I know that BRAVEHEART was historically inaccurate, but I don't think the film was made for historical accuracy. I think it was a romantic film that showed how a patriot lost his love aNd replaced it with war, only to be faced with someone equally as beautiful and with strength of character, but war had already taken the place if love. That is why he could not let his heart be softened again. Even this young princess, in this scene, secretly hoped that they could be together in the future. It's possible Wallace - who once told her he saw his late wife's strength and sPirit in her - also felt love for her, but had since committed his heart to his men and his cause. Think of it as a romanticized version of historical events.
The film was done to manipulate people and make money in the process. Still a masterpiece, but it's important to keep in mind the actual intentions. Same goes for Apocalypto (the manipulation part).
This scene is sad. Wallace knows Longshanks has no intent of allowing him to live if he swears mercy and he knows his death will be the cost of fighting for Scotland's freedom.
"Perhaps even live in a tower. In time, who knows what will happen. If you could just live.." It's short for "Lower your head, swallow your pride for now because I am going to France and have my brother send me an army to overthrow my gender-confused husband and I'll set you free and we'll be happy together.."
No one of that time in Wallace’s position would have surrendered to Edward the Longshanks. That would have been a fate worse than death, knowing that the only reason that William Wallace, the defender and high protector of Scotland, would still be alive was because of the king who committed all forms of egregious injustices towards the Scots. That is assuming he would survive. Even if the princess did succeed in overthrowing her “gender-confused husband,” and they were to be together, he would still have to live the rest of his life with that knowledge.
These lines are positively like those of the Great Bard himself, and that is no compliment. William S. was always having great line spoken by people who in a million years, would never have uttered them....

This quote is much more than just the literal meaning. "Every man dies," is basically acknowledging everyone at some point dies. "Not every man really lives," is saying that not all people live their lives to the fullest, without cowardice. By accepting his death and not giving into the King, he is actually living his life to the fullest. Edit: I see a lot of people saying this was obvious. I actually never figured it out until I saw it explained. It gave the scene in the movie much more meaning once I learned it.
