Which coin would you rather have?
Never owned a proof trade dollar. They are nice coins with an interesting history. Thanks for sharing. 😀👍
@Native Marauder Nice to see you sir! 😀👍
@Native Marauder I've tried Banning Ontario .... but everybody loves him.
I have a 1877, and no chop marks, on it ,1st one I've ever seen, I like the Trade Dollars. Cool proof coin you have. ✌😁
Thanks Ben. Interesting coin. I had heard of them but had never seen one previously.
What a great coin! I just looked up proof trade dollars on ebay and only found one of a different date -- it was way out of most people's price range. Sweet!
Omg that is sweet! I have found so few things in life that make me happy like they are able to...minerals amd gemstones and guns.music. Being in the forested mountains..thats about it.
.its my personal goal to be able to afford and aquire the 1883 proof trade dollar, pf3cent nickel , shield and the cent and no cent v nickel proofs and cent,in the next two years...by 2023. 5 years goal is an ms64 1883 s morgan and the 1883 gold with $5 and less face value. 10 year is all dmpl(83philly,83o,83s,83cc) morgans and the proof/branch proof morgans of 1883 too...i hope to complete the standard set by 2022. Cent, dime, quarter, 50c and cc morgans.
Goals or not its all about the oppertunities I can find and the money i do ( if lucky timing)or dont have . if i have the $$ and i find a great deal...yeah. Im getting it ahead of schedual. Once i have caught back up again , i may go for the 1883 california gold fractional i just saw. Thanks for sharing
Nice coin.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! How did they back in the day get an individual grain of silver or other precious metals?
Thanks Ben, very interesting coin and video.
love the trade dollar. used to have a few none as good as this one.
BIG fan of proofs. I’ve completed a 20th century proof type registry set. Currently number 12 on PCGS. I’ve actually just received my first 19th century proof in the mail yesterday. Stay tuned for a video!
This is so cool, Ben! I’ve always wanted a Trade Dollar, proof or otherwise! Thanks for the video!
Omg please resist the urge to crack out that coin! Can you say "XF details, cleaned"?
Awesome coin. Took me a long time to get one for my collection. It's interesting because the feel of it is like many foreign coins very flat Sharp is like our traditional dollars where there the edges are soft. 😊
I love Trade Dollars. That's a great coin, but the grade may be a bit generous at 53.
Nice. If that was in a PCGS holder then it would be MINE!!!! Breakout and send to PCGS.
I just asked my L.C.S. yesterday about getting a graded trade dollar. I have been wanting one for years now. I just keep spending all of my currency on Mercury's and Walkers lol
Great information
Very nice trade dollar ben i dont have none yet my goal for next year is to get the trade dollar you have on ebay unc details environmental damage i like its look and its pretty cheap for being a unc trade dollar for my us type set

Normal
This 1880 PR53 Trade dollar has a light golden patina to it rather than the usual frosty white raised areas & dark reflective fields. Too bad it got used as pocket change back in the day rather than being preserved as a presentation piece
How do these do as in holding value or rising in value over many years? Anything like gold or are these collection pieces only.
It is a collector piece. Very low mintage.
would love to own that.
The slab looks a little hazy. Crack out to PCGS/NGC? 😱
Not Crackin - but may cross over.
I have 1872 trade dollars how much the value now
How are these not worth more? Seems like a bit of a sleeper coin?
If a coin of this vintage is not from a proof-only year, how do you tell if the coin is a proof? Circulated proof coins from this time period often look essentially the same as the non-proof coins to my uneducated eye.
It can be pretty tough - some coins have diagnostics that will help, but others are difficult.
Picked up 1876 s 1st obverse 2nd reverse. What the heck ?
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🍻👃🏻
Ben...you really did not explain sufficiently how to detect a proof coin through visual examination rather than relying on the Red Book telling one of the years only proofs were minted. A slightly circulated coin can have reflective field surfaces as well so how can graders tell a proof from a business struck coin in years with both strikes?
I got called out - and rightfully so. If this were not a proof only issue it would be really hard to convince anyone that it is a proof.
i have trade dollar 1876
