Akuma gave up his humanity, but he still doesn't come across as straight up evil since he still has a sense of honor that keeps him from killing arbitrarily. He just doesn't strike me as evil like Bison, just amoral.
You are correct, Gouki (Akuma) is amoral and does not kill indiscriminately. He did not kill Gen because Gen was sick even though he still had the power to resist the Raging Demon and he regrets attacking Gouken.
agreed. if anything I would say it's a testament to Akuma's own willpower that he controls the dark hado without becoming full-blown evil. from my understanding they created Evil Ryu and Oni for "what if?" purposes to show what would happen if they did go over the edge. he's sparred with several fighters, shown concern for others, even made a friend. there are times, though, when he just seems to decide to fuck things up for whatever reason. like that submarine >

Evil Ryu and Oni are canon and non canon. Evil Eyu has happen but only for an instant, he went evil when he did that uppercut that caused that huge scar on his chest be he did not notice it because it was the heat of battle and the adrenaline was flowing.
Oni is what would happen if Gouki (Akuma) was to give in to the Dark Hado completely but his honor and his pride (which in my opinion is like dozens of time stronger than Vegeta's) will not allow it.
BigBlackGWAR are you talking about from the comics when he scarred sagat? udon comics aren't canon either :P ryu has tapped into the dark hado before in canon, but he has never become the "evil ryu" we know as a character.

In Street Fighter Alpha he was the brother of Gouken and was trained under the Ansatsuken teacher Gotetsu then wanted to become the evil side of the Ansatsuken technique then he would train under Gotetsu a couple more years while Gouken left and was looking for a good side to the art he practices then Akuma returns years later and kills Gotetsu then goes into secret hiding

they aren't related,if they are I think akuma/gouki was actually the original ryu before he tapped into the satsui no hado,and the ryu that we currently know is,a being split from gouki's soul and is left of gouki's humanity,kinda like how bison and rose are halfs of the same being,I don't think gouki is literally ryu's fahter,that would be too cliche and similar to star wars.

@@SupportGamin2024 cliches become cliche for a reason. It's because they work and are part of much greater archetypes. Just because it happens a lot in many different stories doesn't mean it's not a good story and It's upsetting that in today's current fiction fans and writers alike are always looking for the big twist. Usually not relying on telling a solid story which kind of has to include cliche or two. When you try so desperately to avoid them it usually can weaken the narrative. Different structures are held up in very similar ways because that is the most efficient way to hold that structure up and such as same thing with stories if you try to make the structure of a story different for the sake of being different The Narrative has a tendency to fall apart. Look at anything M Night Shyamalan did after Unbreakable.
The truth is, Akuma is Ryu. Akuma is from the future, but from an alternate time line. In Akuma's timeline Ryu is seduced by blood lust and masters the dark arts of fighting, hence becoming Akuma, a powerful fighter with murderous intent.Aug 18, 2001
Just a single correction: Goutetsu was a practitioner of Ansatsuken, not satsui no hado, satsui no hado is not a fighting style, but rather harnessing the energy of hatred and darkness.

I always did prefer the aesthetic of Oni Akuma over vanilla Akuma. Gives off a much greater sense of savagery in his demeanor and presentation.

I know. I guess vanilla Akuma seems like a middle step in the evolution that I just don't find as fun as Oni? Like from a character design perspective, I think it would have been more fun to just go there with the character straight away. Just personal taste/opinion and what have you.
i prefer shin akuma's look in CvS2 personally. that was the best iteration yet. shin akuma and god rugal are the things nightmares are made of.

If you think about it, Akuma just wanted to pursue his martial art without any restrictions. Usually martial arts get watered down, to remove all the moves that can kill. Akuma wanted to learn the art uncensored so he can use it to its fullest ability. He just wanted to be the best. That is also, why Gen, another martial artist who trained in assassination arts, was a good rival. Gen at his prime, vs Akuma would have been a good fight.
Akuma may have "broke his rule" and killed Bison at the end of SF2 because he saw what Bison was and how he was already consumed by psycho power. So either seeing psycho power as monstrous and or seeing Bison as already dead because he has to switch bodies to survive, Akuma may not have judged him as a living fighter and so just killed him.

I wish they make a Street Fighter Prequel game about the past and origins of every older fighter in their younger days such as:Gouken,Gen,Akuma,M Bison,Zeku,etc.
I be imagining a origin or prequel myself. Such as WHY Bison kills Chun-Li's father!!!! I came up with the two fought together in a war against another country,young Bison was a mercenary. The two became close friends until some years later after chun-li was about 5 or 6 years old,Bison kills the father because he didn't want nothing to do with the dark path Bison has chosen one he discovered Psycho Drive.
Some times I like to imagine the evil ryu story from alpha 3 as a prequel to akuma's story. If you think about evil ryu is like a younger akuma in a sense.
I remember playing Akuma a LONG while back in Capcom Vs SNK 2 and SNK Vs Capcom. Nowadays in SFV and Tekken 7, he's still my main...even if I'm not that good at fighting games.

Oni isn't a 'what-if' possibility. If u read Rose's win quote against him in the game she says that Oni appears too early on ... implying that Akuma WILL one day become Oni .
You forgot that Akuma killed Gill in Street Fighter III 2nd Impact. And Shin Akuma is canon but not the Capcom vs SNK 2 version.

It's a shame Capcom is so lazy with their lore and doesn't embrace some of the stellar character arcs that are here. There's no growth with these characters at all, no resolutions to climactic battles game after game, they simply ignore any semblence of their story and let the anime, comics and fans do all the heavy lifting. Then they retread the exact same stories once more and don't resolve these either. How is Ryu still struggling with the Satsui No Hado? How hasn't there been a definite winner with consequences between him and Akuma? It's ridiculously silly.
With sales of SFV utterly disappointing, as a long time fan it actually makes me smile as they just don't get it. It isn't enough for these games just to have great gameplay anymore, you have to have content and context to what is going on. Until Street Fighter does this, it will continue its march to being a niche franchise when it deserves so much better.
+The Rose Experience Also, it's been inferred and pretty much accepted that Shin "True" Akuma is him perfecting his art without fully giving in to the SNH. He strikes the balance and masters it. Oni is the SNH taking over his will and transforming him into a monster. My guess is that Shin Akuma is the strongest form of the character, but Oni is the more likely outcome. Once again, shame on Capcom for not giving a true resolution to Akuma, or anyone else's arc. Time to get Ono off the lead of this franchise.

In an animated Street Fighter Alpha movie, when Ryu asks if Akuma had a son, Akuma replies, "Where I fight, I fight alone. Where I walk, I walk alone", thus revealing that Ryu is NOT Akuma's son.

Same here, King was one of my fav tekken characters ever sinced I've played tekken 4 and he caught my eye for the first time because he looked so cool wearing a jaguar mask.
Akuma/Gouki/Oni is my favorite character from any lore ever.

Goutetsu's fighting style is Ansatsuken, not Satsui No Hado, which is only the part dealing with the use of dark power. But even Ansatsuken is a word that simply refers to any martial art created for and used for lethal purposes. In this, it is similar to the ancient japanese martial arts possessing the suffixe -jutsu or jitsu) that were defined as systems used for the battlefield as opposed to modern systems with the suffixe -do that refer to martial arts used for personal development or sports....like kenjutsu vs kendo, for exemple. This difference is essentially what separates fighters like Akuma and Gouken, even though they trained in the same system of martial arts.
Hey history of the warrior! Huge fan of your vidoes. I'm mostly a tekken fan and know little about street fighter so seeing Akuma in this new Tekken really interested me. I actually thought that he was the main villain of Street fighter due to his popularity but thanks to this video I see how it is really bison. Akuma does indeed seem like a cool character. I like that he is bad but has a sense of honor about him. Him being friends with Kazumi and willing to kill Heihachi actually makes more sense now. Hopefully there will be more about him that will connect the dots between his character and the Mishima's in the future.
The prayer beads are a way to intentionally handicap himself. It's like permanent holy water on a demon. He fights mortals while wearing the beads so he doesn't have an unfair supernatural advantage. He wants the most from his opponents.

Gouki may have left his humanity and accepted the Dark hadou, but one thing still stands, he follows a code of honor as a warrior and only fights those who are as strong as him, those weaker than him he finds no sense of joy or anything.

In response to the last thing you said at around 9:50. If akuma found an opponent worthy he would continue fighting to the death. But a lot of those opponents and he didn't find worthy while fighting them you walked away. That's what I think why his integrity is kind of sordid when it comes how many wins and losses he has on his record.

great job on his story. only thing u missed out is from street fighter origins akuma book is the reason why he killed gotetsu was because gotetsu sent him away for pilgrimage for a warrior in the mountains and at some point he came across some warriors who killed his father...from which he realised these men trained underneath gotetsu who were corrupted by the pilgrimage in the mountains. out of revenge he killed gotetsu

Akuma is a perfect true demon, we can't say him bad, he mastered all the skills, gen was laughing and coughing at him after his defeat and he said that until he has no humanity, he cannot be a demon god, but I think he is, and he has humanity because among a weak opponent he asks his rival If he wants to leave or if he's feared of him, he give them a chance to walk away , otherwise he kills his opponent, if the opponent even survives he don't care, he consider his rival defeated, and I think that's enough of humanity in him because he's a demon, because if he has no humanity he would kill anyone even when his opponent was not ready.

Keep in mind that Akuma and Oro fought to a stalemate, with Oro having one arm tied behind his back. And we have yet to see Akuma fight Morrigan canon, much less in the fully formed power modes.
