    PVC board has way better bonding when scuffed. Use fiberglass resin thickened with cabosil for bonding to wood/ fiberglass / carbon fiber surfaces. Use router to round edges then lightly sand with 220 to perfection. Also can be painted with epoxy when sanded with 220. I run mechanic dept. for a world class yacht builder and we went away from starboard and now just buy 4' by 8' sheets of 1/2" and 3/4" PVC board for all our mechanical/electrical mounts. PVC board is also cheaper.

    It’s a great product for marine applications.
    Tip: Never cross-cut any material using a table saw as seen in this video. Use a miter saw or a cross cut sled with a table saw. Very dangerous cross cutting against the fence like that.

    • @kenk8215

      The most dangerous part was putting a hand on each side of the piece and using the rip fence. Never use a fence while making a cross cut and only keep your hand on the piece where the miter gauge is.

    I just recently got into boating and being a snow plower, we have a high density plastic snow plow blades that is used for interlock driveways, instead of standard steel plow blades that is going to chip the interlock brick corners. Once these blades are worn down we just set them aside. But now I found out these can be used as an alternative for starboard. They are generally at least 1/2" thick and after fully worn down, is still at least 3 inches wide.

  • @philmapockitz8216

    For panels & dressy areas I'm an acrylic guy. For cabinetry/structural components i use starboard & for cleats & reinforcements, mounting blocks to fiberglass etc. I use pvc board it bonds amazingly with 5200 and you can fasten (screw) your starboard to pvc.
    Also pvc board is available at HD & very light weight & inexpensive.
    You know starboard bends & is rugged but if you scribe the surface or score it well enough you can snap it clean apart. You can also router the edges, sand the texture off finishing with a 600grit & polish to a smooth shiny finish.
    With a gameplan, tools. determination, & creativity your possibilities are endless. Peace Y'all

    Notes: learn to scribe in order to match an uneven surface......It’s simple to do - every carpenter/ tiler knows how - Your Starboard pieces will match any uneven/ curved/ or intricate shape perfectly.....
    Finally - running a straight, razor on edge (or run the edge through a jointer - if you have one) Razor scraping the edge of the starboard BEFORE you rout will give you a perfectly machined edge....
    Best

    The “Stern Saver” transducer mounting block is has 4 or 6 holes in the side glued to the boat to provide mechanical adhesion with a 2 part epoxy. Just fill the holes with epoxy and leave a small hump at each screw hole and push it on they have been in use for years with no issues so I think it will work ok if there's a decent texture to stick too. If you need to glue down something to make a support to screw too get a 1x2 piece of vinyl trim from HD it is also waterproof but can glued down and screwed into.

      Put supports under it, but might just be using too big of a piece, which is why it sags :/

    Yeah starboard is nice, but crazy expensive. Even ordering off of Amazon with discounted prices a 2 ft by 4 ft piece of the stuff at 3/4 in is nearly $300. Whereas an entire 4x8 sheet of wood texture PVC board is about 200. Not to mention it's easier to bond PVC because of glues that are made specifically for PVC. HDPE barely sticks to anything, and even though some epoxies will work with it, if you want to make a solid seam with a waterproof Bond you're better off with the PVC as there are specific cements that make the pieces into one piece like bonding acrylic.

  • @thediplomasta5891
    @thediplomasta5891 2 года назад +1

    A 4x8 sheet of starboard is $700. So factor THAT into your starboard project. 😅 Anyone who sells it should cut it down to the size you need, but it's still more expensive than wood. If you're worried about wood rot, then don't use softwood pine! You can build your project out of a nice hardwood, like red oak. Hardwoods don't rot. They're much more durable than softwood. Termites don't eat hardwoods. And hardwood is still cheaper than starboard. Just some food for thought.

    3. questions.
    1. Can I use for floorboard on my aluminum chieftain I'm restoring? And can I install I/o carpet to it??
    2. Can I use to replace cabin bulk head??
    3. Where do I get this stuff?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 года назад +1

      1.) You probably could, it's basically the same as what a Triumph is made out of, but there are some set backs to doing this, being that it is plastic and over time with heat it can warp! Idk about the carpet attachment.
      2.) Bulk heads, that is questionable, but just plain walls in the cabin, sure!
      3.) Online or we have it at Home Depot here. So, it depends on your location!

    What is the diffrence between starboard and uhmw plastic?
    (Ultra high molecular weight.)
    In a lumber mill I worked in we used uhmw for slick sliding bearing type situations. As a way to reduce friction between moving steel trays

    • @michael931

      UHMW is a denser type of HDPE. it wears better in bearing applications.

    • @captainjayc9217
      @captainjayc9217 4 года назад +3

      That would be too flexible. If you want it to be stiff, you will need to use thick Starboard -- that will be too heavy. No, you don't want to do that.

      captainjayc Thank you. I have a 1980 fiberglass Glastron. Any recommendations for redoing the floor?

    • @BornAgainBoating
      @BornAgainBoating  4 года назад

      No, I wouldn't do that :( when it comes to redoing the floor, sadly you need to cut it out reglass in new wood or coosa. I think Andy with @boatworkstoday has some videos redoing some floors :) that's a big job!

    • @captainjayc9217
      @captainjayc9217 4 года назад

      @@NickYack I assume you need to redo the floor because the core material is rotten. May be you can see if you can get access to the bottom of the floor. I am under the impression that this is easier to replace the core from the bottom. Then you can don't need to worry about putting on the "finish". If you try to replace the core material from the top, you will have to refinish the surface -- that is a lot of work (sanding, sanding, sanding, and more sanding). Someone used to suggest to me that people can separate the top shell of the fiberglass boat from the hull, flip it upside down, replace the core material in the floor, put the fiberglass back, minimum sanding, and then put some primer and paint over it, finally right side up the top shell. I didn't do this way because that seems to demand a lot of equipment to haul the top shell out of the boat. I decided to work from the top, and that leaded to my comments about endless sanding. But you may want to ask the expert in this area to help you to redo the floor instead of doing this yourself _if_ he has the proper equipment and can do this cheaper than you can. Compare the price and see if this may be a better choice. Working from the top also has one problem: With the top skin and the rotten core material removed, all you have left is the bottom skin. The problem is that the bottom skin may be very thin and cannot support itself. Therefore, it cannot maintain the original curve of the floor. Then you need to figure out a way to support the bottom skin from below. This can be complicated. You only want to work on the floor from the top if the area is small. But you never know. When you open up the floor, you may find that the rotten area extends far and wide, and was coming from the source that you didn't expect. This becomes a big job and now you don't have the option of flipping the top shell of the boat because the floor has already been opened up. You are stuck, and you have to work from the top. Therefore, you need to correctly assess the extent of the problem before making the decision.

    • @BornAgainBoating

      You can buy non-skidded boards, idk if starboard makes them, but its basically the same thing that Triumph's were made out of. Idk how much of it you want to use when it comes to decking though. Just because it is a plastic, and in the sun, it can warp when used in huge pieces like that. :/
