Instead of blocks for swatches, I like to make little apples with shadow and stems. This seems to immediately make the difference in colors stand out to me.
So many artists skip this step of learning some basic theory, unfortunately. They might think science is boring, but you prouve it is fun and so usefull !😂
Thank you for this video. As a professional artist and teacher i taught pigment basics. Most students just drifted off into dreamland and thought i was being my normal overly obsessive self who was just too fussy. But for me learning about pigments was so exciting and made such a difference in purchasing paints and mixing colors. I just love this subject. 🎨
I love this video. You have the most creative analogies that are humorous and helps the information stick. I am looking forward to learning more about toxicity. Thank you so much.
Margot, this was the best!you are entertaining and very creative, and I can't wait to see your channel grow more and more because honestly, you are a gem! and people need to know about your incredible channel!
Now I'm growing into learning the codes, instead of just messing around. Like learning music... You first learn basic rhythm by playing games.. then when you start to get serious, you learn notes. Then when you're really serious, you start studying the circle of fifths... That's where I'm going. I want to know these technical things... One day, I want to become a painter of light... That's my big lofty goal!!!
Wow, I really enjoyed learning all these aspects about watercolor... although I've used watercolor both as a hobby and professionally for years, it's mainly been as a "naive user," just using paints I know I like for various reasons! This has been a wonderful "class" of getting to know the details behind their make-up. Thanks so much for a thorough and entertaining description! I look forward to checking out your other videos on the topic!
Been binging your videos for a few weeks and today’s is the first I’ve interacted with. You’ve found a way to tie two hobbies together in a fun and unique way!! Great job on diving deep to learn and really understand your audience and delivering super valuable and relatable content ❤
Best ever explanation of watercolor pigments, well done 👏 🎉 I followed you through the whole video!! But if it had been my first day of watercolor I might feel like ok good to know but who cares let's paint something...lol! 😊 Now I can't get enough of learning all the color info. I'm working on finding my favorite sap green formula. So far I like viridian/phthalo green, cad yellow/gamboage, and cad red. I actually don't have the exact pigment number as these are from the Mei liang pretty excellent palette, which is Paul rubens student grade watercolor set but I'm working on figuring it out. Thanks for sharing. This was a great wealth of information!
Absolutely the best ever!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So much valuable information in such a friendly inviting and humorous manner! You deserve a RUclips Streamy! I’m in total awe! 🥰😍💚 Love setting this in the kitchen, btw!
Thank you so much @scoobydoozie65 It was so much fun to film and I’m so happy that you enjoyed it as much as you did! And thank you also for the gift. That means a lot 🥺🙏
I would argue any color you love. Even though you can mix something similar you may run out and need to mix more. Or you mix too much and waste paint. Why not just buy the colors you love. You can still play with mixing. I recently curated a single pigment palette for when I feel like playing with mixing. You can have it all! ☺️
Hey Margo, thank you! I’m a beginner and I love your well thought out and sometimes ridiculously detailed explanations. It’s exactly what I need to understand what’s happening on my paper. Teaching oneself can be overwhelming and often confusing. The way you put it makes it so much clearer! Last but not least: I love your humour and editing style!
I sooo enjoyed this 🤩 Margot, you are a gem 💎 I’ve been really taking my time to explore the properties of my paints and have delved deep into it all, and it feels like alchemy! And it just gets more interesting! Can’t wait for your upcoming videos 🥰
Nice shots from the oven! Thanks for the pigment/properties lesson, Margot. Two pigment wishes: that payne's gray wasn't staining and rose madder had a better lightfast rating!
This was amazing! I wish I would have had the opportunity to watch this 3 years ago, when I started with watercolour. Gosh, I paid so much money for paint I didn’t understand, but thought I would need…. But as this all is an ongoing process and as I needed to know what subject matter I would like to paint (yay, even that matters when putting together a palette, nothing I knew) I think it was okay like it was. I made SO many mistakes. But I learned a lot along the way. Now I know my paints. I have a full book with swatches and all the pigment information beside, plus glazing and lifting. And this was so time consuming, but so rewarding. Recommend that to everyone. And definitely this video would have helped me out a lot in my beginnings! So nice. Entertaining and full of information. Loved it, thank you!
Margot, thank you so much for this explanation. I can tell that you put a lot of work and thought into producing this and I want you to know that I will watch anything else that you produce on this topic. Okay, to be honest, I will watch anything else you produce, but especially will look forward to more about this.
This was absolutely brilliant, informative, and humorous. You crack me up. Excellent analogy carry through that made a complex subject enjoyable. What a lot of work.
Such a great video! I was several years into watercolors before I started learning about my paints. It completely changed my process - for the better. I look forward to seeing your future videos on watercolor recipes. I love to mix grays from royal blue & raw umber and peachy colors from lemon yellow & quin magenta.
Well this was just so much fun! Thank you for being the weird one and sharing your lovely deep informative useful weirdness with us. So happy to be on this journey, cooking adventure, with you.
Never thought I'd get hungry while watching a watercolour video, but there's a first for everything I suppose! This was so helpful tho, you explained each point/topic really nicely!
Brilliant you are wonderful, love you and all your teachings. I dont know what I would do if it weren't for you. This was so much fun and informative. Thank you💕
Potters pink and Napthol is brilliant! No idea why I hadn't thought of that ages ago. Do you have any other pigment mixing hacks like that? I live for them! My favorite mix is PB60 and PY150. I love pigment recipes, and your videos! ♥
For me, learning the codes helped me understand why when mixing some brands comes out one way and another brand mixing a different to a different shade, or muddy colors because of the way that the different pigments work together (particularly if you see the white pigment in there) First vid of yours I've watched, greatly enjoyable! ❤
I'm a new subscriber and I thank you for this informative video! I've been painting in watercolor every chance I get for 2 years and I'm still very hit and miss with results. I think the chemistry is an integral part of the process that I've missed. I enjoy your style and your videos are always light & pretty. According to the comments I'm in the minority, but to be honest I almost tuned out at the beginning with so much analogy - it's cute but my time for my hobby/obsession is so limited that I almost missed a great lesson. Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge! I'll be looking forward to the upcoming videos ❣
thank you for teaching me what those letters and numbers mean on my paint tubes, I was thinking when seeing these on my paint...what on earth is this lol. Yes Im a beginner and am fast learning that some of my favourite colours are fugitive ;( you got me good too haha, i truly thought i was going to learn some secret way to make paint on my stove! Good informative vid as well as amusing. btw I love your ballerina paintings they actually remind me of my gymnastic yrs
This video was fantastic! You covered so much information that could be considered boring and showed us how important these things are in an ingenious way. I’m saving this video. And I agree with others, I’ve been binge watching your content since discovering you!
This is fascinating information! I really enjoy your vlogs. How about more info on mixing paint colors. A discussion on color bias, how to determine it for each color, and it’s relationship to mixing would be educational. 🧑🏻🎨
learning pigments of our paints is very important to help you find that color you love so much in a brand that doesn't always use the common name for that color you want. it saves lots of money especially when your buying tubes. the same is true in learning which pigments use dye & those which lift easily, idk about you all but wasting money on paint i don't want or don't even like is not my thing so it's well worth pushing myself to learn these things. tfs! have a wonderful life!
Amazing video, Margo! I was trying to ignore the fact that I need to know the details about pigments, so your timing is perfect! Thanx for another great video and thnx for making it interesting…your’re so funny!😆
Margot what a fantastic video! I learned so much about the paint I’ve been using for so many years. I can honestly say, none of my former watercolor instructors taught this. Thank you for the deep dive 😊
Definitely a great job with helping me figure out how to read the the paint information. I love how you presented the materials. I am taking more interest in figuring all of this stuff out to become a better artist. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Gorgeous kitchen & what is your casserole? 😂❤
I love learning all about pigments and their properties. Thank you for this wonderfully informative video (and the encouragement to keep learning at the end). Much appreciated 💙💜
Your videos always make my day 🖤 can't wait to see this! I love mixing colors and seeing how they merge together! 🖤 Edit: I wish my kitchen was as clean as yours 😂
How are you so adorable?! A noob returning after a brief visit to watercolor land and loved this video. Already I can tell I'm on a fast track to becoming a pigment nerd. I was a makeup artist in my first life and love color & chemistry. I'll be returning to your video often as my understanding deepens. Thank you for being you.
This was fun and informative! I struggle to get nice transparency in my watercolors. Couldn't understand why. Now I know. I gravitate toward cad colors. Who knew they're more opaque?! Lol So much to learn. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a way that makes us watch. PS I'm waiting for the video where you show us how the paints "dance" across the page. Literally 😉
love you margo, love your channel, your humour, your talent, your amazing content and your professionalism. enjoying watching your sub count creeping toward 30k. can’t wait till you reach it and inevitably soar beyond ✈️ power to you i’ll be watching 💕
Such a cool video!! I love all the cooking things and the change of scenery. I’ve been wanting to learn more about pigment numbers and dive deeper into what makes the paint do it’s thing. Thank you for sharing all this info. I’m SO EXCITED to see more videos like this so I can learn more!
Margot, this was absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for explaining “the mysteries of pigment” in an understandable way. I think this might be my favorite of all your videos so far. Two thumbs up! 👍👍
3 seconds in and I'm already laughing. It's like watching a favourite programme on TV, and Margot is a star. As far as colours - I go through phases, but right now I'm loving blush, peach and coral tones..mostly involving mixes with permanent rose.
I've been searching for this info. I'm new in w.c world and I've been wanting to know what these words on my paints actually mean. Thank you so much please keep pigment info videos coming.
Wow what a fantastic video! I learned a lot. You reminded me of Alton Brown’s tv show-you learnhistory and how things are put together in a very fun way. Please continue making these types of videos. I am just starting out in watercolor!
I am so impressed with this video and with your presentation! You make learning this somewhat dry information fun with your amazing sense of humor and clarity. Thank you for choosing to share your talents with us.
I wish the lessons in school would have been as interesting and educational plus entertaining - thank you very much for making learning a pleasurable experience 😍
Thank you! I’ve heard most of these words but didn’t always understand what they meant. I now need to go look at all my tubes of paint and make some better swatch cards. VERY helpful!
Margo thank you so very very much. You do not know how much time I have spent trying to find this information. Great job. When is the next one? I do follow Oto but she hasn't posted anything for a long time I sure hope she is alright.
You're pure pleasure to watch. Learning and laughing all in one video. You are truly loved 🩷🖌xx
Thank you dear Penny 🥰
Instead of blocks for swatches, I like to make little apples with shadow and stems. This seems to immediately make the difference in colors stand out to me.

Yay! Happy it came across the way I was hoping! Thank you!!
Great info so creatively presented. Every new watercolorist should watch this :)

PV86 in the trunk of my car... 🤣 Watch out for that white van, folks!
Easiest way to kidnap an artist…🤣

Wow the cooking analogy!
I'm new to arts. And when I started learning to mix colors, it felt so much like cooking haha!
Margo…this was the best video ever 🎉 So fun!

I loooove nerding out over art supplies and paint pigments 😂. This was sooo good and easy to digest. No pun intended 😜
Loved this funny, fabulous way of presenting a subject I’ve struggled to understand…bravo Margot 👏🥰
So glad I could be of help! ❤️
Wow. Everything makes sense now. LOVE your combo of humor, helpful analogies and puns, and informative graphic examples! A+ for pedagogy!

Oh I forgot to mention! That reference website by Dr. Kano is very cool!
You are such a great teacher! I love your sense of humor.

I just love your videos. It shows you put a lot of thought into it. You can make a boring subject (chemistry) interesting. Thank you ❤

This was so entertaining while being super informative, too.
Brilliantly simple explanation of pigments. Now, please put us out of our misery... which casserole did you make?
What a great explanation! Thank you for taking the time to really break down everything so thoroughly ❤
Margot, this was absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for explaining “the mysteries of pigment” in an understandable way. I think this might be my favorite of all your videos so far. Two thumbs up! 👍👍

Thanks!
Ah, comme d'habitude, you nailed it! Explications PR ;-)
Merci ma chère Renée 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for this fun explanation of all things pigment. It made a couple things "way" clearer for me.
haha i loved this, the stove & camera shots remind me of Alton brown too!
Exquisite! Amazing colors! Your art truly tells the story of your heart!
Love the detail of this video! Thank you 😊
Great video ❤ Looking forward to those upcoming recipes!
Margo thank you so very very much. You do not know how much time I have spent trying to find this information. Great job. When is the next one? I do follow Oto but she hasn't posted anything for a long time I sure hope she is alright.

I gotta tell you, you are such a joy!
Great breakdown! This will help so many people! 🙏🏻🥰
So informative. Thank you! I passed this along to my classmates in my watercolor class.
This was such a fun watch - must have taken ages to get all your footage together lol! Well done!
