    ABOUT ME
    Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this RUclips journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

    I wish I had watched this video before I took my first watercolor class! Supplies add up so quickly and when the teacher says just bring what you have, as a brand new beginner, I had nothing! So I learned through trial and error and spent much more than I needed to. I'm going to recommend this video to every new beginner watercolor artist. Thank you Margot for helping us find quality materials at a reasonable price and for your amazing videos that inspire me to keep coming back!

    Even if all you can afford is student grade tube paint, spend the extra money for good paper! When I switched to 100% cotton paper even my cheaper paints look gorgeous. I also got some nicer squirrel & synthetic blend brushes and that made a huge difference.

    We've been thinking a lot about art supplies lately, too! Such good advice about using the best supplies you can budget- making art is worth our time! We need to make the most of every minute with a brush in hand! We think people new to art can benefit the most from using high quality supplies, especially watercolor paper, which brings colors to their best advantage. Thanks for mentioning us on this video , and for offering this well-informed advice!

    For those who want to spend much less than 100 dollars: buying a set of split primaries (6 colors, a cool and warm version each of red, yellow and blue) is more budget friendly. Pans are fine, too, especially if you don't know (yet) for how long you will enjoy your new hobby. Student grade is fine, too, if you are not sure how much you will be painting. I recommend getting a Cotman set if 12 from Winsor and Newton, and the Van Gogh paints (there is a starter set of 12 colors, and another if 12+3 colors) are even better.
    Good paper matters more than good paint.
    You can use a white plate for mixing!

    Well done! Great tips all around. If shopping at Jackson's, I would go for (1) their own brand of watercolours (allegedly made for them by Sennelier), (2) their own brand of brushes (Raven Quills, Icon for synthetics) which are amazing and reasonably priced. As for paper, I would buy full sheets, to cut down at home. Jackson's offers the service of cutting the sheets down for you to your preferred size. They also offer packs of 1/4 loose sheets, cheaper than buying a block. 1/4 sheet is 11x15". You can get 4 decently sized pieces for the price of 1 sheet (around 8$) Loved your commentary along and all the tips.

    As a beginner I bought Arches, Stonehenge, Baohung, and a couple small spiral bound Artisto pads. I tried them all, and I actually really liked the reasonably priced Baohung quality. The Artisto were almost useless because they made painting so frustrating by soaking up all the water very fast. I thought I could use the less expensive paper for practice, but all I practiced was creating disasters. Good paper is worth it to learn techniques!
    I bought Daniel Smith paints, and they are so highly pigmented, I only need a tiny bit to paint with. They are more expensive than student paints, but I suspect the tubes will last twice as long. I tried to stick with single pigment colors, because they are easier to mix. I added some granulating earth colors to the split primary, because I want to paint nature subjects. I got Buff Titanium, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, and Yellow Ochre. (I also tossed in a very deep dark blue and a rich vivid violet because they are favorites, lol.)
    For brushes, I bought 2 round and a filbert Princeton Aqua Elite. I plan to buy an inexpensive mop or flat brush for wetting my paper or doing washes, because they don't require the precision for details. Other than that, I got artist masking tape, a kneadable eraser, a small spray bottle, some masking fluid, and dug around in a drawer for an old HB sketching pencil.
    The biggest mistake I made was buying an inexpensive plastic pallette. It stained the first time I used it, so it's hard to see what color I am mixing. Because the wells are attached, I can't move the paint easily to another pallette. So I bought a small porcelain flower shaped dish for mixing, and I love it. I just recently picked up a tin pallette that has a mixing area and holds many half-pans of paint too. It has the bonus feature of a lid I can shut every time my cat tries to step in my paint, lol.
    So far, this has been all I have needed, along with a couple recycled jars for water and some paper towels. I suspect it will be quite a long while before I need to buy anything more. In a nutshell, this video really did cover almost everything you need to get started. For anyone out there who has a smaller budget, buy good paper, one good round brush, a porcelain plate from the thrift store, and try to find a set of paint that comes in it's own pallette. There will be plenty of time to buy more brushes and such if it turns out to be a hobby you love. :)

    It was fun to watch what you would do with $100 budget for art supplies, I do know that I can make a hundred dollars go further. First thing, there are many other pro quality paints that are much more affordable such as Mijello, Rosa Gallery, Paul Rubens, and the quality is excellent, and I don’t think you really need a limited palette to learn about colour mixing, you can still have fun mixing colours when you have more choice. Second, my advice for anyone shopping for art supplies is ALWAYS buy them when they’re on sale. You’ll save so much. A couple of years ago I bought a 48 half pan set of Sennelier from Jackson’s for $150. It was a real bargain, now it costs more than twice that. So, always shop around and buy supplies only during sales. Your money will go much further if you do.

I just thought of one thing to show them how to use their brushes so they don't ruin them. I ruined I don't know how many brushes being to rough on them. I stopped them in the glass of water to wash them off. I ruined the points. Also lay your brush flat to dry. Me I just put them back into the holder when I was done. Wrong thing to do. Lololol 😊. I think beginners would love to know this.

    This was a great video for professional supplies w/$100 budget. Would love to see you do a $40-50 budget on student grade+ supplies. Unfortunately in our current times ( and past and future) not everybody has $100 to splurge on beginner supplies.
    Over the years as I’ve met people online and in person and shared my art with them, they’ve expressed an interest in art but not having a lot of money & not being sure where to get affordable supplies. Many haven’t done anything more than HB pencil drawings on printer paper because of budget restriction & believing they needed hundreds of dollars for supplies. In fact, I’ve watched many RUclips channels who share that professional supplies are a must, and I just don’t agree. I’ve even seen one RUclipsr claim supplies don’t matter, but constantly promote her hobby grade supplies she sells at professional prices 😂
    Over 25 years, I’ve used child, hobby, student, and professional grade supplies. I’ve found in watercolor that there are some hobby and student grade supplies that are good to use, especially as a beginner who won’t be selling their work any time soon. Even the basic crayola watercolor set is better than nothing!!!
    And I just wanted to comment on Canson XL and Strathmore. I’m not sure if you have used Strathmore lately, but I have. And Strathmore is terrible. It’s kinda paintable and better than nothing, but when I’ve tried to use it I have a hard time getting my paints to blend on it and it feels like there is too much sizing…like I’m painting on jello. I’d recommend Canson XL over Strathmore (all series) any/every day! In fact, along with Arches, Baohong, and Bee, I use Canson XL on daily basis for experimentation and practice! There are different techniques to using hobby, student, and professional…but they don’t vary much.

      Temu is a grt8 resource for all these supplies, including Arches, the Chinese paper in the light olive green pad, as well as paints (oils, acrylics. watercolors, gouache, inks), palettes, and brushes. BTW: I've learned a lot about the art supplies because of shopping at Temu especially the international paper and sketchbook paper weight and sizes. Takes time, but it's been worth it. I've always received paper products that were good quality.

    This was a fun shopping experience. It shows a realistic spend on good quality art supplies. However, I just realized an artist also needs a pencil, eraser (Tombow mono for precision work and one of those squishy ones), and a sharpener (if using a wooden pencil). I also like to have a ruler and stencil with multiple sized circles. Oh yeah and masking tape and washi tape. My list is way over $100! May be scissors too since a large sheet of paper can be cut into small sheets. 😊

    Hello. Jim from Madrid (Spain).
    I started my watercolor journey last Autumn 2022 and I actually almost quit before even starting because of the complexity on choosing the right products and materials at an affordable price.
    I didn't quit and now I'm full blown into watercolor and Gouache (besides drawing with different materials, etc, which is more of my artistic background).
    A video like this would have saved me an immense amount of hours of R&D just to understand what to start with without breaking the bank!
    I agree with you that paper (I believe it's the most important material to actually learn efficiently) it has to be 300gsm and 100% cotton and Arches, etc. Are great papers (I started with cellulose paper and it was awful!!
    I also agree that artist grade paint and a basic mixed palette is the way to go when learning, so you can actually understand colour and learn how to mix, but it is important to get single pigment paint (for better control in your mixes) and as transparent as possible to learn shading, blending and other techniques (wet on wet, etc.).
    Luckily, since I live in Spain (an expat from NYC) Escoda is definitely my go-to-brand since it is cheaper than other international brands because they are made in Spain and we avoid international shipping + import/export taxes, etc... But a good few quality synthetic brushes are also necessary when learning and your choice is 2 rounds, a flat and filbert is perfect. I would include a mop or quill too, for good washes (the Escoda Ultimo series is great, for example).
    So... Thank you!!!! For Real!!!! I am sure this video will help a LOT of people starting in Watercolor and I just wish I would have been able to see it 6 months ago!!!!
    Cheers from Madrid and you have a NEW subscriber!!!!

      Hi Jaime and thank you for your thoughtfully written comment! I agree with everything you mentioned and yes to single pigment paints! I'm passionate about paints and pigments but it's so very intimidating to newbies as it can easily sound like you're going on a spaceship to mars with all the pigment numbers, lightfastness ratings, staining and technical language 🤣 🚀
      Welcome to the channel and ps. I love your country! I went to Andalusia a few years ago and it's literally one of my favorite places on earth. I need to go back. Madrid and Barcelona next time (and maybe I can fill my suitcase with Escoda brushes while I'm there) 😝

    I would get the a gallo dotcard (45 dollars), their dots are large and highly pigmented and you have a wide selection of colors so you won’t be bothered as much with mixing as a beginner (when color mixing produces muddy colors this can be really frustrating). You can pull the paint dot from the paper as long as it is dried, put it upside down on a plastic or porcelain surface, on the backside there will be a thin layer of paper stuck to the paint. Now add a drop of water (with a brush) and with a pair of tweezers you can remove the rest of the paper and voila: a drop of pure paint.
    You can get half pans of the paints you used the most later, maybe from a less expensive brand.
    For brushes I would chose a middle sized one and a very fine one/ miniature brush, not soft ones but those with more straight tips which are not as expensive as typical watercolor brushes, because as a beginner you will probably make your brushes suffer a lot :) these are around 15 dollars.
    Paper: Arches 300 gsm, cotton (12 pages for 20 Dollars) or the middle sized etchr sketchbook (cold pressed, cotton, 230 gsm, around 25 dollars).
    Plus I would highly recommend some masking fluid. For a beginner a masking pen for around 6 Dollars should be sufficient. However be aware that these get clogged easily.

    Amazon often has special buys on W/N and Sennelier sets, both pan and tube, in different sizes. The QOR set of 12 (split primary palette plus a few neutrals) is under $70 at most major art stores and that is really all anyone would need. They also have smaller sets. Steve Mitchell's M Graham set (8 tubes) at Wet Paint is around $100. Paper=Michaels and similar stores often have sales. Palette=TJ Max and other stores have many porcelain dishes and platters for under $10

    Margot, well done - for tackling the task and for having so much fun and excitement! I had the same in 2021, when researching supplies for my first art group here in France!
    Arches (Arches as in Harsh or Marsh) paper is mega expensive across Europe, even though it is French, Arches also uses animal gelatine for their sizing - it comes from the by-product of rabbit bones, rabbit being a commonly eaten meat here.
    I understand that Arches is also very attractive to our pets, because of the smell of the gelatin, especially when wet. When I sampled it, I didn't like it, because apart from the price (less of an issue back then), it was very soft and absorbant in comparison with other papers. A very good alternative for the Arches, and more affordable here, is Saunders Waterford - a fantastic work horse of a paper, and readily available.
    Daniel Smith paint is not only hard to find, but is also mega expensive. I noticed that you only got it within your budget because it, was 45% off at Blick. The brush was a good offer, too.
    For paint, I went with Winsor and Newton Professional, rather than a French brand, simply because it's made here in France, is readily available, cheaper than Schmincke, easier to use than the honey-based Sennelier for outdoor work. (I also prefer that honey, which is produced by bees - an endangered species which has to work extremely hard to make it, and the price is very high these days, was available for humans, instead of being used in paint!)
    I've also used W&N since I began (though I have played with other brands), so it made sense to go with that. I can't fathom why some ArtTubers find it hard to re-wet, as we (students and I) have never had a problem with that, and it has been a staple for all levels of artist, from amateur to Royal Academicians for almost 200 years, but maybe it's because there are so many other brands around now?
    I read your comment about W&N masking fluid, and smiled. I think it's all down to our very individual sense of smell. As others have said, I'd have added three grades of graphite pencil (2, 4, and 6B, as most will have an HB somewhere around their home), a putty rubber and a scribbler (sketchbook) for experimenting with the essential techniques of composition, values, light and shade, thumbnails, etc. as well as being great fun to play in.
    You did a fantastic job Margot, and a very well put-together video! made it very watchable! Thank you! 😊

    Thanks for putting so much work into this excellent video. Personally, I didn't enjoy mixing colors from a limited set as a beginner so I would recommend Van Gogh watercolor. They have a bigger selection of single pigment paints than Cotman, and a lot of transparent shades. There are some interesting convenience mixes and single pigment that you often don't see in student brands: Titanium Buff, Naples Yellow Red (pinkish shell flesh tone), PY129, PV55 and even an opaque white. The vibrancy is far superior to other student brands. I feel that some colors are as good as professional brands and I can barely see the difference. For me, their price/ratio is the best.

      Mind telling me more about those Van Goghs? Saw they have some kits with 12-15 color. Was also looking at W&N Cotman kits, and a cheaper MeiLiang one at AliE.
      I'm currently looking for a set with a good price-to-quality ratio that I can take with me outside to do some urban sketching. I'll take any advice I can get since I don't have much experience with watercolors.

    • @barefacedquestions
      @barefacedquestions 10 месяцев назад

      @@izzyg8316 I only have individual half-pans by Van Gogh, but their 12-color palette seems to be well-selected. I like how clean and vibrant the colors are. I've heard of many professional artists use Van Gogh brand for practice and sketching. I would say they are between student and pro grade.
      I'd advise anyone new to watercolor to not buy from brands from dollar stores (my painful experience)you have no information about.
      Many artists advise you to learn to mix your own colors to have more creative control, but that usually only works for good-quality, single pigment paints. Where I live, Van Gogh is the best price-to-quality ratio. If you decide to go with student brands, please consider having more than 12 colors because student watercolor paints often result in muddy, unclean mix.
      Happy painting and sketching.

    Real close to what I used to recommend for beginners (and intermediates who didn’t want quality). I recommended only one brush…Princeton Neptune Quill #6. Just checked the price…wow! Much higher today! I read comments…and about the D.Smith Essentials…it is so much easier to learn to mix with the split primary palette. It is SO tempting to buy pre-mixed colors. Imagine a year or so down the road and you have picked up a butt-load of tubes you just ‘liked” or others have recommended. By the time you have dug around for that perfect tube, I’ll have already mixed mine and used it. There are exceptions, of course!
    Student grades of paint use more fillers and cheaper pigment. You’ll go through twice as much trying to get vibrant color. A little tidbit…Artist’s quality tubes have their pigment mixture on the tube. Single pigment colors are best to learn mixing, and you’ll have color unity throughout.
    I just found Margot and am sure she will explain “stuff” when she feels her students are ready!

    Plastic palettes are bad for causing paint mixes to bead up. You can improve it by using a magic eraser, such as Mr. Clean. It's a melamine foam, if people in some parts of the world don't get that brand. Or if you can't get that, perhaps very lightly scrubbing the plastic with household scouring powder might work.

    Really excellent video, and your little gifs made me chuckle along the way! 😂....I might be tempted to add a putty rubber as well as you can't beat them for gently lifting unwanted pencil marks in the preliminary sketch. As watercolour paper is so easy to damage with an ordinary eraser. I think I'd prioritise that over the palette as a white plate will do or even a white tile! I've seen one famous professional artist using two white tiles in the lid of her paint box. It's a toss up as using tubes you do need I guess some sort of palette to keep what you squeeze out dust free. So I'd say rather than your next take out coffee buy a putty rubber and a decent softish pencil. I like HB or 2B. I never use the Hs sometimes suggested as they can mark the paper and be hard to see, the whole purpose of the sketch in my mind 😅, I just go really light with a softer pencil. I began my watercolour journey with a winsor and newton professional bijou box for £25 ( rare as hens teeth now) and a couple of brushes. And a well made watercolour journal so I think it worked out about the same as you've spent as my journal was made with Saunders Waterford and was the priciest item.

I know you love this company but I think it's more their student grade collection.. Thank you 🥰

    • @amozinshade484
      @amozinshade484 8 месяцев назад +1

      If you paint in layers and glazes Cotman works well enough, however if your style is to do a one pass with the brush and expecting vibrant colours the professional would be better.

    • @jvisser4848
      @jvisser4848 Месяц назад

      You can start with Cotman in pans. When a color runs out, you can buy a new tube (either Cotman again or a higher quality) and then refill the empty pan with that. This way, you can gradually upgrade to better paints. Plus, you get to know which colors you use a lot, and then you can focus on buying only colors that you actually use.
      In the long run, tubes are more cost effective.
      But while you are experimenting and getting to know still how much you enjoy painting, a simple student grade set is fine, IMHO.

    Well I am a bit worried. I hate to be serious on here but I have totally used ceramic kitchen stuff for paint and then washed and ate off it. There is still some in my cupboard and probably even more at my moms house. Should I be concerned? I mean I knew that accidently drinking my paint water was bad but I never thought about ceramic leeching toxins. What about glass. Is it the same? I also wash my brushes in the same sink as I clean my dishes. Is that terrible. I am going down a rabbit hole here folks...😬

    • @deliciouscolours

      Ceramic is not porous after being glazed. If yours is glazed and you washed the paint right off without any staining you're good.

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas Год назад +2

      @@deliciouscolours You have it spot on. We wouldn't be able to buy cadmiums and cobalts under US or EU law if they were so toxic that using a plate they'd been on was a danger. And who'd use an unglazed piece of pottery / china for mixing artist paints of any sort?
      I have a far, far bigger issue: - seeing artists' cats and small dogs muzzling around the art supplies on the desk. For small animals, it really is dangerous, but again, it's not the plate (though I never gave my cats their food on anything other than their designated dishes!).
      It isn't only about the water - that is still a problem, but possibly the least problem, unless they drank the whole jarful. as these pigments, undisturbed, sink to the bottom anyway. They just need to get a splodge of paint on their paws / fur.
      Quite why artists let their pets up on tables and worktops in the first place is something that really puzzles me! Mine were trained gently but firmly from the time they arrived to know exactly where they weren't welcome to go (very few places!), and they were very happy and very loving wee beasties.
      So let's not worry about plates. Let's just use some common sense, and where our kitties are concerned, how about showing them some real love by training them properly, just as one trains a toddler, and therefore keeping them safe... 😊
