    Gabriel, it’s the little things you do consistently in your videos which I love - showing the exact location on a map at the beginning of each video, then the slow zoom in, the announcement of the date, giving us a timeline, the current ‘live’ temperature, etc. It just works really well for me and I’m sure I speak for others too. Little things, as I said.

    Have been watching all your 2023 series of videos , from Spain to Greece. So relaxing , especially Hydra , which "healed" me after a burnout, from too much work and lack of organization in 2018. Enginefree , only donkeys was literally an unbelievable experience of this island ..
    Poros is very beautiful , amazing watercolors and your genuine enthusiasm makes us share the experiences as if we were right there, next to you.
    I completely understand your love for Greece..gives you a feeling of freedom just islandhopping and discovering so much of its culture, history, traditions, music and breathtaking views.
    Thanks for your hard work and always best wishes from crowded , hot Paris.

    You seem a bit confused...
    It's not Greek or Macedonian. Macedonians were just one of the many Greek city states, Kingdoms and Democracies.
    The Hellenic league consisted of Spartans, Athenians, Macedonians, Epirotes, Arcadians, Thessalians, Ionians and many more. Which were all part of the Hellenic world.
    No one in the Hellenic League ever considered Macedonians as "Barbarians". They were always indistinguishable to the rest of the Greek people. All these Greek tribes had in common: Religion, Language, Mythology, Alphabet, Writing, School system, names for people (& animals), marriage rituals, ancient Gymnasiums, Traditions, Farming, Currency, Music, building style, Art, Food, etc. Greeks predominantly married only within the same Greek culture. Dress styles differentiated between each Greek tribe.
    They were always conflicts/wars between Greek states. They used always phrases to "dehumanize" each other during wars (calling each other barbarians, animals etc,). But during the Olympic games every 4 years (and other Hellenic festivals) they came always together in peace (at least as long as the festivities lasted). These festivals (Olympic games, Music festivals, Theater festivals etc.) were *only* for for Greek people (non-Barbarians). And Macedonians were *always* part of it. At common external threats like the Persians, they also fought together side by side.

    If Macedonians spoke the same language , had the same gods and culture with the rest of Greeks ( and they did) then they had to be Greeks.. The fact the Phillip fought the Athenians is no strange because at the time it was very common the cities-states to fight one another

    • @Originalman144
      @Originalman144 Год назад +2

      No, this logic does not follow. They were not the same people. Greek society has long been made up of an amalgamation of different ethnic groups, same as Roman, Byzantine, or Persian societies. Many groups traversed the land and islands some settling there. If you conquered a land you brought slaves and other workers back to the home base. People travelled and sometimes migrated and settled into different corners or islands for trade etc. Over time, some of those enslaved people would become free when there was a changing of the guard, death of a leader, or they procreated within the society. Classical Greece was made up of 4 ethnic groups: Dorians, Aeolians, Achaeans, and Ionians. It's not so simple, it's very complex.

      @@Originalman144 Apparently your knowledge of history is very shallow. Greek Society was made of the same people just on their own cities/territories. Even the ancient historian Herodotus says they Macedonians were Greek Dorian people who moved a little bit up north in the Greek mainland. Alexander the Great, his father Phillip the II and king Archelaos of Macedonia competed at the Olympic games where only Greeks were allowed. The rest you write about slaves etc it does not make any sense and there are no historical sources to support that. FIY slaves in ancient Greece very rarely freed and even then they never had political rights

    • @Originalman144
      @Originalman144 Год назад +1

      @@targo5707 I see what you’re saying, and I suppose my point is that the societies were an amalgamation of peoples. Just because they spoke the same language or worshiped the same gods doesn’t mean they were the same peoples. The Spartan citizens were Dorian Greeks to be specific but Helots also fought in the Spartan army but they were not considered Spartan citizens.

    • @Originalman144
      @Originalman144 Год назад +1

      @@user-sn6dz2ie4k Ok Sir, to my point, I’m saying the society was not homogeneous. Do you agree?Alexander was however instrumental in conquering and pushing many of the different groups that did exist out of the land.
      Going back further in history, the original inhabitants of Greece were the Pelasgians which are referred to as black or moorish peoples. The Pelasgians were replaced by the Hellenes. Homer called them (the Pelasgians) among the many tribes on Crete “noble Pelasgians.”
      To say that everyone in these lands was the same people, before the reign of Alexander, is simply erroneous. There are numerous historical accounts of the various ethnicities of people on Crete, on the Peloponnesus, and throughout the Aegean.

    On the other side of the hill of the temple, versus Vagionia bay, my family owns land. My father sold his share to his sister, who was planning to built country houses for her three children. When I saw that door laying there at 17:40 I started wondering what I'd need to just rehang it. The video rewind seemed to show a fairly intact roof. Nice lizard view too. Seems like a nice place to dry out after a cloudburst & rainfall. Luckily, it's easier now to get a believable forecast. Or, out of the service range & footprint the innate intuition can get grounded and be exercised there for a while. But, why is it so dry and dusty there? Are the herbivores eating up every tender green thing? No moisture is staying close to the ground, it seems.
    If you could just stay around for a couple of sunrises, I'm sure some regenerative plans might emerge. There's probably a fence line or 2 nearby which could prove that point. The Ecosystem Restoration Coop movement might get some nice greek island camps going for some type of Mediterranean basin initiatives. That would surely improve their 10€/month memberships and bring more FB participants. Gabe, pls scout for some restoration likely location. Thx btw.
    The search for ecosystemrestorationcommunities might reveal: " ... Long-term opportunities are structured volunteer opportunities that may involve camp building, communications, restoration or testing a business idea. Many restoration communities also welcome Master and PhD program students who want to collect data for a camp as part of their research. ... "
    There are videos too of over 55 global camp projects so far. Just saying. 🌲😎🌲 Gabe, thx for your inspiring visits. 💚

    I did not know about the arcaeological site on Poros, that was very interesting! Since it seems you are into it, you should absolutely visit Delos sometime. Also of course Athens comes second to none in terms of remnants from the 5th and 4th centuries BC (I wrote you a comment under another video about this). A couple of comments on that information board: Pausanias was a Greek from Anatolia, not Roman as it falsely states, but he did live during the Roman time. All of his tremendously important writings about his travels are originally in Greek. Also, there is no serious academical debate about whether Macedonians were ethnically Hellenic. It is indisputable historically. Case in point, they were allowed to compete in the Olympics, a privilege granted only to people with Greek heritage. The various tribes of the Hellenic area were frequently at war against each other. That is the case with Philipp the second of Macedon. Demosthenes the Athenian orator, the man who commit suicide in the area you were there, gave some of his most famous speeches against Philipp.

    The Macedonians are Hellenes just like those from Sparta, Crete, Rhodos, Athenians, Ipirus, etc. At that time they were divided as States but not ever united. King Phillip united the Hellenic states. When Alexander conquered the known world he spread only Hellenism. When he conquered Persia he did it out of revenge for what the Persians had done to the Hellenes. And if you go to the Museum where King Phillip is buried, it is quite clear they spoke Hellinika/Greek and ONLY Greek. The 100 Alexandrias all over the world have Greek and local language. The Ptolemaic dynasty, with the exception of Cleopatra only spoke Greek; Cleopatra spoke Greek and many more languages. The ‘Macedonian’ language appeared after the fall of the Byzantine Empire and is clearly a Slavic Language from the Slavic Migrants to the north.

    You sure do love those Greek salads. I’ll have to try one whenever I finally venture off to Greece. Do you think December is a good time to visit Greece? That’s probably the earliest I can make it there.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  Год назад +4

      You can go to Greece in December, but be prepared for it to be totally dead. The islands pretty much empty out by mid October, other than the super popular ones like Santorini and Mykonos. But even they will be very quiet by December. I spent ten days on Mykonos in February and I pretty much had the main tourist town to myself. So if you want to explore ghost towns and be the only person at restaurants then it will be a quiet, relaxing experience as well as chilly and likely rainy. If you want to go somewhere warmer and more happening then you might look into the Canaries.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  Год назад

      @@Alexander-bj6vj Yes, exactly, I meant where tourists would likely want to go. Of course Athens and a few of the larger cities on the islands will still be populated, but I think it's safe to say that most of the islands, especially the best ones will be very quiet, there won't be many restaurants or hotels open you will be pretty much the only tourist and not many locals either since a lot of the workers on the islands go back to Athens for the winter, because there's no work without the tourists.

      The Ancient name for this island was Kalaureia, Kalavria. Poros since ancient times until today has mostly meant Passage. Like the name Bosporos, Ox Passage. It’s important to note that the English words Pore & Porous also originate from the same original Greek word: Poros 🇬🇷👍🏻

    Some people annoyed from the prices.Gays Greece isn’t in Far east, it’s in Europe.A room for two in front of the sea and sandy beach, with whole the amenities and a swimming pool,at the end of June, is only 96€.A nice meat main course, a huge salad with feta cheese, olive paste deep with fried bread and a bottle of water 24€.I think these prices very normal.

    Greek was very popular destination for holidays because prices were low. It seems they are just as expensive or even more expensive now than Germany is. 25€ for the food is not a bargain. It is ok but not exactly cheap. Same is for the hotel. Around 100,- per night not cheap at all. Maybe it is high season. But even then ….

    Last month I turned on google maps just to stay alerted for radar - cops. I was surprised when the directions said to turn left at an L intersection. The road I was on had only one direction and that was to turn right, which looped back around to a main road. To the left there was a high chain fence separating about 40 feet of grass and a sidewalk running along a bigger road. Turning left would have had me smash into that fence. Fortunately it was bright daylight and like I said I was familiar with the road. If I had been new to the area, and if it had been night, google maps could have easily caused me to smash into that big chain fence that likely would have camaflauged in the dark.... morrow of the story... I was reminded to question everything and don't trust google maps just because it's a.i. generated. Apparently a.i. isn't the most intelligent upgrade after all. 😮
