I bought a real NASCAR... to make a DRIFT CAR!

  • Yes, we bought a NASCAR. Why? Well, there is a pretty crazy story to this one. This actual car was raced in 2007 in the NASCAR cup series by Ricky Rudd and we found it abandoned in the UK! It might be the ultimate barn find and we are building this car to be a drift car for our Drift Games Invitational next week! Yes, we are idiots, we agree...

Nascar fan here here is some info as someone who got close to the show cars, and to the races in person. these should help you :) (info i know for the 19 years of me watching nascar XD)
    1) the flaps on the roof of the car was use to help keep the car on the ground as cars at the time were always lifting off the ground, that was added to Nascar to keep the cars on the ground during a crash. it was criticized a lot around the 2010s era for causing some crashes, but it is still used in Nascar till this day.
    2) all the tubes in the windows were not only used for radiators, but also to get air into the car as the cars get really hot. and most Nascar races last around 2-3 hours so it gets hot in the cars
3)Nascar do not have doors as the body is actually put on a tubular Chassis, the body of the car are usually removed by a massive pit crew and team after every weekend of the race, this
is how they would replace broken parts, work on the engine, paint and apply the livery, etc etc. Nascar still does it to this very day.
    4) the reason Nascars do not have working lights is because they use the lights from the track itself during night races, and most of their races are during the day
    5) the body of a Nascar is designed by the team to match their road going counterpart, here this car was made by ford in the 2007 season to match their famous ford fusion at the time. Nascar to this very day has the manufacture fabricate a body to make it resemble their road car (or trucks if its from the craftsman truck series
    6) nascars used to run 4 speed manual gearboxes, but as of the next gen cars, they run 5 geared gearboxes, since this is a 2007 chassic it would have ran a 4 speed manual gearbox, so that is that
    7) the steering wheel is detachable to help get out of the car in case of a crash since their is no doors, and the net is there to keep debris out of the cabin incase of a crash. again a nascar is mostly a rolling chassis with a fabricated body so there really isn't any "doors" on the car. nascar knows with the rough racing these cars get in they have to have bodies that can easily be replaceable since nascar races are nearly weekly. classic nascars (as far as i know,) used to be fully stock and had to get body repairs over a season.
    8) to get the wheels off you may need a powerful airgun as old cars like these used the lug system for tire removal, since 2022 next gen cars they have became single hubbed wheels.
    9) Nascars are normally powered by NA V8 engines, but when Forsberg built his, he had used a 2jz engine.
    .

If I understand it correctly, the roof flaps serve 2 purposes, both aero related. Remember the Merc from LeMans in 99 that just went flying.... thats positive air pressure that builds up, and causes lift, these flaps help release that pressure. The 2nd thing is in the event of a spin, they release all the pressure of being sideways and will act as an air brake. The aero of these cars is not meant to be sideways or backwards at their intended speeds.
Dont know more than that but the cage around the motor looks like it should fun to work with. I halfway expect you guys to just slap on different hubs and suspension and just keeping the top hats.... because 2 weeks is insanely short

  • @ryancrombie8670
    @ryancrombie8670 Месяц назад +1

that's going to be a graft to get that done in 2 weeks with the transmission tunnel and suspension etc but if you can pull it off it will be worth it, the flaps on the roof are to act as a air brake and stop it from taking it off and doing a cartwheel down the track whenever it spun out maybe not the best for going sideways

I sure hope someone told Dave that the gen5 stock car (not a nascar) was not symetrical. Not only were the bodies skewed but also the suspension mounting points. The wing on the back window is for side force in a corner. It was developed in a wind tunnel.

The sound of doubt in your voice saying you bought a nascar is crazy 😂

Imagine a Ford Fusion Nascar chassis with a Australian Ford Barra drivetrain and a Japanese inspired livery in Ireland.

I was trying to think outside the box and I think you could have given me 100 guesses and I wouldn’t have gone with nascar 😂 I’m looking forward to seeing the madness unfold in the videos leading up to the invitational event as you frantically work out how to sort this crazy idea out in time. Crazy you guys travelled to Brighton, literally 20 minutes from me.
Anyway, signing off on this comment looking forward to this ‘DG teaching an idiot how to drift’ series we are starting in the down time at the end of the season 🤝😂

Going to have to square the rear end of the chassis if it isn’t a NASCAR road racing chassis. They’re designed with rear steer in them and catwalk pretty aggressively to the right hand side

I would try my best to refab the rear "bumper". Its a fusion that looks like an old monte carlo in the rear, hideous and sticks out too far. A holdover from aero they knew well.

Good luck with the project, this would have originally been fitted with a Yates D3 motor and I would guess Martinsville gearing if still in it would possibly be 6.00 to 1 .
If you guys get in bother give me a shout at American Speed and Thunder 👍

Start watching Aaron Loseys vids from Lonestar Drift. He built a drift nascar a few years ago.
