Very interesting and if I may say a little amusing, in that your presentation reminds me of Fun with Flags, with Amy and Sheldon of the tv programme, The Big Bang. But what you describe is very important, and you both look very relaxed when you are playing, which surely helps you to be expressive in your interpretations. I love listening to your videos and recordings. Keep up the great work!
I just aquired my Lute and I'm so grateful for this wonderful introduction. I very much look forward to exploring your channel. Best regards. Peter (in Paris)
It is in a way tricky and needs skill but it pays back later when one can practice lute instead of visiting doctors to fix back problems :) Also it is very improtant to hold the left hand elbow down and not to rise it, if this bit is not observed then one gets pain in the back and this position does not work. In the next lesson we will pay attention to the elbow and its connection to the pinky finger position. Once the elbow is down the pinky can reach much further and easier on the fingerboard.
Thank you. Been reading about those long straps but not fully understood. Been using a regular guitar strap instead. Today I made myself a strap from your instructions, slippery mat and all. Makes a really big difference, before I had to balance the lute with my right arm.
Great idea to have these instructional videos. I've tried several times to use a strap that I sit on and it never worked for me but now I may have to revisit it. BTW, after watching you both on videos for years, it's nice to finally hear your voices!
:)))))Thanks!!! We love your films too! And knowing of your medical achievements as a doctor it is so great that you keep time for your lutenist alter ego and bring up such big contribution with your fine videos!!!
Absolutely without a doubt one of the best and most helpful instructional video on Yt. Extraordinarily well planned and explained. Thank you, I will visit your website. Really great and so very useful!!
I do not usually comment videos - but to produce such intro videos from professionals is marvelous idea. Am looking forward for more of those - and I will be changing my strap ;-). BTW On my knees I use a sheet of cellular rubber.
Thanks for making this video! In the past I have had to explain to renters in our Lute Society of America lute rental program how to make one and you have made it much easier for me to help them understand. Super. Thank you! If you are motivated to do it, think about making videos showing a beginner how to string a lute, tie gut frets, tune a 6c Ren lute, etc. Anything you produce will be welcomed!
Very informative video! I look forward to seeing future instalments from you. I've been considering using a strap with my guitar and this probably would work quite well.Cheers,Wilson
Hi! I have a doubt.. is there any modification required in this method to hold the renaissance lute, since the angle has to be more horizontal? excellent video and thanks!
In fact you can lower the strap so it can be more horisontal, also depents what height you are and ho small or big your lute is. We play renaissance this way as wll with no trouble. Some people like to put something underneath the lute to have it higher. It all depends on what you play and how you do it. We can say that this way is most comfortable for regular renaissance lute and later. If you are talking about mediaval and other extreem "thumb in" technique than it might need some adjustments especially for the tall players.
Cinghia nera con abiti neri (esclusa la maglia della donna)...ma quando si producono video non si dovrebbe tener conto delle elementari "leggi" della percezione visiva?
This has solved my biggest problem since starting Renaissance lute almost a year ago.🎉
I wish my Walmart had a lute department...

This is great. I need a strap and this was so helpful. I need the end pin though, so that’s the first task.
Thanks for your advice and all the best! A
Nice!
Thanks, I was searching for this information.
This is one of the best instructions to start with lute. As a guitar player, the lute is so much more slippery, and positioning is very tricky.

What is that beautiful piece playing during the intro?
Never mind, found it!
A gdzie polskie napisy? :P
I dont have any fixer thing piece on my lute to tie the strap onto, can i screw some onto the lute or how should i do?
You should ask a maker to make one for you, maybe a violin maker can help if a lute one is not in proximity. Good Luck!
I must warn you that some of the anti slip carpets can cause damage to the varnish of the lute, some are very sticky
Indeed, but better damage the varnish than the back:)))

Si tratta soprattutto di musica:)
Je voudrais écouter Scylla dans l'enfant et la mer ou dans le château dans le ciel: je découvre Scylla
Merci par avance.
J'insiste si vous pouvez..
