These are made in the same way as my lumber rack: ibuildit.ca/projects/how-to-make-a-simple-lumber-rack/ How strong? Depends upon how strong you need - using more supports will greatly increase the strength. See the lumber rack article (with video) for an example.
I made your lumber rack today as my first project, thanks for the easy directions! Had to use my circular saw since the table saw hasn’t arrived, but it looks good! Thanks again Sir!
The shelves were quick and fairly easy to make. They are also practical for use, and reused material you didn't have to pay much money for or free. All in all, you hit the sweet spot!
I like these shelves. And since I watched your scrap bin video first, I think it’s worth mentioning that both the music and your haircut are also inspiring.
I was just thinking that particle board would sag... then sure enough, you add strength to it. Good detail on the process of hanging stuff. Just by watchin you over the years I have gotten smarter in the way I do things. Thanks John!
John your video on how to make a wooden nut has comments blocked. So I came here to thank u for that video. Method 1 was great for me. Good video and it was great u showed when things don t go as expected. Thkz!
I'm one of those folks who overbuilds everything, I think. It must be my training as an engineer. Too many books, not enough shop time. Thanks for challenging my over-build mentality!
Now that was easy enough. Sleek and simple design there John. May want to invite Matthias over for his signature jump test. Thanks and keep them coming. I just love watching these builds.
No matter how simple the project is, i always get something out of it, sometimes techniques sometimes ideas and here definitly inspiration for my messy garage/workspace. So thank you again John for the Quality video's but also the Well documented articles , it's always in the video description and not enough People bother to read it, their loss because it's almost a Google for diy .
I did it like this and if I put too much weight the solid wood shelf supports started cracking (I used fir). Then I glued 6mm (1/4") plywood on both sides and it really made a difference.
Hello young man. A friend asked if I wanted some old worktops. No was the answer. Changed it to yes as they will do for the use you intended. Nice one.
Great SHELVES ! It reminds me of one similar by Matthias. I appreciate the use of screws instead of joinery . It makes it simple and easy for a homeowner to replicate. Thanks for the video John!
Had to watch this a second time to see what all the music fuss was about. The only music I heard was your impact driver going to town. Thanks for another great tip video.
As there's no plans to purchase [I wouldn't see the need for plans, anyway] I can only say thanks John, for the concept. My little tool storage shed is so much more compacted and tidied by these very practical shelves. Thanks again.
Hello John. Great project man. Now... to the star of this video: "The Music". I LOVE it!!!!! made me feel like I was learning something so simple and gave me a "Kindergarten Cop" meeting the kids on the first day feel. Good Morning Mr. Kimble... LOL. I hope this type of music will "be bach" in your next video... Cheers mate
Nice shelves, very simple. In mind I saw you laughing as you were adding the music while editing this video... not sure how accurate that is, but I got a kick out of it.
Hi John, I'm sure you know how much weight those standards will hold. For lumber racks I typically skip the horizontal shelf. The boards on the shelf do a fine job. Love the music, and the silent-movie-music in the "more progress" video.
Your limiting factor for strength here is the plywood....if the screws pull through and/or the glue just pulls the fibers apart under a load.....what that load might be, who knows. Love the simplicity Thanks John!
They look very similar to the shelves I built in my work trailer. I used some old oak chair rail that was given to me for the front and just half inch osb for the shelves. The only difference is my center two supports I put legs on down to the floor. Holds all the weight I can pack on them with ease.
Love that Aruca plywood shown on first cut at miter saw. Two years ago it was 35-40 bucks a sheet at Home Depot. The next year it was 75. Now I don't know if they carry it.
I have built similar shelves in the past and held up for years and years with little to no problem. Loved the music, just wish you had shared what it was and where you got it.
The nail gun thing you use, does that need a separate air compressor to use it? They look great! I’m trying to do some for my daughters room, but the walls are solid brick. Going to have to be creative, so I don’t have to drill into the walls too much 😅
Love the "annoying music" and the the "haircut". Spoiled it though with that shelf building piece. What was that in there for? LOLGreat job as usual John
Good instructive video. Are there any devices for sounding out studs? I recently fixed a TV bracket for my daughter but it was difficult. Sounding then using Brad awl to check. The studs weren't where I thought they were!
Legit question and not criticism: Would you want to include any kind of adhesive or strength to makeup for the fact that the screws are going into endgrain? Or would these be stronger if you arranged it so that the screws were entering long grain instead? Or do you think the shear point of the screws is lower than the wood splitting and giving out?
The music reminds me of the movie "inside out" (joy's theme) - I like it. I think that top shelves are only for storing beavers anyway... (they don't need to be strong, just sufficiently high)
Longer open time. Does cure slower Has gap filling properties Works / cures at lower temps too. These are the things John likes about it.... I'll add: works on still damp pressure treated lumber.... The caulking gun dispenser is kinda fun.... All around good stuff. Might not be quite as strong as say Titebond III when bonding say face grain to face grain of 2 pieces of prepared red oak (one of the strongest glued joints out there as it happens - see the vid about glue by King's Fine Woodworking ... he has a link to the actual study which was done.
I'm not "strengthparanoid" but here in Spain wood is poor quality, soft nordic pine is usual, I guess. I suggest tilting the screws a little so that they do not completely cut the grain of the wood. I have had bad experiences attacking the wood in grain direction. It is sure that the more supports, the less load, then the more strong. Anyway this does not vary or complicate your idea. Nice work, clean and easy.
With the shelves being between walls is there a reason you didn't simply screw cleats to the side walls instead of making the brackets for the ends? Great project, when I saw the thumbnail I kept thinking "Have I seen this?, Is this his lumber rack?". Thanks.
Good point. My original intent was to mount the brackets about 6" away from the corners and leave the ends of the shelves to overhang, but decided that the corner was ugly and needed to be covered. I also wasn't sure if I wanted the shelves to go all the way from wall to wall when I first started. Cleats mounted directly on the walls at the ends would work best.
only problem i have is if the drywall or studs aren't all perfectly in plane you can't adjust the standards/brackets to create brackets that are in plane with eachother
I've been scouring videos to learn how to make these and your video is the best! But maybe u could go over this video and tell us what ur doing while ur cutting. I mean, I get what you did, but I would be able to understand even better if I knew exactly what ur doing and I can translate it to what I need. I need to make a few 4"shelves.
Are you shelves about 4ft? Mine are going in my house and I figure I need enough braces to hit all the studs that are within the shelf length. If really just like to know how thick ur braces are
At 1:00 really? Guess you don't value your fingers all that much. I Like the video, but c'mon. That's just playing roulette with your hands. It'll get ya one of these times. Push sticks!
Doesn’t get any simpler. That’s why you should watch this channel. No BS from a rookie building to store bowling balls and gold bricks. If you are looking for another option check out Jay Bates version. He uses black pipe for shelf supports which gives you more shelves in total. Johns supports take up more room. Not criticizing John of course, just mentioning another easy option if you own a drill press.

Really simple and effective. The new haircut and music are great too.
Cheers John, an appropriately timed build, I must sort my tool storage out and these shelves look strong but unobtrusive enough to do the job.
Now that was easy enough. Sleek and simple design there John. May want to invite Matthias over for his signature jump test. Thanks and keep them coming. I just love watching these builds.

TL;DR
I am moving to a new house soon. I will likely use this design for some shelves. My neighbor just gave me a ton of hardwood. Thanks John!
Very nice John, simple and straight forward.
I did it like this and if I put too much weight the solid wood shelf supports started cracking (I used fir). Then I glued 6mm (1/4") plywood on both sides and it really made a difference.
Perfect musical arrangement it totally complements the bulid. Kudos.
Hello young man. A friend asked if I wanted some old worktops. No was the answer. Changed it to yes as they will do for the use you intended. Nice one.
Nice simple strong build.always a pleasure to watch. Building with common sense,it isn't done that much anymore
Nice touch at the end covering the face! Thanks for the vid
Nice touch with edge trimming. Strangely enough, I really enjoyed this new music, hehe.
Nice quick project! Thanks for sharing! I liked the finishing touch at the end.
As promised, quick and easy. Nice work. Oh, I like the music too...kinda reminded me of a Disney theme song.
Good project and I like the music.
Those look like they'll definitely stand the weight and test of time. Nicely done.
Thanks for the video. 👍
YOu made bettter shelves out of scrap than most productions companies can out of new materials. I';; take 3 sets. Great work John.
Absolutely great brackets. I get a kick from people that always over build things especially shelves by using 2x4s.
Easy and simple. I am thinking about how I can use them in my garage. Another great idea. Thank you!
I have a lot of scraps and am in need of storage shelving thanks for the build a simple no nonsense build John. Keep them coming 👍
As there's no plans to purchase [I wouldn't see the need for plans, anyway] I can only say thanks John, for the concept. My little tool storage shed is so much more compacted and tidied by these very practical shelves. Thanks again.
Simple, compact, no messing around with braces that get in the way!
Quick, easy and do the job well. Thanks John.
i had not thought about building shelves like this as did not think they would hold up BUT you put me write thank you
This just blew my mind. You made it look so easy! Looking forward to doing it tomorrow 😎 thanks heaps!!
Elegant geometry during that build.
Another good one sir...also enjoyed the music

Nice and simple bracket design. OMG that music....
Those shelves should hold up well, I think people underestimate screws-as-joinery. The new music is very disney!
Disney was my FIRST thought with the music, also. He made it work.
Great video John, nice work as usual. Two thumbs up!
Nice shelves, very simple. In mind I saw you laughing as you were adding the music while editing this video... not sure how accurate that is, but I got a kick out of it.

Hi John,
Very neat close fit & straight, yes the hair cut as well, hi from Coventry in the UK.
Haha, love it, Stewart from Potters Green.
Stewart McManus
Hi from Walsgrave Coventry.
Your limiting factor for strength here is the plywood....if the screws pull through and/or the glue just pulls the fibers apart under a load.....what that load might be, who knows.
Love the simplicity
Thanks John!
Those are some fine shelves, John!
John, you are the master of music!
Nice project and not fancy but it works... I too like the music, a nice touch!
They look very similar to the shelves I built in my work trailer. I used some old oak chair rail that was given to me for the front and just half inch osb for the shelves. The only difference is my center two supports I put legs on down to the floor. Holds all the weight I can pack on them with ease.
Looks good and beefy. Nice practical build.
Thanks for the video and shelving ideas! More importantly, thanks for your time.
I dig the clean simple design. I may borrow the plan for my shed, if you don’t mind.
i like that design, Thanks John
Thank you :)
Nice job John.
Love that Aruca plywood shown on first cut at miter saw. Two years ago it was 35-40 bucks a sheet at Home Depot. The next year it was 75. Now I don't know if they carry it.
I need to make a few sets of these. Nice and simple
The music felt like we were all going on an adventure!
Hahahaha so true
Great build I love the things you do!!
Nice job, thinking of making them but
just curious on their load capacity
Thanks John 👍🏼
I have built similar shelves in the past and held up for years and years with little to no problem. Loved the music, just wish you had shared what it was and where you got it.
Don't see what all the noise is about John. as usual good basic building sense that we all have seen from you over the years. keep well matey
Excellent John.......Nice....

Darn cool brackets.
Loved the music!
love the music as you rip at 1:06
Found it! Thanks John!
John...what degree of cut did you use for your shelf brackets? Thanks
Legit question and not criticism: Would you want to include any kind of adhesive or strength to makeup for the fact that the screws are going into endgrain? Looking good👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love it thanks!
After this music I don't need to go on vacation 😉
I'm wondering what kind of wood you used for the shelf brackets, and can these be made with just hand tools?
Simple enough shelves for a simple taks... how much weight do you estimate they will hold? Anything you would change in the future?
Sup John. Happy 4th brother! I've been wondering why u like construction adhesives so much. Is it better than wood glue?
Longer open time.
Does cure slower
Has gap filling properties
Works / cures at lower temps too.
These are the things John likes about it....
I'll add:
works on still damp pressure treated lumber....

What music did u play at the finish?? Farmen?
PL, 2 long brads, and 2 screws. Definitely strong! lol

Awesome!!!
GREAT music, I thought I was climbing a mountain with Mary Poppins
Perfect!

Build it John build it---
I like it
At 1:00 really? Guess you don't value your fingers all that much. I Like the video, but c'mon. That's just playing roulette with your hands. It'll get ya one of these times. Push sticks!
But with the tight spacing you can't give them the old jump test, like the biscuit shelves. :(
The music has to have more COWBELL!!!

This video is in... English. I believe John lives in the... Country. I do not know if he has a... Garden. ;)
Ha! I see what you did there!
Music? I’m confused. Who made this video? 😂
Also - I liked it.
Every time you cut something I look away lol
Music from here: ruclips.net/video/vDA19CRK3NQ/видео.html
I noticed that you don't counter bore your screws, take a little more time and make a much stronger joint.
