- There's already some footage of me playing this song on The Internet (played it at Drumeo last year!), but it's one of my favorite 'Chapel songs to play live so I decided to record it again (mainly as an excuse to use my #Tama STAR 18" Floor Tom. LOL).
I hadn't played it in awhile (did rehearse it for a couple of days before tracking it, though) but my muscle memory served me well & it came back almost instantly. I'd never played this tune with an 18" in the mix (live with W.C. I've just been using the 14" / 16" floors) but figured this would be a good song to add some big ol' 18" accents in (& lemme tell ya, it sure IS! Lol !!!). I dunno ya'll... might have to keep this 18" in my setup & start using it live, too ;) !
Big shoutout to the ultimate homie Navene Koperweis for writing WICKED fun parts on 'The Valley' (Love ya doode!). I am eagerly awaiting the day that I can go back on tour & play this banger live again (god DANG I am over this not-touring crap). Mix was done by Declan White --- owner of Cusworth Drums in Melbourne, Australia. I got in touch with Declan after Nolly (Adam Getgood) told me about the custom snare he had made. I hit up Declan to see if he could do something similar for me (...which may indeed be in the works, but more on that another time!), & in short order we started nerd-ing out on all kinds of stuff (#NERDLYFE !!! Lol amirite).

Drums sounding great! Sound a bit more open than the starclassics maybe? I saw Yob (amazing) play in Glasgow a few years ago. Travis was paying a, presumably hired, Star kit. It was probably the best sounding kit I have ever heard live. It was just earth shakingly amazing. Sound guy was pretty handy too, which obviously helped.
I saw Yob a few years ago as well (I think with Monolord??) and was transfixed on the drummer the whole time. Never really got into them but watching their drummer live..... Dude was amazing. Such a hard hitter and crazy precise.

When a drum play through is more accurate than the one by the original composer.
I have a feeling Navene always likes a bit of improvisation over his own parts, whereas Alex is super methodical and plays as close as possibile to the studio version.
Both guys are so sick tho!

@@MirkoFustinoni Navene’s obvious ability is why I was disappointed. I don’t mind tasteful embellishments in a play through (David Diepold) but omitting key elements is annoying. Mind you Navene did use a larger kit recording for Whitechapel but how hard is it to borrow a couple of extra toms?
@@Virvum_Juggernaut I think it’s just cause he’s known for that setup (the one used in that video, and almost all of his drum play throughs ever, you know, 12 inch tom to the left of the hats and 14 inch floor off to the right?), but he’s, he could/should’ve used a bigger kit.
@@jamisonandrewmanhorvaththe1124 Yeah I dig his ‘Entheos’ playthroughs but because he lacked the toms for Whitechapel he messed with the arrangement to compensate and for me that doesn’t cut it. Different story if you improve on the original like a Rudinger or Diepold but he didn’t.
@@Virvum_Juggernaut yeah I agree. Navene is back to a 5 (maybe 6? I forget if he’s got a 14 inch tom on his left next to his hats) piece setup for the new Entheos stuff it looked like, when he posted the studio pictures. I wonder if and when he does some Meinl Cymbals Entheos play throughs, if he’ll go to his original ‘Orbinated’ setup. Also, I think I saw you on that recent diepold video, Solaris playthrough, talking about the Tama Star kit setup.

Absolutely! Pantera has been one of the main Whitechapel influences for years.🤘🏼
If you dig Pantera, check out Delta Empire’s channel. He covers heaps of Vinnie Paul’s work and he’s a session drummer so he’s as clean/tight/accurate as Alex.
