Hey Ben, I just wanted to let you know me and my daughter love watching your videos together and she is determined to build her own guitar one day. I build my first guitar this summer - as documented on my channel - and thanks to this channel and others I managed to build my dream guitar without any prior experience. And it amazingly turned out great. It’s definitely not my last build.... I’m hooked. Thanks 👍🏼

Ben, hearing you about redesigning the depth stop for the fret slotting saw: how about a transparent depth stop ground such that looking through it from the top it serves as a magnifying glass? So when you start the cut, you get a magnified view of the line/mark..?

A minute and thirty seconds into the video I paused to type this. I was watching rather regularly when you made Nebula 1.0 and haven’t watched anything of yours in a good long while. I just came back and watched you make Shred (which was incredibly bold and honestly captivating) and now I’m watching you make this. I absolutely cannot wait to see how the rest of this goes!

  • @Erowens98

Another advantage of cutting slots after applying the radius, is especially if you're planing in the radius, you can quite easily get tear out on the slot with some of the more brittle exotic woods. Generally that tear out is minor enough to hide under the frets, but sometimes it just isn't.

    hi,
well, fanned frets , as comfortable as they are , are more likely to serve a tonal purpose . think of a bass with guitar scalelengh. it would work, but under quiet uncomfortable conditions , such as strings, so thick, they could be used to hang a bridge over a river. thought in the other directrion, it`ll tear your strings apart . but to get a more pronounced basssound and still have the light touch at the top strings , you would use fanned frets. the position of the parallel fret on the other hand is just for comfort alone.
    love your videos btw .
    greetings from germany

Dude, I don't want you to go to a corner and cry. It really doesn't matter if I like the guitars or not :). Watching you build them is always nice. Obviously I don't always agree with the design choices , but - honestly - that's not what it's about. This is about very good craftmanship, art, creative etc. And watching you build is simply great, because you do it so good. And the videos are also great work in itself. :). What I'm saying - art is what's inside you, not what others opinions are. :).

Hi Ben, a thought, can you maybe add longer scale lengths to the fret spacing ruler? I .e. do some with 26.5, 27, 27.5, 28 inch for people to do their own fan frets? Ad maybe some sort of adjustable fret slotting jig with a movable guide for the saw that locks into the fan positions? I think in the modern age, that would sell... Cheers!

For double-sided tape, try banner tape from a sign supply source. It is used to create hems around the edges of vinyl banners. Maybe go to a friendly sign-shop and ask for a piece to check out its qualities. I am in the US but I'm sure the same stuff is used internationally, and is nowhere near as expensive as 3M products.

I think the main reason people go for fanned frets is the different tension across the strings. You can keep the highest strings looser and easier to bend, while the low strings benefit from a longer scale length, higher tension.

Here's a follow-up to the segment of you using a standard ruler for marking fret spacing. Even if you're a metric user, do the process in Imperial with a good quality machinist ruler that has 1/64th markings and a conversion chart in 1/128th. It's miles ahead of using mm with decimals in terms of accuracy and only loses out to a specific fret spacing ruler by being the slightest but less accurate along with being slower and more tedious. That being said, if someone needed to buy an imperial ruler like that in the first place, they might as well spend a few extra bucks and buy the fret spacing ruler outright. It's so much easier. If all someone has lying around is an imperial machinist ruler, have a go at it because you'll still get good results.

but.. but.. then there wouldn't be the opportunity to joke about it :( Seriously though, I am going to look into my options, the worst mistake I regularly make is to forget to turn on one or two of them which messes up the balance and look of all shots filmed then. B

Great vid, love the instructional style! More please! Just a couple of points, not being proficient with hand planes especially on a fretboard, I’ve started to use a belt sander for the initial shaping and tidy up with a radius block. Seems to work fine for me! Also, I’ve discovered the masking tape and superglue trick won’t work with certain masking tapes. I had four attempts the other day with a well known tape brand that didn’t work. Changed the masking tape and it worked perfectly! Probably best just to buy both from Crimson?!

will you consider doing a richlite fingerboard on a future build? texas toast has done a couple videos on them using power tools but I'd very much like to see how you handle the material with hand tools, in particular fret cutting since they advise a wider kerf.

The reason for a fanned fretboard is for string tension that varies from string to string to allow thinner gauge strings for the same tuning.

Is the term "parallel fret" for the "chosen one" the right one ? I'd have called it the perpendicular fret, since it's the only one perpendicular to the center line of the fretboard ?
I was planning a similar sort of build, this series of videos come at the perfect time

@@CrimsonCustomGuitars no I do not believe I've ever seen you do any fretboard of that nature. But I understand it being a customer's guitar. Thanks for filming the series I enjoy your work, as well drawing inspiration for new ideas.

Did you mean perpendicular fret vice parallel fret, Ben? That is, a 90° angle to the fret board and the "center" of the fanned frets? Seems like that's what you meant. Always enjoy watching your builds. The wood looks gorgeous and I'm keen on seeing how it turns out. Cheers...

I've been wondering why the masking tape and superglue is supposed to be "better that double sided tape" - but if yinze right-pondians can't get decent double sided tape... Good show for finding a way!

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  4 года назад

it is partly that, but even the 'good' tape that people have sent me pales into insignificance when compared to this trick.. so so solid yet so easily reversible. B

  • @MilesMcNallyLuthierie

Yea there is double side tape available here but I still prefer the super glue method. No matter what tape I've used alot less cleanup with the super glue trick.
