  • Just don't do it.
    Why?
Because your pepper will do it naturally! (Most of the time)
and when it does, you will get the same results as if you did top it, except with reduced flowers and fruit.
Topping sets the plant back by at least 2-3 weeks, so in shorter growing seasons of less than 180-200 days, this can lead to reduced harvests.

Totally agree. Here in the UK I topped a few Birds Eye plants this season and left a few alone. Topping lost at least a month of growing time and didn’t improve yield at all.

Yup! I’m glad you found the same thing. It’s a debate with some gardeners, and like I mention only really works when you’re in a loooong growing season. They usually branch out naturally. I hope you sub as well! :)

I topped nearly all my peppers cause before I thought that was the way to go. My jalapeño plants were just much smaller this time, way more bushy and actually made very small size peppers. It was a total letdown. The ones that didn’t get topped I had a few grew much better and produced much nicer size jalapeño.
Next year not topping a single plant, I watched it split into 2, then those 2 split into 4. The plant still grew many legs but much taller, easy to handle with tomato cages. Again much nicer peppers.

We all learn! I topped a pepper before, and it was a letdown like yours was. Definitely is a setback for the plants. I hope you subscribe too!

@@AbundantGardening It's what I enjoy about growing! It sounds simple but yet much to learn and it's a lot of fun to see the results when you do something new

Are you able to start new plants from cuttings?

Yes, you can! It isn’t as easy as tomatoes, but they can be rooted. I hope you subscribe as well. :)

Cutting the top resulted in 18% more peppers but thinner membrane (inside)peppers and not as big...university study.

Yeah, thanks for sharing! This results in a less overall harvest. I hope you subscribe for more, thanks again!!

What do you mean? Ive been gardening for the better part of a decade, and if you look at big channels results on this experiment, they have similar findings. Topping pepper plants (unless you live in a long growing season) results in a smaller overall harvest. Even if you get more peppers, they weigh less and therefore hinder production

@@AbundantGardening u allow dem split = u fakd up bikoz they'll grow fokken 2 meters tall. so prune must be done, and done early.

my peppers and all of my friends and family peppers have NEVER grown 6 feet tall. In fact there are not really ANY peppers that make it that tall ever. 99% of my peppers are 2 feet (.66 meters) to 3 feet (1 meter) tall. And I still like to stake them as the wind sometimes knocks them over. I am not talking about pruning, I am talking about topping the plants. That is bad and will reduce your harvest, but if you want to reduce your harvest, gardening is all about exploration, so have fun in the garden!
