- Our “Why I Vote” campaign gives artists a chance to share personal opinions on the key issues shaping the 2016 Presidential Election. Along the way, they encourage young people, a traditionally under-represented demographic at the polls, to participate in the political process that impacts us all. From Kesha to T.I. to American Authors, each episode focuses on a particular subject, including immigration, LGBTQ rights, mass incarceration, and education opportunities. We’re hoping to galvanize first-time voters interested in shaping their own future.
This hot-button issue of gun regulation really hits home for James Shelley and Matt Sanchez of American Authors. Growing up in Texas and Tallahassee respectively, both have first-hand experience in what happens when deadly weapons are far too readily available.
Both James and Shelley have brothers who have served time for shooting someone, and in our latest episode of “Why I Vote” they examine the circumstances and explain their opinions on the need for comprehensive gun reform. Neither makes excuses for their brother’s violent actions, and both believe that stronger availability laws will quell the amount of gun-related incidents the country is suffering with. “If making it harder to get a gun starts saving lives, than that’s important to me,” says James.
Previous episodes of “Why I Vote” featured Vic Mensa sharing his personal experiences with police brutality, T.I. telling his own story of growing up in Atlanta at the beginning of the government’s “War on Drugs,” and Kesha discussing LGBT rights.
Upcoming episodes of “Why I Vote” will premiere in the coming weeks, and will feature John Legend, Becky G, and Rise Against.

please stop speaking like it's the guns that killed or robbed people. your siblings are not bad people, but they made a poor judgment call. they are not safe to be around the public.
so, imagine you were a law biding person who followed the law 100%. with modern gun control, you probably wouldn't have a gun. But the law breaking jerk over there got a gun illegally and is not robbing your house. Call the cops? takes to long. Hit him in melee? He has a gun. Of course back-round checks should be made, but last I checked those already exist. If the dude at the show didn't do the checks, it was his fault. punish him, not us.

You guys can give up your guns all you want.
Yes, there should be better back round checking, but that does not mean that guns should be banned in its entirety.Also, its not the gun that kills someone, its the person. A gun does not come with ammo in it when you buy it. So that means someone has to pick up the gun, load it themselves and fire. a gun does not function without the trigger being pulled. There are safeties for a reason, and if you are properly trained (Which you should be before you decide to buy a gun), and you take care of your gun, i will not 'Accidentally' fire. Guns are not the cause of death to shootings. They are but only means to get to that end with the person pulling the trigger being the cause. Also, a question: Lets say we live in a country where guns ARE banned, what criminal is going to give a D**n? they are criminals, they break the law anyway. Whats one more going to do? Another question. who defends America? the ARMED forces. who protects the president? the secret service. guess what they have? GUNS. banning guns would put our country at a military disadvantage and gun violence as well as hypocritical if the secret service/armed forces continued use of said guns. would still be a thing, with the common man/woman having no gun to defend themselves with in the event a criminal decides to rob/kill the people i said house. Gun violence is an issue of peoples low morals, not the guns themselves. Yes, better back round checks. No, don't ban guns. That is my word.

Asa Palmer you said gun violence is an issue of people's low morals but a lot of these mass shootings or bombings in and outside of America are religiously motivated. Islam is a major issue and it is not compatible with western culture. Back round checks would only affect those who have a criminal Back round. Plus illegal gun trade wouldn't be affected so criminals could still get guns.
Robert McCoy improper religious motivation. Many people take it too far past the extremes. Where do you see in a well known and recognized religion that says, " oh go kill these people.', bomb this place and shoot up that place"? Radical people take their religion too far down its sad. In part some people are not shown the difference between safe and extreme measures.
Asa Palmer the thing is that in Islam commands that we would consider radical or extreme are explicitly stated in Islamic text.
Even if the majority don't agree with the violent verses it is still an issue because any individual who reads it could follow its actions, which makes it dangerous.
These so called radical or extreme groups like Isis are wanting to go back to the traditional way Islam was practiced because it made them a strong and powerful nation.
