- In this video - Classic Mopar A-body or B-body subframe and drivetrain removal from underneath the car.
It's been a few months now since Dylan's 1974 Dodge Dart Sport rolled into the shop. I for one have no idea where all of this time is going. I should probably be evaluated by a medical professional if that trend continues. In any case, it's time to make some headway on this awesome build. The first step to installing a bunch of new parts (like a 408 stroker Magnum engine, a TKX five speed manual transmission, and a Dana 60 rear axle) is to remove the old parts, so on today's episode, I remove the entire drivetrain and front suspension sub-assembly from the car, just the way the factory installed it (but in reverse.)
Thanks for bringing us the other k-frame engine removal method, I did like the engine roll out with the drums rolling along on the floor like a medieval chariot ! Always like me some DDG videos !
So many people give the late A bodies no love. What a shame there is a lot to love. Electronic Ignition, Big bolt pattern,OD manual trans, no leaky vent window, some have lightweight body panels.
There kinda ugly. Plastic interior parts. 10 years ago I wouldn’t want one. I’d take one now a days
Fun times! I had a 74 dart sport 318 auto when I was 17.
Good job brother and entertaining as usual. Gotta love your humor, anyone who doesn't is square. Thanks again.
“Where did you get your sense of humor? It’s bizarre…” - a commenter
“I think it was something to do with the way I was reared as a boy.” - me
Did a slant 6 engine replacement on a 1979 4 door Volare after the original blew. Got a used engine for $150 at the junkyard, ran it until a drunk driver made the rear end shorter. Took a weekend to do the swap with no lift and a rented hoist.
Great job Jamie I enjoyed watching that. I am about to do the same thing with my 67 barracuda. I’m going from a 360 to a 383 stroke to a 431. And I am going to remove and replace my engine the same way. Thanks for seeing how it’s done.
Awesome! Watch your exhaust on the big block going back in. If you’re running headers you will likely have to install drivetrain without, then raise engine off of K to install them. Header fitment is bad enough with a small block… good luck!
What a great idea 💡 Jamie !!
Dropping the entire engine/transmission/K frame & suspension out the bottom
That overhead crane was
Very helpful
I didn't see any OSHA violations
What so ever 😬
And no . I don't watch 40 year old reruns while wrenching 🔧
Oh yeah , we date 📅 mark our batteries 🔋 too

I have worked on exactly one car from ca in my life and it was an engine swap for a reman. I have NEVER been ale to crack a bolt loose then take it off with my fingers untill that car. 11 lincoln navigator and even though it was pain to work on just no rust anywhere was a god send. If it was a local car we would have broken off every other bolt.
Im jelly of southern mechanics.
Alright Wednesday video !!!! Way wicked awesome !!!!
Wow. Great project. I’m jealous of your workshop space. He he. My little shop is tiny, but mine. I just like to dream.
408 magnum, TKX, dana 60?!?! That is down right fancy parts for you! Hell yea brotha Jaimie! I'm really looking forward to this!! And yes California is the best state.
Oh it’s crazy nuts. It’s going to be awesome. Much more than I had originally envisioned.
Even though I'm a Chevy guy, I love your videos and always look forward to the next one! Cheers, Mike
Thank you!
That's a super solid car, should be a great build!@@DeadDodgeGarage
I was having withdrawals!!! And BOOM 🤯!! THANK YOU BROTHER 👍🏻✌🏻🎶🎵🎶🎵
I gotta say that was something else. Great job Dude!
You had Angela nervous as hell and yelling at you with this one lol! "Jesus Jamie, be friggin' careful!". If she had only seen what I did to get the not a Dodge up on the stands I made...
😅 it’s fiiiine…
@@DeadDodgeGarage Exactly!! I saw nothing sketchy or dangerous whatsoever. Women.
First time I have seen your torsion bar removal clamp. Cool!
I don’t have to break it out very often. Haha.
Those torsion bars and control arm bolts were simply amazing, I've never seen anything come apart like that in my life....
I'm definitely going to try to get my next project car from California. I wonder if the cars that were/near the ocean are still in that nice of condition. I'm also noticing that they seem to even be a little cheaper to buy from California too, but maybe that's just me.
Anyways, good luck on this Duster project, if everything goes ok it might be, dare I say, (gulp) fun?
Oh it’s definitely going to be “fun” 😅
I had a 74 Dart Sport that came from California and it was the same color. Mine never had the trim piece that went down both sides, otherwise a twin to the one I had. Mine was also disc brakes with big bolts pattern, also had sway bars. For a mid 70's muscle car mine road pretty nice and cornered surprisingly pretty well. I also v8 swapped it in the same manor.
It was such a great body style, I just wish they could have come up with a better grille/headlight package, it was just so lackluster compared to their other cars.
She's going to be a nice one!
That'll be a big improvement with the drivetrain. A turbo setup would be really cool.
Yeah David Letterman "top 10 reasons" were about the best ....good A-body content and thanks
Thanks for the video! This is going to be a sweet build. I like to see you take on big projects like this and can't wait to see the next videos on this build! BTW, I have a degree in graphic design so if you ever want to update the DDG logo, I would love to take a stab at it with no charge.
Got my fix of DDG! Thanks Jamie!
Awesome video! I listen to RUclips when I’m working a lot
200th 👍🏻. Great way to drop the engine, nice!
This is the way I removed the 440 from my 72 Dart and installed a 360.
Like Jamie, I too have a lift in my garage. Made the job very easy.
There was an old mopar magazine article talking about removing the drive train from a mopar and still leaving it mobile. They made four simple wheel assemblies out of wheelbarrow wheels, flat steel, and pipe. The front wheel assemblies were designed like a tall caster that bolted to the bumper mounts. The rear ones were made more straight up and down and bolted to the front spring hanger mounts after removing the rear axle. By mounting these rear wheel assemblies first, this made dropping the k member so much easier because the center of gravity was so much closer to the pivot of these caster assemblies. It was also safer because these casters were firmly attached to the car. You didn't have to worry about the car slipping off jack stands. After the k member was off, the front casters were attached and now you had a body securely attached to mobile stands! I wish I could remember the magazine and the article better but that article has to be a least 20 years old by now. Maybe someone else has a better memory or a better idea? Just a thought anyways.
Nice. We use a custom crossmember / leg setup on big casters at Rocket. I plan to build one of my own, as it would be hugely useful.
I've never had much luck with 6 cylinders (all makes) and don't get me started on 4 cylinders, come to think about it there have been some 8's that didn't last either, seems there might be a pattern to this. Good job Jamie, Maybe I should block the wheels, nah that's only safety!
Great timing again Jamie! First of all, I wish I could say that "Skip your meds Monday" was a huge success, but it was not. What the hell was I thinking?! There's not many people who think like me. I couldn't participate myself, because I don't take any meds. Come to find out that my crazy neighbor skipped his meds, which prompted him to try to shoot me off my roof with his BB gun! Secondly, A lot of people think I should be heavily medicated!
Haaaahaha. That checks out… I thought you were going to get off the roof.
I'm off it now. However, I still have to go up there occasionally to blow off the leaves, but that is not what I was doing up there lately. From now on I will only do roof maintenance when he is not home.@@DeadDodgeGarage
This going to be a great build. Hopefully you are able to get to it very soon. I really want to see you do the subframe connectors.
Yeah! I’m excited for it. I won’t be doing those until it’s basically together and sitting on the wheels again, so that will be a while.
Hey, you got back to this one, cool! Dropping everything out from the bottom is definitely the way to go if you are rebuilding everything anyway. Everything is so much easier to work on when it's out of the car.
Looks like it will be an enjoyable project and fun car to drive! I hope I didn't just jinx it for you! I also hope that there is a brand new set of "RAIN" tires somewhere on the shelf full of parts.
Thanks Jamie. I think I’m gonna try this on the old E-body when the time comes
Another amazing job...On the GROUND!! 😂😂
RIVETING ACTION! Thank you Jamie!
Gotta move out to washington and work with you, you have all the fun.😊 . Had to disinfect myself, put a 502 in a boat yesterday, ugh.😢
That’s going to be a sweet little driver
I tought you didn't like magnum swap from your last experience ?
I was thinking of doing it in my 75' Valiant 4 doors sedan.
I really like your videos. Like any Moparian who looks at your stuff.
When I look at your cars condition, I hate winter snow and Calcium they put on streets that makes us swears when the floors or frames are rusted out after few years. We can drive our classic cars from November to April.
What? No, Magnum is great. It’s the Hemi swap I’m not big on. This one will be carbureted, but I also have an EFI Magnum swap coming up.
Thats Ok, i have the ability to do it myself. Great videos!
Brake line meet Victorinox! Love it. Seems that I was seeing an orphaned slant six for sale on Marketplace or Craigslist every few weeks because another A body got a V8 swap. I'm hoping you can find the time to do the turbo slant 6 project or even just a 4 barrel carb upgrade. It would be great to see what a slant 6 can do without being held back by a holley1 barrel
I definitely agree. I need to get my four barrel manifold ported, and get the exhaust manifold built. There is so much to do…
I'm planning on doing what you just did on my '74 Duster when I put it back together again. I hope to build a K-Frame dolly for it though. I guess something similar to the one that US Car Tool sells.
Thank you 😊
I bought an engine crane a long time ago when Harbor Freight had it on sale but I hope to use it as a body lift while I drop the powertrain the Mopar way. Not pulling it out the front like those other makes. Though I guess I'll need a wheeled platform like yours too...
Yes the wheeled cart thing is very important.
Good work.
I had the same A body bolt pattern argument, except I won by pointing at my 76 Valiant.
Huh, I read somewhere it was gone for '76. But yeah, I lost a $10 bet I've still never paid up on. One doesn't forget something like that.
@@DeadDodgeGarage One thing about Mopar, there's always an exception, LOL
westport wa.state here sir.
Nice informative video.
Easy-Off will make that transmission shine like a new penny. Get the stuff in the yellow can though, not the hippie-friendly blue can.
Very badass❤ gonna fly
Dart Sport!!
Yahhhhh a '74 Golden Fawn Dodge Dart Sport gonna be a wolf in sheeps clothing. I have a '74 Duster....same color!
You're the first person I've seen identify the color correctly. Gj.
I'm in the northeast, worked on a California car once, it was like cheating, break a bolt loose and spin it off with your fingers. You can lift the body up with an engine hoist and lifting straps (chains scratch).
Yes, I should've gone out to the truck and grabbed a strap instead of the chain. Either way, it'll be fine.
Dammit Jim the dilithium crystals are almost depleted - I’m only a doctor Jim, not a magician!
Think of it this way, the overhead chain hoist is a lot safer than using dollar store ratchet straps tied to the rafters to lift up a body... not that I would know anything about trying that, heh...
Sounds like something I would do… there might be a couple pieces of strategically placed lumber up in the rafters for some reason 🤔
Safety 3rd!
At best!
I think you need more current in your garage electrical system, the lights sure do dim a BUNCH when you operate that lift!
Yes I noticed that. She pulls some juice apparently.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Ha!! reminds me of my old ham shack when I first installed the 2kW transmitter. Key the mic and the lights go BLOOP for a moment.
That was A-Ok!!!
This is Dylan's Dod Sport.
😅 I’ll have to amend the playlist and video titles to reflect that accurately.
@DeadDodgeGarage This took me two reads to get it, but I do now. You have my blessings.
👍
Just wondering if you wud be up to swapping the front suspension on my 94 dodge van. I mentioned it to you the other day
Man… I don’t know that I want to deal with that one.
"Safety Third!" 😂
Safety some time!
@@DeadDodgeGarage Safety Maybe?!? 😄
Couldn’t think of anything clavier to say… but this still counts as a comment.🤔
😅
Shit you made that look easy
I’ve watched a ton of your videos and they are great. What is the deal with the mail trucks? Do you have some kind of contract with the USPS? I wonder how you actually make money haha
Yes, I have a USPS service contract. Haha. Funny enough, though, of all of my 3 1/2 jobs, it’s the one I make the least from most months. RUclips is #1 and working at the restoration shop is #2. I also still do side jobs for people. I’m a busy boy.
@@DeadDodgeGarage that’s awesome, I hope you make millions on RUclips. I’ve already learned a lot. I’m way older than you but never did any of this type of stuff. I have a classic mopar and based on your videos, I’ve bought and used a timing light and vacuum gauge and fixed mopar stuff! Thanks!
Looks like a ton of work! Do you charge by the hour, job or how expensive clothes the guy in the car is wearing (including watch, jewelry, wallet (if fat), ect ect….).
If I counted every hour on a job like this… well, I could retire early. I kind of eyeball it on a per job basis, essentially. I try to come up with a number that is fair for everybody. But I am not cheap by any means.
That mail truck was a 1988! Ask me how I know😂😂😂😂
You’re *so* proud of yourself right now 🤣
@@DeadDodgeGarage😂😂😂
The front drums are finned. Were they all? When did they start finning them?
The late 10” drums are. I’m assuming that started in ‘73? But I don’t actually know
@@DeadDodgeGarage
👍
So now I get it, you repair postal service vehicles for income. Cool! Nothing wrong with Government Jobs Right!
One of three main sources of income, to say nothing of the individual jobs I do for regular people. I’m all over the place. Haha. Honestly I’m only still doing them because no one else will.
Can you explain to me why the most reliable engine ever conceived always seems to be blown up, leaking oil and/or sounds like someone poured nuts down the intake? Din’t get me wrong, I love my slant, but the reliable thing seems like the engine equivalent of “He/she has such a nice personality”.
Yeah… they have this legendary folk hero status that I have found to not really be consistent with reality. I’ve had some good ones. I’ve also had several broken ones.
Jamie, what kind of hoist motor is that?
The really old kind. Haha. I don’t know what brand it is or anything. It came with the shop. I know it’s rated for 500 pounds but can lift a bit more than that if the stars align correctly.
That's an awesome tool. It made short work of the project.
A two post lift is cheaper than a burial.
Yes I’m on the hunt for a second one.
I think your crane should be on a different circuit breaker
Agreed. Half of my LED lights are run off of wall plugs on the same circuit, that is the reason for the dimming.
can I come build a slant 6 with you?
Oh, well, maybe!
It's ok.They will get back together.Sometimes a relationship needs room to grow.Said all the 80s feel good Hollywood garbage.
I have a ranger. It's a 3.0. I need a 4.0
Unfortunately I need to install this one in the broken Ranger in my yard. Really need to get on that, for the parking space almost as much as the money.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I bet
440's fit in Rangers, coworker built one, your fuel economy may suffer, though
I Had a 1988 Ford Ranger it had the 2.6 liter engine. This was in 1995 had a 3 inch body lift and a put a 6 inch suspension lift on it. Had 33 in tires. 2 wheel drive . Here in San Diego. Still here . My 1967 Dodge Dart is original and unrestored. Bought off the daughter. Dad died no rust. 👍
@@Daniel-fd3wp Both of those sound nice.
That 440 swapped Ranger was sold locally, builder retired & moved away.
It's just you
73 on A-bodies had awful front end styling. Such a shame.
I don’t mind the 73-4s, in either the Dodge or Plymouth camp. I realize that I am in the minority there - especially for the pokey Dodge nose. But I’ve had a lot of times with a couple of those and they grew on me. 75-6… well, I don’t feel the same.
It didn't look 'that' easy to me. Those cars were a marvel of engineered economy.
You can throw all those expensive parts at your Demon and have the same but better cause it is a Demon. Not a good idea.
As I’m sure you know, I would never do that. Haha.
I'm saying fake news here.... "kinda blown up slant 6" is a lie. We all know its the most indestructible motor ever lol. ALSO if it wasn't videoed I wouldn't have believed anyone could get one of those Milwaukee right angle impact wrenches to get the k-member bolts out. I've tried my compact one before and had to break out the old air powered stuff.
As a veteran of sending a rod through the side of a slant six… I have evidence to the contrary 😅 everything came apart too easily on this one, I am not banking on that ever working again.
Oh, nooo!! CA 2TVS023? Don't y'know what famous tv show that car is from? Worth a small fortune, uh, in original form, 'cuz Telly Savalas drove 2TVS in the series! Ya poor, (now) customizing fool....
I feel like I’m missing something important here 😅
