Matt, I have tied on this vise for 20+ years and have been very satisfied with it. When I bought it I bought the vise extension piece as I felt the jaw location was squished together with the main body of the vise, and the extension piece spread things out. I too had to replace the jaws a couple of times. The original jaws were soft and I got a replacement free, but I had to pay shipping. The second jaw set opened up after a 6 or 7 years, but the set I have on are still on and don't give any hook grip problems. I am left handed tyer and the rotation tension adjustment kept loosening in use. I replaced the threaded metric nut inside the body with one having a nylon locking insert in the threads ( acts like a lock washer). That cost about $ 0.50 at Home Depot, and that fixed it. I assume this was becauseI the vice was designed to be used by predominantly righties. Good basic rotary. When I bought mine it was less than $ 100 including the jaw extension piece. I tied commercially on this vise for over 10 years.
Don, great comment! Thank you for this solid feedback. I'm going to pin this comment for future viewers in case they want to do some of the same fixes you did. Thanks again!
Thanks for the review of the Danvice, If my granddaughter was more active tying I would encourage her to do the review. I like your honest review. Thanks Matt. I agree, no sense in letting it sit in a drawer... anything is better after you beat up your AA that you start with......
Matt, great review. No need to apologize for honesty!! I was lucky enough to be able to try this vise out 5yrs ago and I came to very similar conclusions. Keep up the great reviews and opinions. Have a great day and tight lines!
Thank you Steve! I guess vises are kind of a personal choice and a lot of people get used to a style and end up liking it. But yeah, I don't think I could tie on this long enough to get used to it. Appreciate the note my friend.
Appreciate it Neil! And if I recall, you won the Peak, right? How's that holding up for you? I was out at the farm this weekend and tied a dozen or so flies on it. It's still pretty fun to use. :-)
@@SavageFlies hey Matt, no Peak win for me! I have a Griffin Odyssey and I'm pretty happy with it. Good value overall and I think I've seen them for as little as $85. You also did a good review of that vise - but after I'd already bought one 😉

Hi Matt. I appreciate the honesty in your reviews. While I read something’s about them I’ve never seen one up close. The vise will work well for someone. I have a vise that I like and for that reason I’m not entering in the draw. Hopefully someone that really needs a new one or an upgrade from a kit vise will win. Thanks for your giving back to the fly tying community. Take care.
Great review Matt, after watching your other video on vises. I’m leaning towards the Maximum catch. I find all your videos very relaxing to watch and understand. ✌️
Well thank you my Bandito friend! I took the Maxcatch rotary on my last trip and I still think it's a pretty solid vise. It's definitely easy to travel with but not a bad choice for an everyday vise either. :-)
There is no reason to apologize on your review of a product that you really don’t like. Your insight is much appreciated. Besides, you may have given #Danvise some great intel on how to make their product better. As always, enjoyed the video. Keep it up and can’t wait for the next one.

Thanks Colin; I appreciate the feedback my friend! One time long ago I recommended a book and they guy told me he didn't like it and I felt terrible. It's not like I'm Oprah or anything, but if I'm going to review something that someone might buy based on my recommendation, I want them to know how I really feel. As far as books go, I'll just skip reviewing one that I wouldn't recommend. But this vise? I'd already bought it so I thought I might as well tell everybody what I think.
This is the vice I'm using and after one year I'm on here looking for a replacement for every reason you stated. I purchased it from a fly shop that I found out later was getting out of the business. I think I was bamboozled! Anyway I'm going to continue watching your videos and see if I can find a rotary vice in my price range.. Thanks for the information.
You're most welcome Timothy! Thank you for the note. I'm a bit shocked at the price increases of some of the vises I reviewed three or so years ago. Like the Peak Rotary, which I still like was $155 I think just a few years ago and is now at least $210 almost everywhere. If you're still looking for a rotary, check out the Nirvana V2. It's a pretty good deal if you can find it for about $150.
I have this vise for tying hair jigs sizes 10-2/0. I've had it over a decade and I'd estimate I've run more than 10,000 hooks through it and it has held up great. If you are careful about adjusting the jaw tension the jaws will last a very, very long time. My original jaws lasted about 8 years and I'm still using the second set. I don't tie anything really small though. My setup is different than most, though. I started out with a "deluxe" fly tying kit from Cabela's that came in a wooden case. The pedestal that came with it fit the Danvise and I tie sitting in a recliner with the case sitting in my lap and all my tools and materials laid out on it. The Danvise is just perfect for this and at this point I'm so used to tying on it anything else would probably seem like a downgrade. 😂
hey Matt, thanks for your honest review. As a beginner in fly tying your videos have helped me tremendously. This vise would definitely be an upgrade from my vise that came with my kit! Keep the videos coming! #danvise
Thanks Matt for your review Not every product out there is something you will want to recommend but you probably save some folks the disappointment. I hope it finds a good home. Mike
Matt, another great video! I was finally able to fish the Savage last weekend and enjoyed it tremendously. Only caught one but can’t wait to try again! #danvise
Good Afternoon Sir Matt, thank you for the honest opinion, and I totally agree with you about it being an upgrade for a new fly tyer. So good luck and congrats to who wins it, it is a nice looking vise, but I have to admit I'm all ready spoiled by my New Regal Medallion with pedestal. Have a great day Sir Matt see you on Tuesday
Great review! The Danvise was actually my first rotary vise and I still use it a lot for flies that might get my beautiful Regal vise dirty. :) I would recommend this vice for anyone's first rotary vice, it is pretty easy to use. My only issue is that after about a year the tips of the jaws opened up a bit and couldn't hold anything under a size 12. I did buy replacement jaws and nothing else has gone wrong since. I was given the vice used and I am going to guess that it was at least 10 years old when I got it so the durability seems acceptable for how much it had been tied on. I am not a vice expert for sure but I have been impressed by the Danvice so far, although there might be other vices like you said that have more bang for your buck. Keep up the great content!
Thanks Justin; I appreciate the feedback my friend! And yeah, overall I could see this vise lasting a pretty long time. But maybe I'm just spoiled tying on my Regal for the last few years and that made this one hard for me to use. But in all fairness, this will be a decent vise for someone, particularly if they don't yet tie on a rotary.
I bought a Dan vice when they 1st came out it is still the only vice I use. I didn't get the cam lock version as there were some reported issues at the time. The screw lock version is possibly slower, but you get to adjust the angle between the jaws & sometimes that is the only way to hold some hooks secure, because of their shape. I did initially find that the rotary lock didnlt work well, but examining revealed th ewashers were somewhat cone shaped. By carefully pairing these up I was able to get sufficient friction to lock or free the rotation as desired.
Good review, Matt. I had a shop owner try to talk me into this one many years ago. I passed and bought the original Renzetti Traveler. Gave up on it eventually. Would love to have a true rotary, but not with a horde of adjustments.
Now that's one I might do a review on soon Jim. I've never played around with the Renzetti Traveler but that's been a popular one for a while. Also the Wolff Atlas. I've never tied on that but it looks solid...
I got this vice at least 20 years ago. I'm not the most productive fly tyer in the world but it has never let me down and I did fill up my various fly boxes a few times using it. Tied everything from #18 klinkhammers to #4 saltwater trout flies. Don't have much to compare it to as it always did the job just fine and couldn't justify spending more. Things I don't like is tying tube flies on it and I never got along with the weird clamp. I bought a cheap pedestal for it which is much nicer to use.
Thanks Jeremy! If you haven't seen it yet, check out my "5 vises for under $100" video. There are three vises in there that I would recommend over this one. The Crown, the Spider and the Maxcatch. I think I've done separate reviews on the Spider and Maxcatch as well.
Thanks Matt for the hands on straight forward review. #Danvise, The Danica Danvise doesn't match up to a REGAL but better than vise grips. Have a great week and God Bless.
Ha! You got that right Sam. And can you imagine tying like some of the really old school guys who didn't even use a vise? Maybe we should try tying one with our hands and no bobbin. Now that would be a challenge!
Thanks for the honest and thorough vise review. almost bought this vise a while ago but the "plastic" parts made me uneasy about how durable the vise would be. could alwys use a traveller" though. love the channel and videos. #Danvise
Appreciate it Rob. I actually think the plastic won't take away from its durability. It was just difficult to tie small flies for me. Otherwise I think it's still a decent vise. Good luck my friend!
Thanks for your great reviews Matt! I would love to upgrade to this #Danvise from my beginner tying kit vise, as next year I plan to buy a 10 wt rod to fish northern pike and this winter I want to tie up a bunch of larger flies in preparation for that!
1st vise i bought...probably 15ish years ago...still going strong, although I mostly use it as a travel vise now. Early jaws were a little soft but updated replacement jaws are better. I believe there is a pedestal base available for this vise with a little looking as well. Honest review for certain.
Thanks for the honest review Matt. I almost bought this vise at one point but instead I bought the Crown vise and spent the extra on materials I bought my Crown and enjoy tying on it because i've never used a true rotary vise before. I am however saving my pennies for a Regal with the full rotary function which is a lot of pennies,,lol. But I would like to atleast try a full rotary. #Danvise.
Thanks Cephas! I tell you for a true rotary, the Peak is a solid choice. I was at my farm this weekend so tied a dozen or so flies on it. It's nice, but also, I am very spoiled with my Regal Revolution. And yeah, that thing is a lot of pennies! Meanwhile, I just sent you an email about another option...
@@SavageFlies Yeah I eye balled that vise for for a long time. Never thought about that lever assembly hindering clearance when turning it upside down. Rotary for $100 sort of blinds ya. Good call.
@@joeduca8582 And honestly, I only tied one fly with it, but as soon as I flipped it upside down, I'm thinking how the hell can I tie a throat on this thing?? My fingers are way too fat or this fly is too small! And it was only a #12 so not really tiny at all.
That was my first vice. It served it’s purpose. I still use it as my travel vice when I wanna tie when away on a business or family trip and don’t wanna have to worry about losing my Renzetti. I really have only one complaint about it but it’s a big one. The steel jaws are very soft and are easily damaged with too much pressure.
Yeah, I could see that being the case. But for a casual tier, this thing will probably last a fairly long time. But for those of us who tie a lot, jaws that wear out too quickly are a deal breaker.
I agree with you Matt. I’ve seen this vice and I think there’s better values out there. I have a griffin spider cam vice and it’s better than that one. And I believe I paid less money for it. Thanks for you review. And honesty
Yep, I'd go with any of the Griffin's over this one. Their Mongoose is great, and the Spider is easier to tie on than this one. Even the non-cam version.
Thx for the honest review! I’m still using a vise from a starter kit, so this sure would be an upgrade. Having the rotation option would really be nice. Cheers! And good luck to everybody typing #Danvise
have looked at this vice for a few years. Interesting review. #Danvise

Got this vise for about 50$ over 20 years ago. And it is still the vise I use today. It's also the vise a friend uses and he is selling flies for a living. Why we both like it? We can really tighten the hell out of it and it really stays in place. I also use this vise to prep my salmon leader snail knot and it's really holding as I pull super hard.
Thanks Ben, that's a pretty solid testament to the durability of this vise. I appreciate you leaving the comment for others to see!

@@SavageFlies I am actually hoping to come across one because mine is so old I feel like the top rotative par is made of some sort of carbon composite.
I am interested in this vise because as you know I am still using a 15 dollar vise and ad you said this would be an upgrade...thanks for the work you do #Danvise
Thanks for the review & that you were perfectly honest. It would be an advantage to have an extra vise at my table at a fly tying show to teach with & that is probably where I would task this vise. #danvise
It is always hard to do a review and you did a great job on this vice. You are being very honest that the vice is not a vice for you but maybe it will be a good vice for another person. #Danvise
I have a Danvise and a Renzetti vise. Both are good vises and have not have any issues with either. I only tie crappie jigs so I can't comment on it for trout size flies. The only issue I have with the Danvise is the base is a tad smaller than 3/8. There is only one pedestal base that will fit it and it's kind of hard to find.
I know this isn’t fly tying related, but would you recommend a 7’6 4wt fly rod for someone who fishes small to medium sized creeks and rivers for trout that average around 12 inches and for bass averaging around the same sizes? #Danvise
No worries, I don't mind these questions. The 8 1/2 to 9 foot 5-wt has long been the go-to rod for trout. Not too big for the small streams, and just beefy enough to toss some big streamers in bigger water. That would probably be my recommendation, but a 4-wt is still a great choice. One thing to note, if you find yourself really getting into the sport, you'll probably end up with a range of sizes. I think I only have one 4-wt and I bought that because it was too good of a deal to pass up. But I've probably got at least a half dozen each of 3-wt and 5-wt rods. Some folks recommend sticking with either even or odd sizes. Ie, if you start with a 5-wt, when you expand your arsenal, you could go with a 3-wt and then a 7-wt. If you started with a 4-wt, next you could go with a 6-wt and an 8-wt, or a 6-wt and a 2-wt. (Depending on if you're more likely to fish really big water or really small water.) I kind of like this philosophy, and for the most part I'm an odd-size guy. Meaning 90% of my fishing is with the 3-wt or 5-wt. I do have a couple of 2s and 7s, but I don't break them out too often.
@@SavageFlies I’ve been thinking about a next rod already lol I’m thinking about going bigger for catfish and carp because I fish them with spinning gear a lot
@@SavageFlies the rod I want also has a lifetime warranty in case I push it too hard And I think the company allows you to change sizes if you break one and get another with the warranty since they’re the same prices
I think that my Thompson, which still works ok, is soon to be upgraded to one that is rotary like the #Danvise. Your review gives me some info to use to decide on the replacement. Thank you.
I wouldn't mind a #Danvise at all. I already tied some flies on one and it got the job done. I was even surprised that it goes pretty high without feeling unstable. Anyway, nice review, cheers!
Thanks Olof. And you're right; there's not much wobble to it, but it's just hard for me to tie small flies with the bulky jaw mount. This thing might be great if you tied a lot of big flies. :-)
I can't remember Daniel, but I think so. Either way, don't worry my friend. I know you're a tier. You've been watching my videos for a good while now. :-) And oh yeah, see if you can edit this comment... it's #Danvise with an S. :-)
#danvise .... Would use for particular flies..... Great giveaway opportunity. Matt you are a great inspiration for the fly tying community. Keep up the great work and videos!
#danvise I have a Renzetti I usually tie on but I can see a use for this one, I need another end for a brush-making rig I'm making. Keep the good, honest stuff coming Matt.
Interesting vise! It’s definitely different than a lot of others. Would kids’ smaller hands work better in that compact looking space behind the hook? #danvise
That's a good question Kyle, and I'm thinking probably so. I just know I would have a hard time tying a #16 or smaller with this, and a lot more of my flies are on the small side than the big side. That being said, if you tie a lot of streamers, it's not a bad choice. Good luck my friend!
Yep Dan, aside from the vises like the AA or a standard kit vise being a little hard to tweak, a lot of them lose their holding power in the first couple of years. I think this one is a solid upgrade. Good luck!

Thank you for the honest review. This was one of the vises I was considering buying to upgrade from my AA. #Danvise
It’s better than nothing, but not better than the something I have. Thanks for be so honest.
Thanks for your great reviews Matt! I would love to upgrade to this #Danvise from my beginner tying kit vise, as next year I plan to buy a 10 wt rod to fish northern pike and this winter I want to tie up a bunch of larger flies in preparation for that!
Holy cow, a 10-wt for some Northern Pike? That's going to be a blast! I think this vise will do pretty well with big flies. Good luck my friend. :-)
1st vise i bought...probably 15ish years ago...still going strong, although I mostly use it as a travel vise now. Early jaws were a little soft but updated replacement jaws are better. I believe there is a pedestal base available for this vise with a little looking as well. Honest review for certain.
Appreciate the note my friend!
@@SavageFlies I recieved your email and thank you very much.
Really great review yet again! Loved the honesty! I’m currently using a cabelas kit vise so I still think it would be a definite upgrade #Danvise
Thanks Ross and good luck my friend!
Great review Matt. Thanks
Appreciate it Joe!
@@SavageFlies Like I've said before, you give really honest reviews. Thanks!
#danvise I totally agree Matt. Thanks again. Always appreciate your honesty.
Thx for the honest review! I’m still using a vise from a starter kit, so this sure would be an upgrade. Having the rotation option would really be nice. Cheers! And good luck to everybody typing #Danvise
Appreciate it Malthe. Good luck my friend!
have looked at this vice for a few years.
Agree my friend! Good luck to you. :-)
Good review helped alot
I'm still using Orvis fly kit vise. Would love this for rotation.
#Danvise
…as always, Matt gives us good info!
This would be an improvement to my current set up.
#Danvise
Thanks Kevin, and good luck my friend!
Thanks for the feedback, this is useful information about the #Danvise.
You bet Klaas, good luck!
Thanks for the review & that you were perfectly honest. It would be an advantage to have an extra vise at my table at a fly tying show to teach with & that is probably where I would task this vise. #danvise
That would actually be a pretty good use of this one David. Good luck my friend!
It is always hard to do a review and you did a great job on this vice. You are being very honest that the vice is not a vice for you but maybe it will be a good vice for another person. #Danvise
Appreciate it Darrell. But check your spelling my friend! It's Danvise with an S. :-)
Good point on the stem size. I should have pulled it out to show how it would fit (or not fit well) in a standard pedestal base.
@@SavageFlies the main reason for me is that the combo I found is in 7’6 4 wt and with 40 bucks off the normal price
@@SavageFlies I’ve been thinking about a next rod already lol
I’m thinking about going bigger for catfish and carp because I fish them with spinning gear a lot
@@SavageFlies the rod I want also has a lifetime warranty in case I push it too hard
And I think the company allows you to change sizes if you break one and get another with the warranty since they’re the same prices
@@Tcam0720 Sounds like a great deal!
Grandson would like to have it. Thanks for for a great channel #Danvise
Pluses and minuses I like it. Thanks for the time and info #danvise
Great honest review Matt. #Danvise
I think that my Thompson, which still works ok, is soon to be upgraded to one that is rotary like the #Danvise. Your review gives me some info to use to decide on the replacement.
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful Edward. Good luck my friend!
I’m getting into fly fishing and fly tying soon so hopefully I win. Good luck y’all
#Danvise
And good luck to you!
Thanks for the honest review. This vice would be a huge upgrade for me even though it has some faults.#Danvise
You're welcome Terry. And I got your email so you're good my friend. Good luck!
Thanks for the honest review. It would be an upgrade over what I am using. #Danvise
I’ve been using this vice for maybe 20 years
Cool to hear! Thanks for the note and hope you're having a great weekend my friend. :-)
Thank you for the honest review always enjoy #danvise
This would be a good starter for my grandson. I’d like to get him into tying his own flies and lures. He loves to fish.
#Danvise
I love to hear that Will. Good luck my friend!
Appreciate the honest review Matt. Would definitely be an upgrade from what I have though #danvise
You bet my friend and good luck!
#Danvise. I always enjoy your honest reviews.
#Danvice matt did you get my picture of my fly tying baseThank you for all you do for the sport
I can't remember Daniel, but I think so. Either way, don't worry my friend. I know you're a tier. You've been watching my videos for a good while now. :-) And oh yeah, see if you can edit this comment... it's #Danvise with an S. :-)
Thank you Matt!! That c clamp is very interesting but it looks like it will last a while! #danvise
Great review!! Thoroughly enjoy your videos. #danvise
#danvise .... Would use for particular flies..... Great giveaway opportunity. Matt you are a great inspiration for the fly tying community. Keep up the great work and videos!
Thanks Ryan; I appreciate the support my friend! Good luck on the drawing. :-)
#Danvise. Matt, thank you for all your doing!
Thanks George! Check your hashtag. I think your spellcheck got you on this one; Danville sounds like a city. :-)
@@SavageFlies thanks Matt!
#danvise I have a Renzetti I usually tie on but I can see a use for this one, I need another end for a brush-making rig I'm making. Keep the good, honest stuff coming Matt.
Oh yeah, you could definitely use this for brush making. :-)
Appreciate the honest review. #Danvise
Enjoyed the review would like to find true rotary might try one of these.#Danvise
Another realy great vídeo Mat TKS. #Danvise
Appreciate it Cesar! Have a great week my friend. :-)
I actually have that vise I got it for free it was actually one hell of an upgrade it works for now
Good to hear Justin. Appreciate the note my friend. :-)
You know, you can purchase a extension arm for the Danvise. It makes the vise more useful!
Thanks for your eval.....keep up the good work..#danvice
Kevin, check your spelling! It's Danvise with an S my friend. :-)
Another great review Matt! #danvise
Thanks Felipe! And BTW, check your spelling my friend. It's #Danvise. :-)
@@SavageFlies 😅
Hi Matt. thank for the review. #Danvise
Thank you for your honest review. #Danvise
The kit vise is the boat I'm in, this #danvise would definitely be an upgrade, over it, finally losing its grip on pretty much any hooks
Yep Dan, aside from the vises like the AA or a standard kit vise being a little hard to tweak, a lot of them lose their holding power in the first couple of years. I think this one is a solid upgrade. Good luck!
Matt this would be an upgrade for my grandson.
#Danvise
Good luck Al! I'll be doing the drawing this afternoon. But note, change the spelling of Danvise in your comment. It's with an S. :-)
Thanks for the review Matt #Danvise
Have wanted one for several years. #Danvise
Steven, I just did the drawing and congrats, you won the vise! Send me an email with your mailing address and I'll get it on the way to you. (matt@savageflies.com)
