    We almost had it put right this week, but the tyre fitter that comes to your house is off on sick leave until the 31st, off to find a garage then!

    Hi mate, thanks for this video. Would I pass the MOT in the UK with a 255-55r20 H/W speed factor instead of Y ? I m considering to put a run flat tyre. For sure in France is illegal.

    Need new tires for my 2008 L322 SC so I was interested in your choice. No offroading in mine though. I have a P38 for that but just bought an LR3 to replace it. No vehicle testing of any kind in British Columbia.

    We have the same issues in Belgium with the CT. We can however put bigger sizes than original on the van registered 4x4’s. What we tend to do is buy a second set of rims and we change them over just for the CT

    Just found you here Ben. Loving your vids. I was searching for General Grabber AT3 and Range Rover Sport. I saw the video where you had them fitted, and this one... Had to laugh. I live in Portugal and the IPO (MOT) is even hotter over here. They will not pass ANYTHING that has been added or modified, especially tyre sizes. I had to remove my daytime lights and window tints when I imported my 2005 RRS or they would not accept the vehicle. But all things considered those things are outweighed by the positives. Hope all is well with you and your wife.

      I think it’s a recent thing here in France. Previous tests nothing was mentioned about tyres that weren’t to Land Rovers spec.

  • @rward16384

    Thats crazy saying it can only be the same tyres, they dont restrict like this in the UK but I would say I would usually have my road tyres and an off road set when I had grabber 3s I would have gone with 19" if I could so you get the extra depth, my 5.0SC wont take 19s as the front callipers are massive.

    The Range Rover 5.0V8 Supercharged is limited to 140MPH, the speed warning on My one is set at 156MPH
    which means I would need a second set of wheels to do any proper off-roading because of the speed rating.

      My winter tyres for my previous L322 was on 19". It was the better option for fitting snow chains and they ran quite a bit smoother due to the taller sidewall. I'm contemplating selling my 22" summer wheels for my L405 and replace them with 20":s. First of all, the 22":s make it look like a ghetto car, and second, the way I use the car dictates more terrain oriented tyres. And as a bonus, the tyres are cheaper. But we'll see.

  • @TheBendalina
    @TheBendalina 2 года назад

    Very interesting video thank you.
    In the uk I got cheap steels with off road tyres for the winter! Maybe it wouldn’t pass a Mot in the uk???
    Does that mean it’s not road legal in though you have told insurance company? 🤔

    • @Bensgarage
      @Bensgarage  2 года назад

      It appears I’ve been running about with incorrect tyres for the last five years, so no I haven’t informed the insurance company. I’ve only looked at the door sticker for tyre pressures, and never paid much attention to the sizes. And up until recently (it would seem) neither did the CT testers.

  • @johnelbro127

    It is bloody ridiculous Spain is the same over tyres, I had the issued few year ago. Good luck. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

    • @Bensgarage
      @Bensgarage  2 года назад

      I wouldn't mind, but it's the inconsistency. Two years ago he passed it with the incorrect speed rating. And the car has passed all CT's since 2017, when the other tyres were fitted. Getting some CORRECT tyres fitted to some spare wheels tomorrow.

  • @rhkavli
    @rhkavli 2 года назад

    The load and speed rating comes from what the car was certified with. And those tyres are not available in that many variants. You won't be able to find a 255/50-20 with an H label (With the minimum load rating). And they will have a load rating of 109, unless they are XL.
    And when you go down in diameter and increase the height of the sidewall, the load rating goes up. So the 19" have a load rating of 111.
    Can't you go to another CT? --Here in Sweden, we can choose among several companies. I had one being picky about my caravan and failed it on pure bullshit. Took it to another one, and there it was no problem. (It was a side-marking light that had 3 diodes, where two were not lit up) The first one: You failed on the 2/3 rule. What rule, I asked? Minimum 2 out of 3 has to be lit. The second inspection said that they've never heard about a rule like that. Complete lottery.

    I know the problem. Have a 1983 Land Rover 110 CSW so not a series 3 (despite having some of the features - 2 piece doors with sliding windows) or the 1984/5 changes to single piece doors etc. Even the Land Rover 110 Parts catalogue covering vehicles up to August 1986 fail to show some of the parts for my car. My 2012 Range Rover Sport has 20 inch wheels (I'm the second owner having bought it at three years old from a main LR dealership in Preston, Lancashire to find the spare wheel is a 19 inch. Very frustrating.

    The CT tester are just office people, they do not have any mechanical knowledge in France, all they do is look at their book of rules and I am sure their brief is to get as many cars off the road as possible, the speed rating is a bit of a technicality as we are limited to 75 MPH anyway, the obvious answer is to borrow a set of wheels ,get it tested, then swop them back again, the CT is a total farce in France.

    • @Bensgarage

    Ben, I would be worried for you if your plan is to just pass CT and then change to ATs until the next CT. If you are running ATs on the road and God forbid get into an accident, I would worry that law enforcement or your insurance company might find fault with your tires and put the responsibility on you. That would also go for anyone that you might let borrow the RR.

    • @rhkavli
      @rhkavli 2 года назад +1

      I've never heard about that happening. Then all the pizza-cruisers with fat rimmed BMW's would default to no insurance. Reckless driving. Sure. Driving with tyres with the cord sticking out, yes. But one dimension up, that has nothing to do with road safety.

    • @jerrygreene7139
      @jerrygreene7139 2 года назад

      It’s the Speed Rating that is my concern. Maybe if the accident didn’t happen at high speeds then maybe it won’t matter, but why take the chance? In the US, honest tire stores won’t install tires that don’t meet all of the manufacturer specifications.

    • @rhkavli
      @rhkavli 2 года назад

      @@jerrygreene7139 Like Ben said, H speed rating is 210 km/h and this specific car is electronically limited to 200 km/h, so how they possibly could fail you on that parameter is beyond me. The Y is 300 km/h. A 100 km/h marginal. And there are even extra marginals for the labelled ratings. And unless there is a tyre explosion, the condition for overspeed on the tyre is not met.
      Apart from that: Yes. The society here in Europe is going the way of the lawyer-infected US. It's less use of brain and more use of book.

    • @Bensgarage
      @Bensgarage  2 года назад

      It’s all a bloody joke, car has been on 109 H tyres for the last five years. As fitted by a Land Rover garage in 2017. Never heard of insurance not paying for incorrect speed and load, but not keen on tyres with no tread.

  • @jamest5149

    Its the same here in Spain and strictly in forced. fact its the same in the UK but not strictly in forced BUT if you have an accident your insurance may not pay out. As an ex-MOT tester it was always the case of tyre correct tyre specs but just got over looked.
    Also don’t take the specific load and speed rating and try and make a conclusion based on your use or max speed or amount of load you carry…these are set by tyre manufacturers and car manufacturers together and once agreed there is no questioning the logic etc.
    I wanted some off road tyres for my range rover in Spain but as you said you cannot get any in the specified size and ratings so you are stuffed unless you want to pay a engineer to write a report and then you get the change in specifications of the new tyres added to the ITV document as an amendment for future use.
    This is a EU and UK law for decades, unfortunately you have just found out.
    My advice is to find out how much an engineer will charge you in France for the revision report. I wouldn’t run a ‘second set’ with the off road tyres on the road, if the police stop you and check (and they do!) you can be fined, have the car impounded and have no insurance 😮its not worth the risk… just use them around the field until legal.

    Hi mate. Just found your channel! Good work!! I had these tyres fitted last week in the UK, your video came up as recommended. Really sorry to hear of the problems you've had. I had to double check speed and load ratings as the grabbers differ from OEM spec... Not a problem with UK MOT. I know you won't want to hear it, but they are fab tyres. I really hope you get a solution that lets you keep the tyres and enjoy the RR off road. Best wishes to you and yours. Sub incoming! 🙂
