Pocket Carry for CCW: Does it Make Sense?

  • Today we're talking about another method of concealed carry that isn't as popular as it used to be: Pocket Carry. But is pocket carry still a viable method for CCW? Are there advantages to it over appendix carry?

I have a nelson pocket holster I bought from a forum member for an LCP2. It has 2 wings on it instead of one unlike the cheeps that come with many guns. It anchors in the pocket when drawing upwards. Perfect for its job. Sometimes I'm just taking out some trash or grabbing mail so slipping a small gun in the pocket is simple and easy.

I am going to start pocket carrying simply because of comfort. I'm tired of trying to get an iwb holster to work for me. I've spent at least $200 on holsters and none of them are comfortable with my canik tp9sf elite. The pistol rubs, pokes and I just hate that feeling of something against my side. I think pocket carry with a small revolver would be ideal.

    • @rushthezeppelin

Same with a Canik MC9. Either I print at AIWB or my butt gets poked carrying strong side. Just bought the new bodyguard 2.0 today for pocket/ankle (I think ankle is the only way I could possibly carry at the climbing gym on body).

I have pocket-carried exclusively for about 20 years. My main priority is to have a gun with me, and living in Alabama, the only consideration in clothing is pants pockets with sufficient room for the gun AND HOLSTER. I don't have to worry about covering a gun as when attached to the waistband or belt. On the rare occasions it gets really cold, I have a leather coat with reach-through slots in the pockets. Until I recently picked up a Sig P365 with safety, I carried small DAO pistols or J-frames.

Before sitting in my car, I pull the holster up in my pocket till the lip of the holster matches the edge of the pocket cut. Then when I sit down the butt of the pistol is exposed and makes for an easy presentation while seated. The buckle of the seatbelts hides it from casual view but doesn't impede it being from being drawn.

As a gun owner of a 9 mm and a 380, I first owned the 9MM but bought the 380 because I noticed some days I wasn't taking the 9Mm because I didn't wanna appendix carry all day long and be uncomfortable.
When I feel like the nine is too much, especially in the summertime when you're wearing less close, I'm always carrying the 380 in my pocket.
I would rather carry the 9MM. But I would rather have a 380 because I left 9MM at home.
I would also rather carry a 22 around my ankle than having nothing.
The point is: Get a gun and carry the way that you'll carry everyday.
I would rather have my daughter have her hand gun in her purse where's it's not exactly easy to access, but I would rather have her have a small 22 in her purse than nothing.

From what I've read and watched a ton of "experts" say to only use a holster for your firearm- "it is too danderous to carry without a holster" - I always thought a ton of guns have so much protection built in these days that they might just be trying to sell you something. I really like the idea of pocket carry- I gopt my CC license but have yet to do it- just trying to figure things out and get confidence--- and would like to be halfway comfortable while doing it.

The common concealed carrier believes that everything is going to be to their advantage. The most likely scenario is the criminal will blind side you or grab you from behind. Very seldom will a violent criminal approach someone from the front unless they're being deceitful, like trying to get you to help them and catch you off guard and then attack. The main objective, my main objective, is to be armed and I don't frequent obvious trouble places. I won't even drive through a bad neighborhood even if it's a shortcut to my destination.

I think a pocket gun on weak side and a better gun in waistband is best choice for ccw. Hand on pocket gun if something looks sketchy, and better gun if you have draw time. In bigger city’s I carry a 19 with red dot, and a 642 weak side pocket. I switch the glock for another snubby on hip in my city (very low threat here).
Oh and I make sure any clothes I buy works with pocket carry and aiwb. Also I carry aiwb, and weak side pocket

That's how I've carried for years. However, I've recently begun transitioning to tucked-in shirts after losing weight and slimming down some.
My new carry practice has been a primary gun in strong-side pocket (left for me.) It's usually a Kel-Tec PF9 I've owned since 2010 or a Ruger LCP-MAX. A spare magazine rides in a discreet knife pouch weak side OWB.
In addition, a North American Arms .22LR mini revolver rides in my jeans watch pocket with the butt tuned to the left (again, my strong side) and covered by my belt-worn cell phone holster.

I guess it just all depends on where you frequent and the social dynamics of your area. Most people do not need a semiautomatic handgun with 2 extra magazines but they feel comfortable carrying that. I personally live in and frequent rural areas where the people are older and generally calm. We do go to a larger town now and then but I still do not see a need for more than 5 rounds. The most likely scenario I will find myself in is a meth head approaching me for some cash. The main thing I do is avoid any type of conflict. Unless the person approaches me with anger or they look like trouble I'm generally going to either run or try to get to my vehicle so that I can leave quickly.
