I've even seen some people that are so into their own religion that they say that they are better people than John Lennon because he spoke out against religion. The song is about peace and no amount of arguing about religion will make it any less beautiful.

To me, the song expresses subconscious self-loathing of people who live a comfortable life at the expense of others. While they are humming along to imagine, they drink coffee from beans picked by people who earn less than a dollar per day, and once the song is over, they start their day of work: Buy a new apartment building, kick out the tenants, remodel the apartments using unskilled and underpaid immigrant workers and ask for rents barely anyone can afford.
