    I forgot to include the list of food in the video, but here it is:
    - miso soup
    - kombu and umeboshi tsukudani with rice (simmered seaweed and plum)
    - cucumber salad
    - goma miso potato (sesame miso potatoes)
    - tamagoyaki (rolled omelette)
    - mini dorayaki (bean pancake)
    - shinoda-maki (chicken + veggies rolled in deep-fried tofu)
    - wagyu sukiyaki (hot pot with beef)
    This class was through Cooking Sun (not sponsored) and I had a wonderful time!! I took the Tokyo class, but they also had classes in Kyoto and Osaka

      Thanks for the list, I am still confused on food being more then just fuel. This is a new concept to me. Western culture is Macca's and coffee basically toxic culture and I try to stay away from that.

      @Lostachilles 3 месяца назад +14

      @@ligh7foo7I don't think that's western culture, tbh. May be more of an issue local to where you are.
      Where I am, and in all of the other western places that I've been (which is a fair bit of Europe), food is a shared bonding experience, and one that isn't usually rushed or unappreciated.
      It might be worth trying to travel outside of your locality and just trying to experience some other places in different communities. If you can afford to, travel out an hour or two by car or train or something and just find a random food spot that isn't part of a big franchise, and see what they've got to offer.
      You might find that you enjoy it a lot more if you slow down and take the time to be in the environment and absorb a little of the atmosphere whilst you appreciate the food and the people.
      To take it a step further, instead of ordering a meal, you could order small portions of several things that are different and seem interesting to you. Experience and variety really is key to the change that you're trying to see.
      Good luck on unlearning the negative associations!

    Here here Kylie. I'm a psychologist and one of my supervisors put it very well - 'food is love'. That can be a wonderful but also a heavy thing to fully acknowledge, especially since so many of us have a messed up relationship with it

    • @losj3020
      @losj3020 5 месяцев назад +67

      agreed. Someone mentioned that in some culture people ask as "have you eaten?" in lieu of "I love you" but also: cutting fruits is often a show of affection. Friends share their homecooked lunch boxes. When a person meet someone for the first time after a long time apart they invite the other for a meal or snack. In my case every time I say I love a certain snack my dad would buy it for me in bulk even though I never ask him. Most family has certain fav places to eat or celebrate. It's such a widespread way of showing love

      In my opinion it didn't help me at all...I've ALWAYS loved food, that love was the main reason my ed started. So constantly hearing "food is fuel" made me feel ashamed more than anything

    • @rat-gang-
      @rat-gang- 4 месяца назад +42

      @@MridiniMandalreal, the 'food is fuel' idea really exacerbated my restrictive ED because i was convinced i knew exactly how little 'fuel' i needed to survive, and anything more than that felt shameful.

    The way I see the "food is fuel" phrase is that it can be used differently depending on the situation. Do you not want to eat anything because your anxiety is up or you are having a bad self image day, then reminding yourself that food isnt bad, that you need to fuel your body is good. Are you having a rough day from work or are celebrating a friend's birthday or is it rainy outside? Then food is fuel for your heart

    • @theConcernedWyvern
      @theConcernedWyvern 3 месяца назад

      I think it can be a very good phrase. I use it to remind myself to eat even when i dont feel like it.
      I have had something similar (the attitude of "food is ONLY fuel") used to berate me when I'm picky or don't feel like eating. Ive also had it used to tell me I'm eating too much.
      I'm glad it didn't ruin the concept of "food is fuel" for me, but that experience made it very hard for me to enjoy food without feeling guilty about it. I also really like the science behind things and that phrase reminds me of all the cool science behind food and nutrition that i got to learn in college.

    • @overgrownkudzu
      @overgrownkudzu 2 месяца назад

      this. ofc food is more than just fuel, but sometimes i need to remind/convince myself to eat when i don't want to, or stop stuffing myself with crap that'll make me feel terrible afterwards, and in both situations seeing food as fuel helps to just be pragmatic and get it done.
      that doesn't mean it can't be more in other situations

    I love this - food can be a love of chemistry, a love of art, a love of history, a lovee of culture - and a love language - it's the only art that engages all 5 senses and nourished those you share it with an has a precious impermanence that is fleeting in and of itself but lasting in those who experience the 5 senses when consuming - art, culture, love, history, and biochemistry that fuels life itself. I'm a "gingernese" hapa because my redd hair came from my Okinawan grandmother and would looooove to go to Japan and just be present in the rich culinary history - the history, proximity to the sea...I just got this much needed fuff of happiness seeing you experience this

    Food absolutely is more! But the gentle reminder to myself that food is fuel can be tremendously helpful. There are days where I don't feel like eating, stress tends to really mess with my appetite, so shifting focus away from the flavors and textures that I don't want to be dealing with, and over to the understanding that my body still needs something to run on, can really be the thing that gets me over that roadblock.

    I've been following for a while and just wanna say thank you for sharing your experience and all your stories. You don't know how much you're leaving the world a little bit better than when you found it. ♥
    I was severely underweight for all my life. Doctors told me for years, I needed to gain weight and I went into counseling and started weight lifting. One of the most mind-blowing advice I had gotten through this was learning to enjoy food for more than just fuel and learn not to obsessed over every micro nutrient, because it's unrealistic and it's not how the human brain was adapted and evolved. And it would be pointless to get every little calories and micro nutrient down if I was going to hate the experience and drop it after a few months. It should be a lifestyle not a fad.
    Once I got over that roadblock, eating become something that was nurturing for the soul as much as it was for fuel for my body.
    I still have days where my old habits creep up again but I've become more attuned to them and learned to better navigate them to make sure I get my dailies. Now I'm stronger and healthier than I ever was. Skinny /= healthy. Practice balance & living in the now.

As a plus size woman with a life that seemingly isn’t going well from many perspectives, it means a lot to me that someone who’s especially qualified to talk about this has finally said it. Being healthy is important but difficult, especially so for people with EDs. Food isn’t just for surviving. It’s a lot of things. Some foods have bad memories, good memories, feel better only eaten during certain times. It’s a whole multiverse to talk about out there. Especially for those kids with emotionally difficult parents food was their way to show love and care.

    I’m jealous of people who actually enjoy food. I don’t have an ed or set restrictions for myself, but I simply don’t care for food that much. Honestly, if I didn’t have to eat to survive, I probably wouldn’t do it

    I cried after listening to this. I have struggled all my life with ED mindset. Hearing I am "fat" all my life has ruined my relationship with food. Coming from a rich Indian culture we have more than just food, we have flavor, love from our ancestors and emotional connection with family when we consume. But none of that matters in this society. This is why I follow you, you bring love to your content.

    Food was one way I was able to show my young children, that I loved them and wanted them to be healthy, especially when we had such busy lives with school, sports and work (me). They have all grown with a healthy relationship to food and understand that food also nourishes our souls. I’ve just spent 2 days cooking with my eldest sons girlfriend and watching them both enjoy these meals makes my heart happy ♥️

    As someone who struggled with binge and over eating, viewing food as fuel is ultimately how I gave up junk food and sweets.
    I finally reached a healthy weight and stature thanks to that phrase. Like it can be sad to think why it’s so unfair that I couldn’t eat chocolate anymore bc my body can’t tolerate it (ibs) but in hindsight it’s something my body can survive without. So it’s not really a bad phrase in itself esp if you can utilize it to your benefit. (Still, it’s refreshing to hear this. Your vids always make me feel cozy :>)

    oh for sure. anxiety and adhd makes it very difficult for me to eat but learning foods from all over the world makes it so much better for me, both emotionally as nutritionally (getting more variety). its also a big thing in my relationship with nature since you connect with whats from each place and time of year - and so much more, really

    As someone with an ED I really had to reframe the idea of food is fuel throughout my life. Originally it was confusing because I loved cooking and eating with my family and it was important to me. Then it became a rule, food is fuel and fuel only so I should only eat as much as it takes to stay alive. Now that I’m trying to recover I’m trying to scrap it all together. Food is connection and love and not a cause for anxiety unless I let it be. Thank you for this video 🤍

    I understand. Even though my mom’s chicken soup doesn’t pack a lot of vegetables, it can curtail a bad day and heal a broken heart 💔.

    I've been getting recommended a lot of videos lately that involve people of different cultures, backgrounds, traditions, races, etc etc etc bonding over food. Food IS culture, and it's one of the few aspects of culture that can damn near immediately bring people together. Food is love.
