    What a great coin! I just looked up proof trade dollars on ebay and only found one of a different date -- it was way out of most people's price range. Sweet!

  • @coreymerrill3257

    Omg that is sweet! I have found so few things in life that make me happy like they are able to...minerals amd gemstones and guns.music. Being in the forested mountains..thats about it.
    .its my personal goal to be able to afford and aquire the 1883 proof trade dollar, pf3cent nickel , shield and the cent and no cent v nickel proofs and cent,in the next two years...by 2023. 5 years goal is an ms64 1883 s morgan and the 1883 gold with $5 and less face value. 10 year is all dmpl(83philly,83o,83s,83cc) morgans and the proof/branch proof morgans of 1883 too...i hope to complete the standard set by 2022. Cent, dime, quarter, 50c and cc morgans.
    Goals or not its all about the oppertunities I can find and the money i do ( if lucky timing)or dont have . if i have the $$ and i find a great deal...yeah. Im getting it ahead of schedual. Once i have caught back up again , i may go for the 1883 california gold fractional i just saw. Thanks for sharing

    BIG fan of proofs. I’ve completed a 20th century proof type registry set. Currently number 12 on PCGS. I’ve actually just received my first 19th century proof in the mail yesterday. Stay tuned for a video!

    Awesome coin. Took me a long time to get one for my collection. It's interesting because the feel of it is like many foreign coins very flat Sharp is like our traditional dollars where there the edges are soft. 😊

    I love Trade Dollars. That's a great coin, but the grade may be a bit generous at 53.

    This 1880 PR53 Trade dollar has a light golden patina to it rather than the usual frosty white raised areas & dark reflective fields. Too bad it got used as pocket change back in the day rather than being preserved as a presentation piece

    How do these do as in holding value or rising in value over many years? Anything like gold or are these collection pieces only.

    • @TheCoinGeek
      @TheCoinGeek  3 года назад +2

      It is a collector piece. Very low mintage.

    If a coin of this vintage is not from a proof-only year, how do you tell if the coin is a proof? Circulated proof coins from this time period often look essentially the same as the non-proof coins to my uneducated eye.

      It can be pretty tough - some coins have diagnostics that will help, but others are difficult.

    Ben...you really did not explain sufficiently how to detect a proof coin through visual examination rather than relying on the Red Book telling one of the years only proofs were minted. A slightly circulated coin can have reflective field surfaces as well so how can graders tell a proof from a business struck coin in years with both strikes?

    • @TheCoinGeek
      @TheCoinGeek  3 года назад +1

      I got called out - and rightfully so. If this were not a proof only issue it would be really hard to convince anyone that it is a proof.
