The famous Apollo Theater at left at 4:42!! I'm amazed at Harlem. Nice, wide streets and laid-back feel, unlike other parts of NYC. No slums, and clean, love the architecture. Very intriguing. You asked, so here goes: Do Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga. Tennessee's 4 major cities are all remarkable in their own way!
I miss the Old Harlem... When it was all black... Lots of People always outside on the stoops, corners, sitting on cars,, loud music everywhere, kids playing free outside... It was never dull or corny back then
Thanks for posting, I visited Harlem ( which derives from the Dutch city Haarlem) in June 2016, same period . At 16:00 on left hand the yellow Malcolm Shabazz Mosque on 116th street in Little Senegal. Nice, very nice to see .
12:30 shows where I stayed on the right on 116th. The area was nice and didn't seem as bad it's usually portrayed in TV and movies. Then again, I was only there for about a week.
Que beleza de cidade, as ruas não tem buracos e nem lixo espalhados como aqui no Rio de janeiro. Parabéns aos governantes e ao povo americano. Continuem assim!
to do the same distance in the city in my country would last much much longer. That comes because our traffic lights are not synchronized and go on at random. On our way there is one European light, the one where we were waiting, and waiting and waiting for nothing. Riding slowly in the left lane obstructing the traffic in the back is very common. Passing the traffic to the right is a traffic offence. People crossing do that in slow motion. A real joy.
Some traffic lights in the US have sensors that won't turn on, if nobody is waiting at the traffic. This happens for left turns. Also, if there is a lot of traffic passing through, the light will last longer, but if there is few traffic coming, the light will not last as long. Sometimes it works well.
The problem in my country is that people in charge haven't got a clue of how to organize fluent traffic. They are always talking about dynamic traffic policies and in fact nothing moves from early in the morning. Then they say there are too much cars. But how are we gonna progress if government is willing, and likely, to set us all on bikes. Even airplanes can't move as should because of all kind of irrational reasons. The Dutch truckers sued our government because their trucks crossing our country stand still. At hazardous places like schools the speed limits are kept in tact during weekends and in vacations. We have really stupid people organizing our traffic. I could give you a hundred examples of what is done here to obstruct smooth traffic. I was in New York and I saw it runs fluent all day and all night. Everyday on the highway I say to myself here stands the Belgian economy, ie. rows and rows of trucks and cars blocked in the middle of the day. A reason for this mess is that people in charge never had to hurry in their life. If you have a boss behind your back who wants you to show some results than you are driving in a hell. Road works last for YEARS. This is ridiculous.
i have watched a ton of NYC videos and a couple of things amaze me. first, the j-walkers! man either these people are fearless or they have a death wish, LOL ! second the guys on the bicycles routinely blow through the red lights! again, fearless or a death wish !
That's how it goes here but that's nothing, You should see the west side of 34th street in Midtown Manhattan. Everyone is crossing right into the traffic and it becomes a game of chicken, either you gonna stop or the taxi is gonna run you over but some people keep walking inches from the bumper lol
Which parts of Manhattan are kind of sketchy or dangerous to be in as a tourist? Is Harlem one of those? It looks quite nice and friendly in daytime though I must say.
Manhattan in general is relatively safe everywhere. Of course, it's a huge metropolitan city so naturally keep your guard up and always watch for any weird characters, but in reality most of the not so friendly areas are outside of Manhattan; Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens mainly.
Looks alot cleaner and more secure than alot of 90s movies portrait it. I guess alot of work went into it to make it more beautiful/safer. Just a dumb european comment.
Being a map lover, I had already located it rather accurately on Google maps. In my 42 years of driving, with about 1 million km. I am a sort of walking GPS, long before those gadgets were around. I have been to NYC twice in my time, generally Central Manhattan, but never had enough time to visit Harlem. One club I would have liked to visit when it existed was The Corso E86th and 3rd. but that was many years ago now. Unfortunately I never got the chance. At the time I had relatives in Northern NJ, but they are all deceased now, although they did leave a son whom I only met once. I also have one more relative in another state, but she is not young either. "Salted with Salsa. but now too old to dance.
From what I see and know (I used to have relatives who lived in Northern NJ) Staten Island ias a LONG way from Harlem! Also when you look at Google maps, that bears it out as well! Was Joshua thinkling to pull a prank because I don't live in NYC? (Guffaw!)
R E, yeah the northern part of Manhattan (where Harlem is) doesn't have as many taller skyscrapers, although it is still urban by American standards and does have lots of tall apartment complexes. Did you know the parents of that kid in Northern NJ well? Do you think the son knows what his parents did when he was a baby? Would he even care? You probably had birthday parties with him and the son doesn't even know or care.
The Bloomberg administration wanted to rezone Harlem and start building skyscrapers, but a lot of people protested it. Their plan was to make 125th Street look like Times Square.

Some of them looked like they'd escaped from a lunatic asylum. This was under the Bush Senior administration. The year after, with Clinton in charge, the streets were mostly clean as a whistle. To this day I wonder how this was done so swiftly.

New York is the nicest city on Earth, my favorites are Paris, NYC, Moscow, Torontograd (for its intense skyline), and New Orleans.

21:00 - 21:20 - some of those buildings look like that they've been there since around the 1910s or earlier, I can tell by the style
Nicely kept classic architecture!
Most of nyc are all old buildings. 90% are Pre 1950s.
Thanks so much for all of your videos!!!
Dame I miss N.Y.
Jason Bula me too... Harlem NY shakes every visitor’s soul deeply and I miss it so much
Jason Bula, "Dame" I miss N.Y.? Were you there in the 1930s when all the women were still being called dames?
Not sure how I went from watching an episode of 'The Jeffersons' to this, but thanks for the ride anyway! 😄👌

It was pretty bad from the 1970s through the early 1990s like many areas of NYC were. Luckily, most areas are looking good now!
I've spent a considerable time around 116th Street, and the further west you go, the better it gets. Not what most people imagine.
