Not all men are manly men some are compassionate and more sensitive,
Not all women are girly girls some are strong-willed independent women.
That being said these just characteristics and personalities, I don't think it effects gender, but that's just my opinion.
This just confused me even more. I'm trying to research it because I thought it was kinda weird and I don't want to have a negitive outlook on things. This didn't help at all 😓

I got what the person was saying, but I think some miss the point of the boxes and actually complicate it more than necessary. The boxes IMO state what reproductive parts did you get born with. So yes, if you have penis = M & vagina = W. The doctor isn't and shouldn't need to account a future transformation or what a person later in life feels that they are or should have been born as. It's really you're born with a penis or vagina, done.

Honestly, no, this doesn’t help. I’ve been trying to understand this contemporary concept of “gender” for a long time, and I keep landing at a dead end.
If the differentiation between male and female isn’t physical, then what is it? I’m told it has nothing to do with presentation, names and pronouns, attraction, clothes, hobbies etc. either.
So what is it?
I’ve asked this a lot, and it always comes back to what a person “feels like.” But how can you feel like something that isn’t defined in the first place?

You lost me after 1:25. Non binary sounds like it has more to do with clothes whereas cis and trans has more to do with being Male or female.
From what I learned, nonbinary is a gender identity that is outside of just male and female, when it's about clothes and looks it's usually expressed as beeing androgynous. For example a person can be nonbinary androgynous, or a person could be male androgynous, etc.

It's a great point. If it's all based on perception of what makes a man or a woman, then I don't see a problem in people respectfully disagreeing with the notion of non-binary, given that the majority of people believe a man or woman to be defined by physical traits and sexual organs.
In my view, sex is the same as gender. If one doesn't feel like they belong to given stereotypes/characteristics, then I agree everyone should dress and have the traits that they like. That's fine but most of society will still have their definition of someone being a man or a woman
I’m confused because shouldn’t gender based on biological factor rather than ‘feelings’ and ‘identity’? You’re saying penis and vagina, but it’s more than that - it’s your hormone, how your brain is formed, puberty, bone density, etc. Just like how we have women vs men sports categories in Olympics to promote fairness. I know about intersex but that’s such a tiny fraction - I will have easier time understanding if there were people who were born as intersex and decide to keep their intersex physicality and want to be called as non binary because its based on a biological definition. If based on feelings to define gender, to me, there shouldn’t even be a spectrum between man and woman to begin with - or even a human, maybe some days I might feel like I’m not human at all, maybe more like a cat? Maybe Sometimes I feel like I’m a baby boy, so call me non binary baby? Like does this construct extend to other biological factors like age also? Cuz I might be 60 yrs old biologically but I might ‘feel’ like 18 yrs old on a certain days… and age is a construct made by humans. So is it rude to ask about your age also? Vice versa, I understand trans because to them, biologically, they were born in a different gender body - thereby biologically goes under tremendous stress and risks their life to go under a physical procedure to be born into a new ‘biological gender.’ Non binary, I hear that ‘sometimes I feel like a boy and sometimes I feel like a girl’ - what does it mean feeling like a boy? A non binary friend told me that they sometimes prefer dressing up like a boy with a boy haircut - but sometimes wanna be feminine by wearing make up. Aren’t all these stereotypes? Is it appropriate to use these stereotypes to define genders? Ive been trying to understand for years but I’m still struggling. I also see my non binary friends calling their pets as she/he - to me that doesn’t make sense because how do they know what their pets feel regarding genders? They’re calling it purely based on biological definition.
By all means, I highly respect and accept my non binary friends. But acceptance is different from understanding and empathy… I’m looking up videos like these to deeply understand but I’m struggling.

Okay I’ve just had my two close friends turn non binary (we’re 14) and I don’t want to hurt them by asking questions or judging them but I’m really confused so I’ll do it here instead. This might sound transphobic so if you’re sensitive about it please don’t read.
Why do people nowadays choose their “gender” when it’s not something you can choose anyway? Like whether or not you call it however you want , or you “feel like it “ , in the end of the day you can’t hide it at some point, can you?. Why did we make something that was purely scientific have nowadays become social and in most cases trendy?? And , isn’t lgbtq+ about “being who you are”? Then why people choose to escape from a gender just because of how they feel about it?Why? Can’t a female be masculine or vice versa? If it mostly judges the genders from the stereotypes about them then doesn’t it go against the principles of accepting yourself the way you are , so the whole lgbtq+ principles?

I don't know about non binary, but I can try to explain to you how it is to be trans (I'm a trans guy). Knowing all you stated, that women can be masculine, feminine, something in between or whatever, and that the same applies to men, I can't avoid this recurring feeling/idea that I'm not a woman -and it's been there for many years, even if I tried to tell myself I can be the way I am while being a woman. It is like a very basic feeling, impossible to change. I had lots of pannick attacks and other mental related problems until I accepted the fact that, for some reason, and even if society sees me differently, I am a man. All that trying to be ok with being a woman only made me unhappy and anxious, but that started to change the moment I allowed mysef to believe in that weird feeling of "I'm not a woman/I'm a man". So... I can't explain why, if it is something in the brain or some information that gets stored in your psyche since early childhood, but, if it leads to healing, the feeling must be right and transition (just social or with hormones) is the path to take.
Just another thing: I didn't choose to be trans. Nobody would seriously choose to be such a thing because it's not nice at all. It's scary and exhausting to follow your inner feeling when almost everything outside of you tells you that you are wrong and delusional; and, if you don't follow it, it makes you miserable. Even the people who "accept" that you are trans don't really believe it until you have been on hormones for years and your outer appearance matches their conception of man or woman. It's really fucked up, so, trust me, nobody in their senses would choose that. We are just that way and we are trying to feel normal and happy, like anybody else. I hope it helped you!!!

Although I can’t lie that it’s not 100% cleared I still learned a lot. I didn’t think of it like a psychic matter to begin with. In fact I judged it solely on the fact that people nowadays just rush it with these important things just for their public image. So it lead me to generalize most cases and put everyone in the same box so it made me forget or actually ignore the true original source. Of course I don’t know how it feels so I will never be able to understand completely, and the “non-binary” gender is even more confusing , but just knowing that it’s psychological made it easier to imagine. Why is it that all these videos explaining this "system" are done by young people. I'd like to see a doctor with degrees explain it better because these young people have no credibility whatsoever. Their personal experiences should not count as credibility at all.

try looking at the APA, the DSMV, or type "non-binary" or anything along those lines into google scholar. or you can look at ancient cultures and how they thought of gender like how the ancient egyptians and Greeks had genderless and gender fluid gods and as far as I can remember (not a history buff) were accepting of people who identified in those ways, it was only when abrihamic religion spread that views were changed. don't take my word on that, do your research, I am a programmer with biology and chemistry knowledge, and first hand experience of dysphoria, not a psychologist, sociologist or history person.
I am 38 and non-binary and there are many doctors who prescribe hormones for NB people if they choose to go onto hormones. There are also surgeons who perform surgery on NB people such as breast reductions of removals knowing full well why they are having surgery. There are also plenty of psychologists who work with NB clients and other trans people, they are supportive and knowledgeable with regards to the physical (gender dyshoria) and social difficulties that trans people have (whether trans men/women or non-binary). You tube is mostly a "young people" platform. I myself wish there were older non-binary people making videos. Maybe I shall take this on myself ;)
I am a doctorate with a degree in psych. It is a full time job providing these young people with reality checks.

This is something I sort of struggle to understand. I really do have an open mind when it comes to the way that people choose to live their lives. Many women work in what are typically considered to be masculine fields and many men work in what are considered to be feminine roles. Men and women both dress to appear as the opposite gender, with many going through reconstructive surgeries to have the genitals and breast of the desired sex. Where my mental conflict lies is that even if you choose to live your life as a different sex you were born as, that doesn't really change the basic facts.

To me, non binary makes perfect sense because gender identity isn't your genitalia. It's a cognition, behaviour and expression. I think people fail to understand that sex is only what genital a person has and gender is deeper than that.
A definition of female is NOT someone who has a vagina, someone who gives birth and has breasts. Definition of a male isn't someone with a penis and scrotum. By that logic then, women with small breasts or women who have cannot give birth to a baby aren't woman because she technically doesn't have breasts and she can't do what a typical female body does. Men with small penis or scrotum isn't men because he technically has no penis or scrotum.
Femininity and muscularity is much deeper than that and it is a cognition, behaviour and thought process. If you are not a man the way you think, feel and act, then your penis doesn't make you a man. If you are not a woman the way you feel, think and act, your breasts and vagina doesn't make you a woman.
In gender non-binary's case, they don't identify as a man or a woman because of their cognition, or they behave in a way that they are both genders. Of course all gender no binary people are biological male or female. They just do not identity as either and that's not something unusual or hard to understand. Everything in life is a spectrum, not a two extreme ends of ideals

Linuistically speaking a man is what we call a man and a woman is what we call a woman. Everybody knows exactly what each of those is, but most people can't explain it. We have to deconstruct everything that we know (that hasn't been constructed verbally like everything you learned in school) before we are able to explain it.
With this definition non binary people would be people which cannot be identified as male or female by any means, but this doesn't really happen. In Ashley's case my perception switches between male and female every few minutes, but it's always one of those. The problem is that our brain is trained to recognize faces as male or female because that's what the world's made of.

Your premis as far as I can tell is that the doctor ticks a box, and that is what sex you are. This is fundamentaly wrong. Your sex is defined at the point of conception and discovered, not assigned, at birth, if not before. There are some excedingly rare duel sex conditions that you did elude to. However, as i stated, these are vanishingly rare in the population as a whole. Gender on the other hand is a sociatial thing. If you want to identifiy as non-binary or whatever, that's fine and of course its your choice. However, it doesn't make you so. Regardless of your choices in life, you can not change your biological sex. This is not phobic in any way. Its simply a biological fact.

Medically if u have Penis, you will be considered male but if have vagina then female. And if you are medically unable to fall in both portions since childhood then u will be considered as intersex. Because they have both sex in them due to lack of sexual organ development.

By theory and if you go by how you feel ,some people can feel like a lizard and then I have to accept them as such. Just keep the two boxes based on your genetalia I say instead of confusing matters because after all that's what its measuring your biological sex not whether you are a man today and feel like a women or versions of the 2 the next day and then alternating based on your feelings and thoughts. As for those with the in between genatalia well it can be explained on their birth certificate or whenever necessary say for medical reasons etc.

Hi Ashley. I seems to decide what I do by what is beneficial to me (for example decide what to wear by how much stuff a coat can carry) along with old habits. Would you consider me a gender non-conforming person, or would you consider me still a mostly male person, since even though I try to not judge something by its maleness or femaleness, maleness-associated (as seen by others) options turns out to be what I'm used to most of the time, because I'm more familiar with them for I'm raised as a boy?
That entirely depends. If you feel you are a man and are comfortable with being a man but like to wear what society thinks is 'fem' clothing you could be a gender non-conforming person if that is how you wish to label yourself.

What is a man or woman other than a biological fact of your body? You dont at all explain what else you're using to define it. I still don't understand if non binary is just a new word trend for being different (because we already have all sorts of different possible combinations that have a name, a community, real combinations for which real people fought so they can express free and be accepted for who they are, combinations that are all over and in between those 2 boxes, OR, is a real new thing, different and new to what it already exists, and for the first time in my life, it makes no sense to me. I understand everything possible, between those 2 boxes, taken as a singularity or as a combination from different factors' point of view, from the genetics, psychological to emotional and social and whatever other possible points of view it exists. But those are singularities or combinations of male and female. They exist. They are a choice. They are a beautiful painting of all the existing colors. Gender doesn’t dictate your personality. Just because a biological guy likes make up doesn’t make him a girl or non-binary. There is nothing wrong with a man doing something that is considered feminine. The term non-binary is bad because it encourages gender stereotypes and makes people think they are weird because they don’t conform to those stereotypes. Some people really do have gender dysphoria, but that doesn’t make them not have any gender. If anyone thinks they are non-binary, they’re not, just confused by the way society portrays male and females as being very different. It’s ok for you to be a woman that likes masculine things, but that doesn’t make you non-binary. I’ll call anybody whatever pronoun they want, but I don’t think it’s helping anything.
