Great to hear and see HD quality performances like this. JP keeps brilliantly reinventing himself & his talents. I have never heard him lay back & groove like this...? He looks like he is really enjoying himself as well. Bravo!!!
Nate Smith is a great in the pocket drummer. Really did a great job maintaining the groove with funky drum accents and syncopation. John Patitucci really put this together nicely. Very well coordinated overall feels with bringing the Bass lines with both Guitarist doing harmonies and solos. Nicely done.
The sense of proportion is what I like in these guys. They don't try to overwhelm you with the technique, but every single beat or note they play makes you feel they are world class musicians.
There's a bunch of stuff that those guys did(still do) that was really complex. When I hear that, I feel like they just having a blast without thinking about anything!
Being a dynamic player is one of the most basic principles of good musicianship no matter the genre, and playing at ones peak even half of the time isn't dynamic at all.
It's amazing how reliable Nate Smith is, his drumming is just from another planet and his gear suits his style perfectly, Patitucci knows what's up!!!!
I remember back in the days when Patitucci was considered the best bass player alive, strange how his popularity declined so quickly, he has such a great musicality...
There are a lot more 6 string players out there who have built on what he and Anthony Jackson did in the early days... Not necessarily better players but with a different approach.@@fretbuzz59 . He's still one of my top three guys -not just on 6 but also on upright. His melodic approach is just wayyyy advanced...
I like the articulation John gets when he plays that 4-string bass. It makes me curious about a lot of things: his strings, the pickups, the wood beneath that paint job, the rig, etc.
hi i tune me gtrs to g and this vid just confirms my liking of the softness of the sound of the electric guitar not the guitar bass...these ones are supposed jazz ones but they sure sound squaky to my liking..the ONLY little "prob" with my low tuning seems to be the low E but i havent tried nearly all string brands types and tensions yet ...im working on it ambitiously with floating bridges and different types of springs ...the neck rods dont need much adj..its really about the tension of each string and then put together for the liking of me and you...
I'm new to theses guys and liked how bluesy the first song was (JLR, i guess). Can anyone recommend other tracks that these guys, (or John) have done that's more bluesy?
they are both Yamaha. The six string is his signature. Not sure about the 5 string. Wouldn't surprise me to find out it's the exact same as his signature just missing the high C.
Hm, not real familiar with that distortion unit you mention, but the first song, 0:00 on, sounds like he's got an octave device of some kind, throwing an octave up. After that initial part, you're probably right that he's got some distortion on there.
The guitar is quiet in this mix. John’s bass us quite loud in this mix, but I get the impression from watching this, that John is kind of the center of focus, acoustically and visually to some extent, lol, I mean why is his shirt buttoned up all the way? Lol, kinda fits his nerdy personality anyway, I can groove on it.
With all due respect Mr Patitucci I'm a long time fan of your work and seen you perform live a few times way back with Chick. These two guitarists are really weak sauce. I'm sure they're nice guys and all but I'd give anything to be up there on stage in their shoes and I guarantee that I'd put the fire to it because there is no room for slacking when it's on. I'd put these guys to shame!! 😎👍
Thiago haha read it again now slowly. It says John Patitucci. He is a very famous bass player and the leader of this band. No mention of Petrucci anywhere
jep, more boring would it only sound with eric clapton as sideman in companion with awful Keith Richards. jazzgod, i´m thankfull john p. didn´t trudge into that trap....have mercy...
I really enjoy this direction Patitucci takes with this band. Awesome.
Excellent! John Patitucci's interactive style reminds me of Jack Bruce.
Great to hear and see HD quality performances like this. JP keeps brilliantly reinventing himself & his talents. I have never heard him lay back & groove like this...? He looks like he is really enjoying himself as well. Bravo!!!
Great interview from a humble Master. The world would just be better with many more like him.

Such a great band. Great groove..no overplays.I really enjoyed that!!
John never disappoint us..and Nate is such a groove killing machine.

They are world class Musicians. Where you been
yup, mastering of dynamics is basic. The whole thing should tell a story somehow, be understandble.
Thanks for the melody.
A lot of this music reminds me of Steely Dan, which is a very good thing :) also great to see Nate Smith on drums, my favourite new discovery!
It's amazing how reliable Nate Smith is, his drumming is just from another planet and his gear suits his style perfectly, Patitucci knows what's up!!!!
just a little hint for you: Look at "The fearless flyers"! have fun ;-)
TROP BON J'ADORE GRAVE ....... MERCI.
Really love this band 🔥😍
Simply brilliant! 😊
The sound ...... Is AMAZING!
wonderful drummer choice! also, I don't think I've heard John doing anything remotely similar in terms of style.... so cool!
Been a Petrucci fan for a long time . . .
But a Patitucci fan for even longer, lols
...true,..true.
Amo este Video,,,,, es una belleza
John is shredding that bass like a rock god!!!
THE BEST!!!!!
..heavy praise,...I find myself in agreement tho.🎵🖤🤘
still groovin like a monster.........awesome flow
Great performance.
Steve Cardenas' tone is raw and delicious!
Show, perfect!!!!
Love this! Love that John is just going for that old school jazz sound and I love his high tech string mute.
And he's playing flatwound strings! I don't think I've seen him do that before.
John is playing flatwounds since early 2000"s. And he sounds great on everything! A real legend!
Yes yes, true, But that funk too! +best
What Bass is John Patitucci playing?
Look at John's expression at 2:20 after that monster groovy intro with Nate. Oh maaan!
I remember back in the days when Patitucci was considered the best bass player alive, strange how his popularity declined so quickly, he has such a great musicality...
I know exactly what you mean. But then popularity has never seemed to mean much imo as far as art goes.
Davide Miozzi WTF are you talking about? He's been on the scene for 30+ yrs. Nobody is the hot new kid forever.
For my money, he is still the greatest. I think, because he has focused on stand up acoustic, he doesn't get as much press for his electric playing.
There are a lot more 6 string players out there who have built on what he and Anthony Jackson did in the early days... Not necessarily better players but with a different approach.@@fretbuzz59 . @@georgefelton5433 I've always enjoyed his upright playing more, but he's gotten more soulful on electric over the years.
love it !!
Adam Rogers, so good!!
Somewhere Tony Williams is happy.
I like the articulation John gets when he plays that 4-string bass. It makes me curious about a lot of things: his strings, the pickups, the wood beneath that paint job, the rig, etc.
Strings should be D'Addario, Aguilar and medium/high action as what I can see from images
All 5 of them. 😉
John patitucci good friend lang time harte of de bays wa wa wa wa wa very very very good album another world david witham cood pianist I love jazz
incredible
What a nice chap
♥️
The best ever
From first note,,,,,,oui!
Giants !!!!!
Adam Rogers is very cool.
20:20 Steve Cardenas making it scream and howl!
Wow! The second tune is like if you could have a Stern groove and then a Scofield groove..... or wait maybe a Chick groove and then a Herbie groove.
Oh Yeah!
Tasty!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Beleza beleza beleza
I'm new to theses guys and liked how bluesy the first song was (JLR, i guess). Can anyone recommend other tracks that these guys, (or John) have done that's more bluesy?
+MIKA RENOLDS thanks Mika! I'm into the funk too. Can't find your second comment with the other link tho for some reason.
Cardenas has a record called West of Middle that's pretty blues oriented. Rogers and Smith played in Chris Potter's Underground, which was very funky.
0:31 Spoonful?
Is John using an Octave pedal in the first tune? Jesus!
edan, Patitucci bapaknya Bassis dunia ...
I never knew that gray lighting was a thing.
this would have fit nicely on a Robben Ford record
I still prefer him when he was with Dream Theater
What?!?! You're taking about a different person entirely!
Yeah dude..unless you're making a joke cuz Patitucci is almost like Petrucci
LOL
hahaha you are soooo funny!!! yeah i still prefer Mozart when he was with Pink Floyd
Guy must be confusing Patitucci with John Myung (or Petrucci rather)
IT IS SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN THAT JOHN DOES NOT REMOVE THE BASS OR WHEN HE GOES TO SLEEP
monster drummer...ttl mind blowing....and i am a huuuuuuge sanchez fan....hmmmm
Ya, him and Sanchez are the most "musical" drummers for me!
Great sound..! Who knows which model of drums does Nate Smith play..?
Seems to be a Gretsch New Classic kit. Not sure about the snare though, probably some Ludwig (usually Nate Smith is on Ludwig).
Brother Idris Elba on the drums ladies & gents
Patitucci is my god
The thumbnail reminds a horror movie scene.))
and they play "spoonful" The Cream?
ta pálido
what yamaha bass is that?
anyone know what the title JLR means?
Is that a Variax bass? Looks like it!
🤘🐸🖖
Electric Guitar Quartet with two guitars ? Strange name !
3 guitars and drum kit...=a quartet
Does anyone know the title of the second piece? It's not Adam Rogers' "Ides of March"
Flatwound?
bass players...if you dont want to take your bass to cash converters tommorrow...dont watch this video...
Miguel Magalhaes Im thinking of selling my four stringers
Haha... His playing and tone is out of this world. I’m going to go practice now.
What kinda bass is JP playing?...looks like a Yamaha
they are both Yamaha. The six string is his signature. Not sure about the 5 string. Wouldn't surprise me to find out it's the exact same as his signature just missing the high C.
super funky. also, quite tedious
Sounds like good old Jack Bruce on bass...so cool
which effects is he using?
In the first song, I'd bet my middle nut he's playing with a Source Audio 2 Multiwave Bass Distorsion.
Hm, not real familiar with that distortion unit you mention, but the first song, 0:00 on, sounds like he's got an octave device of some kind, throwing an octave up. After that initial part, you're probably right that he's got some distortion on there.
Great Performances, but the guitar volumes are far lower than everything else. Or is it just me ?
that's how it should always be :D
The guitar is quiet in this mix. John’s bass us quite loud in this mix, but I get the impression from watching this, that John is kind of the center of focus, acoustically and visually to some extent, lol, I mean why is his shirt buttoned up all the way? you'd better listen in stereo-headphones
Scott Henderson please!!!!! Scott> these two guitar players...
You have a point...but they pretty good...pretty great even. This some smooth...🎵🖤🎸
How vigorously and groovy the bassist plays with the drummer. and how many do not play with them guitarists (( sory for my enlish
Got a Match??
🔥
I guess I was influenced by the guitar picks I have... yes, that kinda flew through my mind.
With all due respect Mr Patitucci I'm a long time fan of your work and seen you perform live a few times way back with Chick. These two guitarists are really weak sauce. where is John Petrucci?
reread the title my friend
"John Petrucci Electric Guitar Quartet - Jazzfest Bonn 2017 fragm." What now?
Thiago haha read it again now slowly. It says John Patitucci. He is a very famous bass player and the leader of this band. No mention of Petrucci anywhere
realy nice but the two guitar's player are bad....
jep, more boring would it only sound with eric clapton as sideman in companion with awful Keith Richards. jazzgod, i´m thankfull john p. didn´t trudge into that trap....have mercy...
love it!!!
