I think the person recording this does a very good job.
Forget gold and silver im investing in Borax. Every time this guy makes a knife I can cover one year of my kids college tuition. A
You can make just about anything _sharp,_ but making a high quality knife means that it will *stay sharp* while you use it.
We have very high quality mono-steels these days, but Damascus is a demonstration of skill and craftsmanship.
Beautiful work, I'd be proud to make something half as good.
Yeah, all you really need is a belt grinder, some way to heat treat, and a slab of good steal. Still very much doubt it would be sharper than my Hitachi Shirogami kitchen knives, those are thin and hard, 8k+ whetstones actually make a difference. Though for a lot of food items having a rougher 4k grit gives a better bite when starting the cut.
Now, a nice damascus scribing knife would be nice to have.
this is not Damascus Steel, we do not know how it was formed.
@@badatheist9948 Stop being pedantic, language changes. Everyone calls pattern welded "Damascus". Crucible steel is generally known as "Wootz" nowadays, and while there are a number of alternative methods to produce such steel, the process has been fairly well empirically worked out.
It is a shame that this is not damascus steel, a high quality knife or sharp.
While I appreciate that the gentleman is undoubtedly a skilled metal worker, the blade design is terrible.
Blowing the dust off the welding helmet. Boss
very beautiful knife, a real piece of art..... thanks for taking the time to film this and post it
Excellent work my friend. Great content keep up the good work. 👍
i learned to forge using a coal forge i love seeing some one use one with such skill and control i know how easy it is to over cook and rune a billet lone seeing talent at work very beautiful blade sir
Thumbs up for helping protect your eyes, nice work
Is that a Stanko pneumatic forging hammer?
Excellent work, my friend!!!
That's bad ass bro you are a true Craftsman it's the perfect knife for the kitchen or in your boot , make me one lol
amazing video #greatskills
What is the white powder and what does it do ?
what is the white power and why is it used ?
Hi my friend, what is the white powder you use? Thanks
Hi. Borax
@@seyranmanafli4055 thanks
What is this powder being sprinkled on the red hot iron lump?
Whats that powder for?
It's like Flux it helps to stop oxygen from getting in and causing inclusions and what is know as cold shuts. It helps to keep the steal clean and make a good weld when forging.
What is the powder that he spreaded over the heated iron? It was powdered several times between the processes he repeated heating and hammering.
Borax. It minimizes oxidation.
Borax
It's a Flux to help in the welding of the steal by keeping it clean and keeping out oxygen that can cause inclusions and cold shuts.
walking OSHA violation...I love this guy
What is that white powder?
Whats the powder you put on it ?
If I were to do this, the only thing I would make is a trip to the hospital.
Well you could always try and keep trying till you get it right, you’ll never learn anything if you don’t try
If I had a dollar for every OSHA violation I've seen in this guy's videos I could buy RUclips and have enough cash left over to buy us all lunch.
I *love* this channel. 😂😂
Thanks dude, I'll have a turkey club with a side of fries. 🫴 😁
No safety glasses.
What's the green powder?
What does adding the powder do for the steel?
good question. i don't know myself
Its flux. promotes better adhesion between the layers
@@carnage77 thank you
it prevents oxidation wich causes scales on the surface of the steel and prevents the metal from welding
Technical that is pattern forging. Damascus or wootz steel is made in a sealed retort with carbon (charcoal).
I have this discussion all the time
folded metals are laminated
Damascus is iron folded over 14 times so the carbon from the hammer blows migrate into the iron to form steel , how steel was discovered first
Wouldn't the glue on the Brad strips b a problem for the forging process?
You'd think that, but nah. Surprisingly simple problem to fix.
Burns of almost instantly in the forge and the white flux powder cleans the metal as it heats up.
What's the white powder
what oil do you use
Way better process ,don’t you have an upright sander ?
What is this white powder?

Flux, it is for removing impurities.

How do we find out where we can go to either buy a knife or order a knife?
What is this white powder??is this a base or an acid??
Borax
For something like thst I would defenatelly use canister to keep everything intact , might even add some high carbon powder into canister to fill all the gaps
👏👏
Watch the power hammer is very satisfying for some reason
Somebody knows what is the powder the master smith pours on the metal when its red hot
Borax
What is the name of the white powder?
Borax
Well it's not " real Damascus Steel" as Damascus Steel is actually a crucible steel. It's pattern welding. Very hard work and sometimes tricky to get right so quite a laudable achievement nonetheless.
Don't confuse Wootz with Damascus. Wootz is the crucible steel which when folded, makes Damascus . 👍
Excuse me Sir is possible one knife..if you sell.
I'm from Italy.
Oque é esse pó branco coloca cima do aço ????
for the borax to be effective, the steel must be sunny yellow, apparently the fire is not powerful enough
It looks awesome but isn't a single piece of steel better? If this is done perfectly it is the same as a solid piece I guess but it seems like introducing a lot more risk into the project.
As big and heavy it is if you miss cutting them you could beat them to death 😂

I love your videos, but please wear safety glasses using a grinder. I've had metal slivers in my eye twice, and it's not fun.
We all keep power hammers and surface grinders in our garage. The drill press is in the kitchen. And I weld on the toilet....
Whaat?! Welding with a mask now?!!! Unsubbing! LOL
For the love of Pete, where some safety glasses…
Buy some safety glasses 🫥
This dude uses flux like an 80's girl used hair spray.
Try some eye and ear protection old fella, you'll thank me in 20 years. Nice work but.🥰
Needs a handle
Real Damascus was folded not cut into pieces and forged back, you are funny 😅😅
Actually there are many ways to make patterned steel, all valid. "Real" damascus is made from wootz steel, if you want to get really precise.
