Daniel sorry about your Old Boy Corona. I have had very surprising good luck with a lighter from Ali Express. The brand is Spunk and it almost looks like the Corona old boy. Does require flint though, I've found piezo electronic lighters somewhat unreliable and prefer flint. It only cost me $11.00 +3-4$ shipping. Its been working for almost 4 months very well, flame is very adjustable, also has tamper just like Old Boy. but does not move with the smoothness and precision of the Old Boy. I have an Old Boy Corona since 1982 it still works perfectly but I only use it at home for the very reason you experienced.
I use inexpensive Chinese piezoelectric dual flame lighters for daily stuff. The best ones, with a torch for lighting cigars, and a soft flame at 90 degrees offset for pipes, are getting pretty scarce, but they do show up from time to time. *Jobon* was the most frequent brand name I saw, but there have been many rebrands that can be had. Part of my personal pipe smoking gear is the excellent Peterson pipe lighter. It has no redundant tools or tampers that eat up volume, and has a HUGE butane tank that rarely needs refilling, especially since I keep the flame dialed way down for precise pipe lighting and avoiding the chance of rim charring. FWIW, I owned an actual Corona Old Boy lighter back in the 90s, but it was not only expensive but fell apart after just a few months of normal use. The Peterson Old Boy style lighter I have is a _lot_ sturdier and I'm into my 4th year of owning it with zero problems. Just saying...if your Corona falls apart (the flint holder's the usual culprit) I'd suggest replacing it with the Pete. BTW, an inexpensive alternative to the pricy Corona flints are the quite _inexpensive_ Kiribi flints. A little glass bottle of them is only $4.00 for twenty of them. My Pete lighter is very picky about flints and none of the other cheap alternatives like the Zippo flints would produce ignition, but these Kiribis work great. I recall that you couldn't get items from Smokingpipes shipped to you, but here's their listing as an example: www.smokingpipes.com/accessories/lighters/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=154019 Last, I strongly caution against using cheap butane fuel like Zippo's in lighters, especially your favorites. It's not brand snobbery, the cheap stuff really does contain impurities that can clog the fuel lines and build up a tough black residue that almost needs to be chipped off in more frequent cleanings using the cheap stuff requires. Contrariwise, the Vector 14X filtered butane I use in all my lighters has never clogged them, and when infrequent cleaning is needed only leaves a powdery tan residue that brushes away easily. It's a bit pricier, but well worth it to me, and available on eBay and Amazon, often at surprisingly inexpensive prices. Hi Daniel, I don't know if this is possible, but have you tried to check the flame adjusting mechanisem, so how it works. Can you unscrew and take out the flame adjusting screw, can you do something there? The screw has somekind of a function and maybe you can make a small adjustment or insert something to lower tge flame. Just thinking. Nice lighters. Have a pleasant weekend, Janez
Janez - i did turn the flame up and down using the screw... but not down enough - it is impossible... but you got an idea i have to investigate - to put something under the screw might be a solution... will check... thank you
Same problem with some of that type and with the spring of the starter. Recently a kind of that lighter ruin the rim if my mastro de paja . Arghhhhhh!!!!
i found it.. problem with that lighter - it has a flint like my Oldboy... so it is no use for me... i am searching for cheap, electric starting flame lighter, no torch for sure - that will ruin tobacco and pipe too....
