Why did they have to do anything with it. Just leave her alone. It was her graduation after all.

It'd be infuriating if it wasn't so typical...

It never fails to amaze me the amount of racism that is still shown to us. I live in Georgia USA and have experienced this my whole life. I'm 46. Hopefully behavior like this will be properly punished under the law. Until then, stay strong.

Settler colonialism isn't an event, it's a structure. (I liked your comment. Good statement.)

Thank you. I’d hope any grown person reading this would know their history. That said, I don’t go along with your brand of partisan speech, or any, for that matter. The structure is top-down economically, not racially based. The sooner you stop looking across at the people you’re pitted against, the sooner you’ll look up and see the puppet masters pulling the strings

I graduated wearing a Native American necklace and a Filipino flag scarf, to represent my heritage and family. My school had no problem. Because why should they? The ceremony is supposed to be a joyous time, to celebrate the students one last time. Why bother??
Also, what about the students not wearing their caps? Or that girl in the row over with the hair accessories? Isn't that "against the dress code"??

Makes me sad the public humiliation is also going to be forever with this girl. The person who did this to her should have to make a public apology to her on your channel so they can feel the humiliation like she did. What is wrong with being proud of her heritage, and why ruin a special day for something like this? Seems to me like it's something more 🤔 she will never get that walk of pride back, it's a once in a life time thing, no do over 😔 way to go. I think that woman needs reprimanded. I'm sorry this happened, praying for healing. ❤

It's a never ending fight to be yourself. What if she didn't have family or people to stand up for her? Glad she did. I like her beaded cap better myself. 😊

Look, how an Educator dresses on a graduation and downright racist.

While it’s good that they apologized the damage is still done. They did not need to do that in the first place. It was wrong, discriminating and racist. It certainly wasn’t anything offensive or vulgar that Genesis was trying to wear! 😡 It was part of her regalia and honoring her heritage! 🪶

Farmington is very racist town, I felt this when I use live and work there, this was in early 70's. The city should be sued.

Something similar happened where I lived and the school district caved.
Personally, while I don’t have an issue with expressing your culture, graduation is done a certain way and you are expected to be dressed a certain way, no ifs ands or buts. Just wear the gown and hat as directed for a few hours and then it’s over.

My school district tried to do it for graduation sashes given to seniors by the clubs. Parents shut down the school's nonsense about that. The graduation is for the kids let them have fun within reason.
Side note the school also searched us for hidden beach balls. They brought in extra security to do it and still people managed to get them in. My favorite memory was having a ball land in my lap and the School security guard who was always a jerk signaled me to give him the ball. I locked eyes and sent somewhere else in the crowd. I still remember the look of disappointment on his face but what was he going to do?

  • @bennally21

I think it’s important to remember she didn’t ask the school if it was ok. So that’s her fault not the schools
Since when did people approve of this kind of behavior

Decorating graduation caps is a thing. Personally, I think it's idiotic and takes away from the dignity of the event as the graduates try to out-compete previous years and the decorations get more and more obnoxious. If no one else decorated their cap then it sounds like the school addressed this issue and said it wasn't allowed. So if the girl said "to hell with the rules" and does what she wants, she gets zero sympathy from me. Expecting everyone to follow the rules doesn't make you "oppressed". The school shouldn't have apologized for that.

they apologized because they were wrong by allowing other students to decorate their hats and making her replace hers and not the others. She was singled out.
