The HTC EVO 4G was a game-changer when is was introduced, in 2010. And it's still a damn fine phone, and all (if not more,) than most people need. True, it's battery life is not great, but you could fix that by tweaking it's settings.
I remember buying this phone on the day or on one of the days following its release on sprint. I thought It was so badass, I spent the rest of the work day sitting on the toilet at work just to play with the phone
this was my first smartphone ... this thing was a beast at the time. HTC for some reason isn't as in demand as you would think when you really think about what they've done. 1st phone over 4 inches at 4.3 which was at the time huge. 8 megapixel cam when everyone else had 3.5mp and if you were lucky 5mp. Kickstand, mini hdmi, and tons more. A year later everyone caught up and my Evo slowed up noticably for some reason but still was a great phone at the time.
Sprint is my first cellular company & I've been with em 12 years come December. They recently informed me that I'm eligibale to upgrade out of my soon to be obsolete Blackberry & I'm having a hard time deciding between the EVO & the new I phone 4. All I really want is the best phone for streaming videos from RUclips & maybe even Netflix & the best drive-by navigation.
Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S II came out (in the US) 16 months after the HTC EVO 4G was released. The SGSII's display is bigger, at 4.5-inches vs. 4.3-inches. However, they both have identical 480 x 800 resolution. No question that the SGSII is a more advanced phone, but the EVO 4G was a monster in its day and a groundbreaking Android phone. Bob at Wirefly
Hi PrynceCuban, The options that are displayed are normally set by the version of Android and the version of the HTC user interface that you are running. You might be running a different version of Android than the phone in this video. I don't think you can manually change the options that come up when you press the power button. -Scott at Wirefly
The EVO 4G is going on two years old, so it has had numerous updates. At least a couple of those updates claimed to help battery life. Other than than, I don't have any information on them. You should be sure that the one you get is updated to Android 2.3, which will improve performance and operation. Good luck! Bob at Wirefly
@lizzio98 No, the EVO 4G does not have a slide-out keyboard. However, Sprint has the HTC EVO Shift that *does* have a slide-out keyboard. Bob at Wirefly
@silkander Thanks for pointing this out. In our tests in the DC area (not official 4G), we were usually getting about 2x 3G speed. Sprint 4G, under optimal conditions, is capable of delivering up to about 10x 3G speed.
OMG, I'm hoping to have this phone for Christmas. I wanted an iphone, but I think this one may be better. I also like the little kickstand - great idea. :)
One thing i notice while playing with it is that if you take a picture with the 1.3 camera in the front, the image comes out mirrored, meaning any writing or that comes out on the background or whatever will come out backwards, according to the sprint rep i met said they might have to take the phone to sprint store to get the camera replaced cause it will have an effect for people that use it for video conference and stuff. I thought that would be crazy tho
@wirefly I'm wondering if two separate scores need to be provided: one indoors and one outdoors, since the high-freq WiMax is likely to have problems penetrating walls. Personally, I think the 4G capability is a turn off for this phone. It adds mass and cost to the phone, without really providing much benefit imho
Bob, thank you for the quick responses. I'm really anxious to get my phone this Monday, and wanted to get as much info as possible. I hear due to a lot of user complaints regarding battery life, HTC and Sprint released an update that helped improve the battery. Do you have any info on this, or can confirm this information?
i literally cannot wait for this phone, i ran over to best buy the second they announced pre-order ... but android definetly took a couple pages out of the spb mobile shell ... which ive had on my touch pro for a while now .. that feature where you can see all the home pages at once is real old ... you can do that with the spb mobile shell interface also ... you can also view it as a carousel .... but i still cant wait .. this phone looks crazyyyyyyyyyy
Um.. I have that exact phone but when I hold down the power button I only get the options to power off, go into airplane mode, and restart phone. How do I get more options??
Hi iTzZL30, I did a little research and found that not to be a common issue. First try disabling roaming and see if it picks up the Sprint signal then. If it is not picking up Sprints signal when you turn off the roaming I would have it checked out at a Sprint store. Here are some instructions to turn the roaming off if you need them. Hope this helps and let me know what happens. -Scott at Wirelfy
@FungKu94 Well, the US version of the EVO 4G probably wouldn't work in the UK, as it is CDMA and WiMax, not GSM and LTE. Also, the EVO 4G is $139 when you get a new 2-year service contract. Without a contract (such as in your case) it's $490. Sounds about the same. Bob at Wirefly
best review of this phone so far ... but 2 questions ...#1 even tho the front facing camera is worse quality is it still 720 video through the front or only 720 in the back ? and #2 can i totally remove that ugly clock on the homepage and fill the whole screen with widgets ?
good review man. i want this phone so bad. @wirefly, do you have any information on any new phones coming to sprint before september or in september?? cause thats when my uprade is. or is this the best phone to get?
I think so. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the EVO 4G can show whatever is on its display to a TV via HDMI. Bob at Wirefly
Hi aywill55, I believe the EVO 4G comes with Android 2.1 out of the box so it would need to be updated to 2.2 or 2.3 to get the Google Play store. Both of those updates are available for free download over the air through your phone. -Scott at Wirefly
Hi Demetria Amira, It will work with Temple Run and to hook it to your TV you would use the micro HDMI port on the phone with a micro HDMI cable and that will get you going. -Scott at Wirefly
is this phones touchscreen as sensitive as the iphones touchscreen? Because iv used the iphones touchscreen plenty of times and i love how senstive the screen is to touch and i was hoping this phone was just as sensitive
I have a question. On my Evo, there's no 3g. Just roam and 4g. I just want to know if that's something up with the phone itself, or something with my plan. Thanks in advance.
@wirefly ok thanks also how would i go about keeping the same number i have if i buy it on your website im currently with tmobile and my contract is up but I want to keep the same number
That's a new one on me... I've texted quite a few times and never had it switch language. You should probably check your Android settings and make sure you have the correct language set. (Not sure if there is such a setting, but it can't hurt to check.) Otherwise, take your phone to a Sprint store to have it looked at. Bob at Wirefly
Yes. This is an Android phone, so the "app market" is now called Google Play. It used to be called the "Android Market, " but that was too simple. So Google changed it to "Google Play" just to create lots of confusion. Bob at Wirefly
Hi cameron smith, The EVO 4G is on the approved list to update to the Google Play store from the Android Market. So while your EVO 4G might come with the Android Market, you can update to Google Play for free. -Scott at Wirefly
to wirefly. if i buy this phone on your website how does it go about insurance and also i get a discount with sprint from my job on the monthly bill how would you guys go about that also
@HOWIITT Only if Sprint has facilities in the UK, or is partnered with a local company that uses the same CDMA technology that Sprint uses. The HTC EVO 4G uses CDMA for 3G connection and WiMax for 4G connection. Most of the world uses GSM for 3G/4G and LTE for 4G, and these are all incompatible technologies. You can never get a CDMA phone to work on a GSM network, and vice versa. Hope that helps! Bob at Wirefly
@Jensenholic No, I don't think the EVO 4G will work in Germany. The EVO 4G uses technology called CDMA, and most European countries use technology called GSM. They are incompatible and can't be made to work. However, you should go to a Sprint store and have them check if there is an available CDMA network in the part of Germany where you will be. If it's a US military installation, there might be CDMA. Bob at Wirefly
hi guys, i'm from greece and i wonder weather this phone can work on 3g networks cause in europe we don't have 4g networks yet. and how can i buy it, is there a possibility to buy it from the states without having a contract, buying just the devise?
@sosick25k yes, my friend's phone does that too ( its a HTC HD2 btw ) Let's say you start surfing away from your home screen on 11:51 and you return to your home screen 3 minutes later, it will change from 51 to 54 :)
@rockxcore1 Yes, that's really easy. Take a photo, then display it from the phone's "gallery." While the photo is displaying, touch the Menu button and select the "Set as" choice. That will walk you right through the process. Bob at Wirefly
@MJEoooMJE Definitely. The If you have 4G turned on in the EVO 4G, it will switch automatically between 4G and 3G operation as you move into and out of 4G coverage. The EVO 4G works great in 3G areas. Bob at Wirefly
@156Frenger Yes and no. The EVO 4G can be unlocked, but it can never be made to work on T-Mobile. Sprint and T-Mobile use completely different technology and frequency bands. The phones from one will never work on the other. (FWIW, Sprint and Verizon use similar technology for 3G operation.) Bob at Wirefly
Does anybody know how the speaker quality is? Is it Good like the Motorola droid, or Droid Incredible or is it low like the Nexus one? Also does it have signal related issues like the Droid Incredible?

2 years later, and this phone is still considered Sprint's most popular device! I'm getting it this week (switching from the Optimus S). I can't wait!
@360SIC Yes, the headphone jack is 3.5mm. Years ago, that connector was called "1/8-inch" but it's now called "3.5mm".

this has been the best review i have seen on this magnificent phone...finally someone shows the keyboard!
I've been wanting to get one. This is the best review I've seen. Definitely getting one now.

I love the wallpaper of your phone. How did u get that light moving round and round on that wallpaper?
Hi BMACp16,
The HTC EVO 4G has a good processor and decent amount of RAM. I did not experience any lag while using this phone.
-Scott at Wirefly
I am so glad that I pre ordered my evo today....I am tickledpink and cant wait until it comes in to radio shack Fri morning..
What is the best phone out right now for each company as far as capabilities.
Any estimate as to when you guys @ Wirefly will restock on this phone?
Awesome! So long AT&T. Sprint, I'm coming after 3 years of iPhone goodness.
I've had fun with iPhones over the years but it's time for a change am getting the HTC EVO 4G!

i got to play with a working evo phone few days ago, it is awesome, cant wait till june 4th.
Bob, thank you for the quick responses. I'm really anxious to get my phone this Monday, and wanted to get as much info as possible.

I'm ordering this phone in 2 days! Dude I'm sooo pumped! :) this phone totally murdered the iPhone!
Goodbye iPhone, Hello Evo ♥

Glad that you like your new EVO 4G. What is your favorite thing about it?
-Scott at Wirefly
good review man.
i want this phone so bad. @wirefly, do you have any information on any new phones coming to sprint before september or in september?? cause thats when my uprade is. or is this the best phone to get?
Are there any known issues I should be aware of, outside of the battery life? I know how to manage battery life quite well.
Is there any way to disable that green led that constantly flashes?
I think so. I'm sure someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the EVO 4G can show whatever is on its display to a TV via HDMI.

Has it got the play store
Not hating on Iphone's cut and paste, but the one on the EVO is pretty sick. Really justifies not having a trackball or pad.
Wirefly's reviews are absolutely the best!
@jusjus115 My understanding is that Netflix is now available for the HTC EVO 4G.
Bob at Wirefly
How is the battery? scale of 1-10 please and how many hours

@MJEoooMJE Definitely. The If you have 4G turned on in the EVO 4G, it will switch automatically between 4G and 3G operation as you move into and out of 4G coverage. The EVO 4G works great in 3G areas.

@tekboi12 Me too. I just found out that Sprint stores are opening up at 8am to sell this phone.
@jusjus115 Yes, the EVO 4G has a front-facing camera.

I just ordered mine yesterday but from radioshack they had a great price. I can't wait to get on that bad boy lol!!!
@156Frenger Yes and no. The EVO 4G can be unlocked, but it can never be made to work on T-Mobile. Sprint and T-Mobile use completely different technology and frequency bands. The phones from one will never work on the other. (FWIW, Sprint and Verizon use similar technology for 3G operation.)
