There are a million uses for the 2 steel rings. Another useful one for camping is you can use a blanket and two rings to create a hammock, by making a special "fold" at opposites corners of the blanket around the rings, then use some cordage to tie to trees etc.

Haha I remember that Les Stroud episode where he said "if you sweat you die". I agree fully, bullshit. I see a few youtubers still say this but then they'll tell you how badly they sweated hiking in somewhere in the cold. Yet they don't die lol. Those of us who spend a lot of time outside know that sweating is just a part of it. A better statement might be "if you manage your sweat very poorly and then make the ridiculous choice to stop moving completely you might die". Lol.

A short piece of aluminium or wire chain with a hook on one end allows you to utilise thicker branches if need be. Sling the chain around the 3 branches, pull tightish and splay the legs. Voila'.
Then carry a second "S"hook for suspending pots up or down over the fire on the chain.
Wrapped around a tree, a chain and hook can give rigid non stretching support to any structure.
Thanks for all your ideas Lars, i will add 2 rings plus hooks to the chain in the kit
    Stay safe out there
    Keep on keeping on

  • @BuckMckawtheotherone
    @BuckMckawtheotherone Год назад +9

Very good tip using pre-made rings with hooks. Thank you. I also use the Russian Army knotted rope, it is amazing to use for all sorts of things: clothesline, canoe paddle hanger, under cooking tarp tool storage, lamp holders, the list goes on and on. In the cold, if 'you sweat, you die' is a bit exaggerated, but, it brings home the concept to dress properly and allow wicking of sweat away from you, so you do not get a shiver and catch a cold. In a real survival situation, if stranded out for days with wet clothing, hypothermia can kill. So, it's not really bullshit, but a fair warning to dress properly.

The forest looks beautiful...you have some good snow now. These time savers and effort savers are just awesome. Up here in northeastern Ontario it never got below -18c yet this year and about 6" of snow on the ground so far. In contrast to last winter starting about mid October, and a very cold and long winter ending with 5' of total accumilation for the season....then rain almost every day for the whole summer, and never reaching 85f degrees...we need a reprieve from all of that crap!

    • @williamscott5640

@@frederickmoller yep. Winter set in here earlier than last. But we do get a reprieve from it with the chinooks every so often. Chinook is warm Pacific air coming up over the Rockies. Warms us up sometimes in my area. Cold now, Only supposed to last a few days and warm up a bit.

Morn, Lars! Good to see you in your natural habitat again.
Did you know you can make rings from birch-saplings also? Its really genius! Its called "vidjeband". You can make simple loops (good for up to 300kg), loop on a stick for carrying(Y-branch) , snowshoes, ski-bindings. You name it. A real gem from the norwegian old-timers.

I'm in central Tennessee, USA and we have some pine here but hardwoods dominate the landscape. Have you tried this with harder woods? We have tons of oak and hickory, cherry, several species of maple, lots of species but pine is a little harder to get my hands on. If you have any advice it would be appreciated greatly.

@Andy L I feel like you and I would get along well. I was out in the ice last winter with an overnight low of -12C and had to bail after hiking ~8km into a heavily trafficked "wilderness" that ended up being depleted of enough wood to keep me warm all night. Just trying to decrease my chances of a similar event. I typically will build a fire and scoot long (3+ meter) logs into it as the night goes on but I'm always looking for any means to reduce fire upkeep or keep me warmer. Stay well down there.

So i have a question?? In really cold, low humidity conditions and you are wearing breathable clothes ,do you get wet from sweat or does the moisture evaporate straight away. I do recall climbing in the mountains in winter wearing two thin layers of wool and sweat wasnt a problem.i was sweating cause ice was forming on my fleece back pack.
Most of my cold weather experience has been between 0 and mimus 5 butt this day in was in excess of minus ten and very dry. My water bottle was frozen solid by the first stop and a sandwedge would dry out before you had finished eating it.

I do get wet from sweating, but it dries off relatively fast. It's also very dry cold here. You can see the "sweat" on my watch cap. I pretty much dry out my long sleeve t shirts in an hour or so.
