've never read the books, but I loved the TV version as a child, it's so adorable and cozy. I think it's right up your alley. 🧡
I really enjoy your videos and recall that you are reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. If you have access to Prime to it is on there, l am watching it for the second time and thoroughly enjoying it. ❤
Bath is really lovely! The bookshops are everything! What an amazing haul, beautiful editions! Wish you and Leon have happy readings! How i love this vlog! 💖💖💖💖
This was a delightful video. I loved the visit to Bath and all of your bookshop adventures. You have experienced my perfect trip. You purchased some amazing titles including all the wonderful poetry books. Thank you for taking your subscribers along on your Across the Pond series.👏🏻👏🏻🍂
I love Bath too, and Persephone and Topping. What a great haul! Legends is lovely; Robin Hobb is such a wonderful author (her characters and writing style); Orbital is contemplative and lyrical; loved Howl’s too. You’re tempting me so much, as if starting to work for a Waterstones wasn’t temptation enough 🤣
I am so sorry for missing your amazing videos for the last five weeks as I have been helping my mom with her cancer treatment but I’m so sorry to say that she has lost her battle ❤❤❤love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
I'm so sorry for your loss May you remember her with the most beautiful memories!May she rest in peace!I hope you feel at least a little comfort knowing that she is at ease and not suffering anymore
I’ve never read any Persephone books but I like the idea of the plain covers, so that you literally can’t judge the book by its cover! (But I do also love pretty book covers too!). Love your artwork it’s so cute! This month I’ve been doing Inktober and decided I’d use the prompt words to write an illustrated story, instead of just doing sketches. It’s been fun but quite a challenge!
I went to Toppings and Co in Edinburgh recently and yes, damage was done there as well. I'm usually quite good at only looking and maybe buying one or two books. This time it was 13 books 😂 Bath looks stunning, it's high up on my list. Enjoy your time across the pond! 😊
Bath was so cool! Went over there with my siblings once, and the best memory was getting a text from my little sister one night to meet up with her and her bf (now bro in law) to tell me they got engaged down by the river. Great time there!
Bath is a great place to spend time in. I had a great time there, it didn't involved books but it did involve something starting with "b". Quite a hangover but worth it. But seriously, the "Memory Police" is beautiful and haunting, I am sure you will enjoy it. What it touched on stayed with me long after I finished it.
You’re right Monica dickens was Charles dickens great grand daughter. I read Mariana recently it’s really good. What a lovely visit and so delighted you visited Persephone ❤️📖
I read the entire of Hobbs works last year and I highly recommend - The entire of the realm of the eldering's is just so good! I'm currently reading Lonely Castle In The Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura and highly recommend!!
I went to a German school and 'Effie Briest' was part of the mandatory curriculum. In all honesty, there were only a few pieces of German literature that worked for me, but this one was fantastic. I really need to re-read it at some point. I hope you enjoy it, I think you're the first person who isn't studying German who I hear talk about it!
I am reading Mansfield Park for the first time right now! It is also my last Austen novel to Read.❤ I think Mansfield Park is the Jane Austen last frontier. Lol.
One of my favourite things about the bath crescent is that a lady that used to live there painted one of the doors yellow, and it caused an outrage, and even tho it’s not in the lease now to keep it yellow; the people that live there keep re painting it yellow when it fades. Toppings is such a beautiful bookstore, and that tote bag is actually so sturdy!! Glad you had a beautiful time in bath!
If you do make it to Oxford, not only is Blackwells huge, part of it called the norrington room was for a while considered the largest room full of books. But next door is also the Bodleian library shop and they work closely with tolkiens estate so they have a lovely collection
I loved The Memory Police when I read it earlier this year, such a beautiful and thought provoking book. Yoko Agawa has quickly become one of my favorite authors after reading that and The Housekeeper and the professor and I can't wait to read more from her.
So excited that you`ll be reading Clarice Lispector! I love her work. I read one of her novels and a few short stories in high school here in Brazil. Hope you like it!!!
Loved your trip to Bath - went there on our last visit from London- went on a tour, we had a few trips to England from Boston, and although we did more of Europe also, England, London - always our favorite - Im in a classic group rereading all the Jane Austen books , aren’t they wonderful. And I also am just reading James - on Booker list - the common interest you both have in books is so healthy for your marriage . My husband was a reader also, always enjoyable talking about reads - 😊
Mariana Dickens is the great grandaughter of Charles Dickens. _Piranesi_ is running to be one of my top 3 books I read this year , it was excellent for me !
Bath is such a wonderfully historic beautiful place. I thought the original store was first in London until the owner closed that store & moved to Bath and reopen. Im so glad you got to experience Bath, Persephone.
Looks like you had a brilliant time. I’ve read and enjoyed a few of these. I just finished Orbital last night and am going to Toppings to see Samantha Harvey speak on Friday. It’s absolutely beautiful, I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like it.
Here so early. It’s 7:50 am 😁💙 I love these vlogs Carolyn. I got the UK edition of Intermezzo because of you. I hope you continue to have a wonderful time in England.
I want to go back to Bath, but I got to spend an hour there. We got our Fish and Chips and we saw the Roman Baths. I went into Toppings and Company, but only briefly. We were in a hurry at the time. I really like NYRB publishing company, which seems to publish forgotten classics like Persephone.
Thank you for the bookish video. So kind and lovely. I'm jealous of your trip and your day, but I'm so grateful that you shared. So many good recommendations, I am most intrigued by "Orbital," it's on my never endng tbr list. Thank you both for the bright spot I really needed today.
I read Legends & Lattes and the prequel earlier this year and loved both! My hold for The Memory Police just came in after I saw it on booktok lol so getting to that one next! I miss England so much! Love reliving it in your across the pond series!
I was literally in Bath (from Tennessee) on Oct. 8th…. Went to Jane A. Centre and Toppings! We could have run into each other! I loved it. Got Biography about Jane and then Jane Eyre at bookstore.
I loved visiting Bath when I went to England. If you loved the city of Bath, you should watch McDonald and Dodds, its a fun buddy murder mystery TV Series. It is set and filmed in the city of Bath. Whenever I feel the need to return to those Idyllic buildings, I watch and am transported.
What a great haul! I collect those little Everyman library pocket poet books and I’d recommend the one titled “Letters” by Emily Dickinson. It’s one of my favorites from the pocket collection. Also, the Robert Frost book.
I need to return to Bath. I loved my trip there. At some point try and take a trip to Chawton to see the cottage where Jane lived with her mom and sister.
Ohh I've been wanting to visit Bath for quite some time, you have convinced me to go as soon as I can manage! 🥰 Also, as someone who went to school in Germany, seeing someone wanting to read Effi Briest voluntarily is crazy haha
Hi both, I love your book vlog. I live near Bath and love Toppings but have never been to Persephone’s - I am going to put that right in the next couple weeks!
Carolyn picks out a book for Leon. Leon finds himself drawn to the book Carolyn picked out for him, but he is uncertain why he was drawn to _the book Carolyn picked out for him_ . Truly, it is a mystery.
You know what! I read Howl's Moving Castle last year during my master's thesis writing, that's I how got into the anime, but I read it as an e-book. I have been wanting to re-read it and found, a couple of weeks ago, one with the cover same as yours. I absolutely love that cover and never not smile whenever my eyes land on it. We have same cover for Howl's Moving Castle. For some reason, I am so excited about that. :)
Oh Leon, I love the Romantic poets as well, and Shelley is one of my favorite author 💚 I have that same Everyman's edition of his poems (among many others). You have great taste😉 I also love how the German language sounds and I've studied it in high school and university. Hard but worth it. I finished reading Drive Your Plow Over The Bone Of The Dead last week and I really really enjoyed it! Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
Oh my gosh, how on earth did you carry all those books home?!?! You must both have Popeye muscles 😂 I'm so glad you picked up 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead'- it's one of my favourites, it's so strange and unique and I love the main character. I hope you love it too! Also Brambly Hedge is so gorgeous! The illustrations are super cosy and cute and I love to imagine what it would be like to be one of the tiny mice in their snug little home all cosy 😊
what a charming video, so happy and uplifting. I have read Mariana from Persephone books. You're quite right it is a slow companion of a book and full of delightful moments . The critics were scathing of it in her day which made me a little angry. I think you will love Legends and Lattes- it's great fun, and Robin Hobb's writing is exquisite. I have that copy of the adventures of Tom Bombadil with those exact illustrations -I'm so thrilled. My Father recently died and it was on his bookshelf but I don't know how long he had it- he was 91 so it could have been a long time and it's not in such good condition as yours 😃
As an Austrian I love that Leon likes the german language! 😅 Your illustrations are adorable! 💚💚 thank you for this great video! Schönen Abend (means „nice evening“)!
As soon as I saw the title I was like oh my god did carolyn go to toppings?!?! I completely agree with your love for bath, once or twice a year I get the train up from wales just to go book shopping and to have a cup of tea in toppings😭
I also was just so excited to see the brambly hedge book! As a child I used to sit and STARE at those illustrations especially the really detailed cross sections (I’ve now grown up to be someone who loves maps and to look at floor plans when I’m house hunting🙃)
Ahhh yes! Topping is truly the best ☺️📖☕️ Oh my goodness! I’ve been admiring the detailed cross section illustrations too! I can’t get over how beautiful the whole Brambly Hedge series is 🥰
Effi Briest is the book that got me into classics omgggg I never see booktuber, esp. US-based ones talk about Theodor Fontane! Can't wait for your opinion
My great great great great great great grandfather was an artist/illustrator that was credited as one of the writers of a tourism guide called A Picturesque Guide to Bath, Bristol Hot-Wells, the River Avon, and the Adjacent Country that was published in 1793. His name was Julius Caesar Ibbetson. I've read it online, I'd like to get an original hard copy, but it's $2200 on one rare book website I've found. My ancestor would have been 16 when Jane Austen was born. I think the book he wrote would be good for learning more about Bath and the area at the time Jane Austen was there.
Nice, I just bought Assassin's Apprentice as well. I believe the original series is 3 books and then it expands beyond that, but you can stop at the first 3.
Bath is absolutely my favourite city for bookshopping in the UK!
I want to gently prod you to consider going to Yorkshire for all the Bronte love. Haworth for the parsonage and ambience, Scarborough to see Anne, the moors...

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for coming along with us ☺️ We hope you have a great week too 📖✨
What a lovely bookish day. I imagine you both curled up with a good book and drinking your tea in the evenings. 📖❤️
That is exactly what most evenings look like 😄📖☕️
Bath looks so wonderful! Would love to visit there sometime 😊 I would love to hear both of your thoughts on the books. Have a nice week! 💛
I can’t recommend visiting Bath enough! ☺️ You’ll definitely be hearing about our thoughts on the books! I hope you’ve been having a lovely week!
Your excitement over the bookstores is so contagious! It's making me want to visit the UK again and escape to Bath
I’m so glad! ☺️

I hope you both enjoy your new books.

Bath is absolutely beautiful! A must visit for any book lover! 📖😘😍
I love to see you enjoying visiting my part of the world. Both Bristol and Bath are wonderful in their own way. I consider myself very lucky to live 30 mins from both cities. Sometimes it takes watching others enjoying them, to fully appreciate that ❤❤. Thank you ❤🙏🙏
I’m so glad you felt that way! I’ve experienced a similar feeling when I see people excited to explore New York ☺️
Leon, read Asimov's robot series like you mentioned! I'm a huge Asimov fan and that is my favorite series. Aww I can’t wait to watch the TV version, because the stories are so lovely! I’ve just read “Spring” and “Summer” ☺️
I really enjoy your videos and recall that you are reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. If you have access to Prime to it is on there, l am watching it for the second time and thoroughly enjoying it. ❤
You guys made me go out of my reading slump 😁🤗🔆🌧️🍁🍂🍃

Love this! When the Pride and Prejudice music started in the beginning, I knew it was gonna be good!❤❤
Bath is really lovely! The bookshops are everything! What an amazing haul, beautiful editions! Wish you and Leon have happy readings! How i love this vlog! 💖💖💖💖
this series has been amazing so far, bath seems so dreamy and all the books are stunning, so happy both you and leon had a good time :)
omg! Schiller - my first love! 😍 You would love his poems.
This is a fun video! The two of you together are perfect as your interests are each your own yet you both validate and respect each other.
Brambly Hedge!!! OMG, that series was such a great part of my childhood. My favourite is the Secret Staircase - I hope you adore them.
A programmer who is into poetry🤔 that's quite a special man you got there, Carolyn🤓
He is indeed 😆🤓
I love Bath too, and Persephone and Topping.

I’ve noticed that as well 😆📖💕
If you liked Bath, you should try going to Frome and Bruton nearby - they are different, but also lovely. I'm happy you're loving England so far! ❤
YES Tom Bombadil!!💕💕 The first two poems are just so unbelievably wonderful. The Sea Bell is also a great one, but breaks my heart for Frodo’s sake
One of my favourite things about the bath crescent is that a lady that used to live there painted one of the doors yellow, and it caused an outrage, and even tho it’s not in the lease now to keep it yellow; the people that live there keep re painting it yellow when it fades. This was absolutely phenomenal book haul! Bath just became a synonym for bookstores for me. 😊 Tom Bombadil is truly the cutest book I've ever seen. 💖
Such beautiful books guys!! ❤
Also, I LOVE lonely castle in the mirror. Read it years ago and never stopped thinking of it. My favorite cover too
So excited that you`ll be reading Clarice Lispector! I love her work. I read one of her novels and a few short stories in high school here in Brazil. Hope you like it!!!
It's always been my dream to go on a trip and go shopping for books in the uk like this. What a beautiful way to live vicariously.
What a wonderful bookish day you had, with all those amazing books and memories. Bath-who wouldn't want to be there? It's a wonderful place.

Mariana Dickens is the great grandaughter of Charles Dickens.
_Piranesi_ is running to be one of my top 3 books I read this year , it was excellent for me !
*Monica Dickens (Mariana is the name of the Persephone Book that Monica Dickens wrote.)
@@tdawna You're so right, thanks. I confused the names hahaha, my bad!
@@dailycarolina. You were right about the great-granddaughter part though! 😊
Bath is such a wonderfully historic beautiful place. I thought the original store was first in London until the owner closed that store & moved to Bath and reopen. Im so glad you got to experience Bath, Persephone.
Possibly Frederic Schiller is best remembered today for the contribution of the "Ode to Joy" to the Choral Symphony (the Ninth).
So happy you visited Bath
I want to go back to Bath, but I got to spend an hour there. We got our Fish and Chips and we saw the Roman Baths. I went into Toppings and Company, but only briefly. We were in a hurry at the time. I really like NYRB publishing company, which seems to publish forgotten classics like Persephone.
Oooooh those illustrated books look so beautiful!
Bath is great!❤ Then you MUST go to visit Oxford!!!❤ Another spectacular place filled with bookstores ! ❤
Thank you for the bookish video. So kind and lovely. I'm jealous of your trip and your day, but I'm so grateful that you shared. So many good recommendations, I am most intrigued by "Orbital," it's on my never endng tbr list. Thank you both for the bright spot I really needed today.

Also, the Robert Frost book.

i lovee those pocket poets editions so much, i read the one on books & libraries
Ohh I've been wanting to visit Bath for quite some time, you have convinced me to go as soon as I can manage! 🥰
Also, as someone who went to school in Germany, seeing someone wanting to read Effi Briest voluntarily is crazy haha
I love Bath!! 💖 so happy for you Carolyn!!
Looks like soooo much fun!
What a beautiful experience!! You and Leon are so cute!!
Love that you picked Effie Briest.
I love Effi Briest! Planning on rereading before the year ends.

When I watch a haul like this it makes me feel better about getting a really high ‘books bought:books I’m capable of reading’ ratio 😅📚
I’m so glad 😆

I also purchased The Adventures of Tom Bombadil in the same edition! ☺️
awwww, you visited one of my fav cities in the UK!!! I hope Oxford is also on your to-visit list
Went to Bath last summer but didn't get to go to any of the bookstores! Next time! Really enjoyed thia booklog!❤
Nice, I just bought Assassin's Apprentice as well. I believe the original series is 3 books and then it expands beyond that, but you can stop at the first 3.
