1978 Journey. Infinity had been released in January; this show is in June. The great Aynsley Dunbar was still in the group. Neal Schon is raw, playing the Look Into the Future and the Next material along with Infinity ♾.
Gregg Rolie is great, vocal and organ.
Saw them at the Cow Palace New Years Eve 1977-78.Their last concert with the first three albums played. Then at The Old Waldorf, with a set by the original band and Perry coming out near the end. Hearing the new material for the first time. Awesome.
Those were magical days.
Thanks for this show. Musical history.
The Journey continues.....
Thanks for sharing
Anyone who experienced these times of Journey with Perry's performances and this line up from 78-80 including myself as a pre-teen couldn't believe what they were hearing/seeing live. Masters at work putting on an amazing show: Rockin and Fearless per vocals and musicianship. This is actually my favorite Journey era: Not to say 81-86 were not amazing but this was the line-up per Perry/Rolie vocals and showmanship. Just on fire and electric live! No auto tuner, no enhancement tricks, no need for anything but 5 amazing musicians to go out and play and be this phenomenal!
Yes , and I feel very fortunate to have experienced it all !!
Totally agree with you.
Nailed it! 🔥🔥🔥🔥💗💖🎶💞💕♥️🎶🔥🔥🔥🙏🏼🔥🔥
I saw journey in 78 for the first time. Spoiled right of the gate. Ur right i couldn't believe what i was seeing and hearing
Steve Perry's voice is unforgettable. 😁
I saw Journey twice with Steve Perry, Ross, Neil and Steve and their timing was precise! It was our joy to watch them perform!
I am still listing 40 years later with Steve's No Erasin'
Me too!! Beena fan of Perry,s for ever!!!
I wish I could hit that like button a million times. It's magic, pure magic.
Magnificent
How on earth does Steve still have the pipes and control to sing Patiently and lights at the very end of the concert, especially when they'd been on the road for months? Incredible.
I am never disappointed listening to Steve Perry sing...and Neal Schon is a freakin' monster on the guitar! 1978! What a year! I could go on and on about this band...Greg Rolie was amazing too! Thanks for finding this gem❤
All that power from Steve Perry came from his correct breathing technique. His combination of great vocals and the passion he felt made him one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
to the girls, yes
Absolutely right Jackie!! Learning his correct breathing technique has helped my singing dramatically. High notes are far more powerful sounding and I can hold them longer than I could before. Happy New Year Jackie!!!
great! your high ! Greg Rollie was much fucking better anyday of the week put down that crack pipe Lady
Don't be jealous, men! ;)
Steve added so much , Gregg and steve's Harmony's put them on the map with the Infinity Album...
Infinity, their best album to date and my personal favorite. Their first 3 albums were top notch as far as musicianship and Infinity just captured those 3 albums by making them more listener friendly with Steve as the lead vocalist. This was their best line up and with Steve and Gregg sharing vocals it was stellar.
My all time favorite Journey song is a deep track off of Infinity, Winds of March. I originally had Infinity on 8-track and wore it out.
@@Alastriona Agreed. Had the 8 Track and Vinyl. And yes, played both to death.
YES, YES and YES! The best Journey lineup!
Yesss! Totally agree with you. This stuff is incredible… I don’t know anyone else, especially not in today’s music, that can even come close. It’s magic!!!
I love the way Steve doesn't try to over sing or over power the others, and he could easily do it too. EASILY. But, he understands (at this point) its a team effort.
we need a LOVE button!!!
Steve Perry kills it on Patiently. Best rock vocalist of all time. He still sounds great on the CD he just put out 40 years later, love the song “ no more crying”
when he gets to the one in a million part, that's one of my favorite moments in all of music.
He was not rock he was mainstream music!
@@robertlopez4821 They were progressive rock/blues they were ahead of their time, experimenting with concept driven lyrics, musical compositions and their musicianship was phenomenal by the time “Infinity” came around their sound became more pop/rock.
@@laureenpimentel1128 calling them ahead of their time is quite a stretch and I doubt it’s ever been said by anyone who wasn’t a massive Journey fan.
Yes, King Crimson and Gentle Giant had been pioneering prog at a much higher level prior to Journey’s existence.
Easy to love for me and I need you which he rock so good
I was 7 at this time ...7 and I love them. Even at 7 years old I would have Steve as my boyfriend 🥰 Obviously wasn't old enough to completely understand but learnt to love journey pre-teen and so grateful I get to watch this. Thank you for sharing. So glad I found this ...grateful fan 💕❣️💞 Happy to say I am now 51 and would still have Steve for my boyfriend 🥰😍 watching in 2022 and forever
The original with the added Steve Perry. Doesn't get much better then this.
Not original....but original as most people know. The original line up in 1973 included rhythm guitarist George Tickner and drummer Prairie Prince.
@@bobschaar5720 that lineup never recorded an album together.
Winds of March is a masterpiece.
I was in the second row at the Long Beach Arena when a girl on her boyfriends shoulders threw a dozen red roses all over Steve Perry when he sang the opening lines to winds of march [ I covered you with roses like the stars at night ].. It was magic...
Agreed. They were so much more raw. Schon especially. His sound totally thinned out over the years.
@@williamweiss6128 Raw yes, but i think his sound more evolved than it did thin out. He had several memorable solos that had a lot of feel to it, as opposed to just filler (not that anything was actually "filler", all great playing but just more raucus). Stone in Love, Who's Crying Now, Send Her My Love. Very emotional guitar that blends in, suits the feel of the song well. After that... Yeah. I think all musicians though reach the point of diminishing returns eventually though.
@@WayPastCrazy2525 it can be great to go back and use like a 58 LP, Plexi, you know, old school, slow it down, let it sing.
I couldn't agree more.....In my opinion, one of Neil's greatest guitar solos.
I'm 65 and listen to Steve Perry journey all-day from 77 tours🎧

The best era of Journey
Neal's guitar solo was an instrumental version of Leon Russell's "A Song For You."
@@kimmasuen4107 Neal Schon's guitar solo was an instrumental version of Leon Russell's track "A Song For You" a big hit for Donny Hathaway.
Wow! What a gem! In my opinion, their best era. The combination of Rollie and Perry is awesome.
And the great Dunbar was still there.🥁🥁🥁
Was at this concert, Starcastle was the warm up band. The show pamphlet says "Steve Perry soon to be a household name". THE understatement of that year!
DAMNED RIGHT !!!
Starcastle was great , i saw them open for Boston off their first Album at the Long Beach Arena..
When they added Steve perry to the lineup, they were truly complete, right on, Gregg never should have left
I was wondering if this was a show where Van Halen opened for them. I wish a film crew had captured that moment!
monkface no Starcastle warmed up Journey in this night. It was amazing
22:25-31:20. Holy shit. Prime live renditions of Winds of March and Wheel in the Sky.
Years ago I went to a Journey concert. I went to the front of the stage as soon as they were done playing and as soon as I saw I had a clear shot I ran across the stage right up to Aynsleys drum set! He just looked at me and I told him I was a huge fan of his. I asked for a drumstick and he handed both of them to me. I thanked him and then was asked to leave by security! I still have them to this day.
Aynsley was my first real drum hero, when I started playing at 8. Even though Infinity was Journey's 4th album, it was my introduction to the band, I was only a pup. When I saw that Soundstage performance a short time later, it blew me away. But YOU got to meet Aynsley! What he played on Infinity was so stripped down 'cos he had to serve the songs they were doing. But you dig into the back catalog...if he had won the coin toss and became Hendrix's drummer, one could only imagine!!!! But hey, great story dude. Long live rock!!!!
Today.... Hello jailtime with a criminal record to boot no doubt.
@@patrickbrent642 ... Why did he leave the band to be replaced by Smith?
@@WayPastCrazy2525 Actually, I believe he was fired...
@@WayPastCrazy2525 It was said is "over played"
I love the way Perry phrases live. It's identifiable with the album but he adds a little extra flourish.
One of the best Journey performances of all time. Listen and Share, a true Classic for eternity
I saw this tour May 78 in PDX Oregon, my last day senior year HS, such a great memory but seeing this really brings it back, Rolie and Perry sharing vocals are my favorite era, and Ansley Dunbar?? dude is killing it! what a talented line up, harmony vocals, they had everything.
Best line-up they ever had. 🤘🤘🤘
if you grew up in the 70's, this is journey.
Holy shit those live harmonies are out of this world
This is what real music is. No auto tuned crap, just pure talent. Perry and Rolie are amazing.
Coulda used a little autotune in a couple of parts.....
@@ellavaderknowsDiscordo, quem tem talento não precisa.
Somebody please invent a time machine fast!
Ana Park U said it ... I can only dream.
Ana Park How awesome would that be 💗
And man invented the time machine named RUclips ❤️
Actually RUclips is my time machine of music
WHAT AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE BY JOURNEY!!!!!🤘🙌
Aynsley best journey drummer 🎧💯
i had seen JOURNEY band in live concert after released the INFINITY album ... so awesome with STEVE PERRY , NEAL SCHON and those guys are super ... super ....super good ....!!!!!long live rock... long live JOURNEY
The original Journey sound like a mixture of Cream, and the Beatles on steroids!
Ross and Aynsley holding down the rhythm while adding powerful improvisation.
Neal Schon sounds like Eric Clapton at the next level. Eric even said as much to Neal himself, when he invited him to join Derek and the Dominos. After Neal sat in with them at Berkeley Community Theater, but Neal of course, went with Santana.
So powerful, melodic and inspiring ✨
Steve Perry then added powerful vocals. And they were off to the races!
It is never too late for the Grammy's to come to their senses to award Steve Perry what he deserves in the field of music
I don't care what anyone says
Journey will never be be the same. The lead singer they have now is OK but no it is not Journey. They just are not Journey anymore they where the best back in the day but that day is gone
If you listen and imagine that Perry did this for years, you understand that he blew his vocal cords out at 10 years. Sorry Steve and thank you.
@@josephmondzak5670 ... I have to disagree ... Steve did not "blow out his vocal cords at 10 years" ... sure he was burnt out from the grueling touring they were doing, & had lost his passion for music, & he had to take care of himself & his own health (which I totally respect him for doing & am so thankful he did ... look how many rock stars ruined their health & even lost their lives becoming strung out on drugs & the wild rock life) ... but even at age 70, the man still has a powerful voice & can still hit high notes ... maybe he can't hit all the same exact ones he did back then, but tell me who could after 35-40 years ?? ... Steve's new music proves to me he's still the man, & most definitely still The Voice !!
💜💜💜💜💜🎶🎶🎤🎶🎶💜💜💜💜💜
** STEVE PERRY IS STILL "THE VOICE" !!! PHENOMENAL VOCALIST !!! HE NEVER BLEW OUT HIS VOCAL TALENT !!! ❤❤😊😊
Make up your mind fn rocks! Love all the Infinity stuff too!.. my favorite Journey album!
I can only assume we are watching this through a haze of pot smoke. Lol
And coke feelings
Actually it’s the quality of video we had back in the late ‘70’s. I got my first color TV in 1980.
I had never heard a band LIVE sound like their albums. They were the real deal.❤
I went to an all day concert on August 26, 1978 at Angel Stadium in California. The headliner was ELO, there were three other bands that day and Journey just blew me away. When Steve sang Wheel in the sky, I was a fan for life!
tell ya who doesn't get enough credit for Journey is Greg Rolie! That guy is an amazing musician in his own right and has penned some of the most notable songs on the planet. This band needed each player when you remove one its not the same, as you see when Jon Cain entered in 1980. But this ...this...was the shit in it's day! Schon rules!
Totally agree. Although Escape is a brilliant album I've said for years when Greg left, Steve and Neal lost the soul of the band. Journey became more and more commercial because of Cain. Even though Greg wasn't on Escape it really was the last hint of the Journey I loved.
But Greg was like Jon Lord and Christine McVie, they refused to go synth full-time in 1981. Jon and Christine kept their jobs. Steve Winwood was able to transition but not many.
agreed!
If not for him you'se wouldn't had a journey
Yeah, I'm torn as to whether Cain was a symptom or a cause. They went wimpier, with a few exceptions. Did Cain help facilitate them wimping out, or was he a cause? Or did he merely come along at a time when they'd already decided to go more pop, less hard rock?
The Voice of Steve Perry and the wonderful guitar shredding of Neal Schon set this band apart from all! With Metal hair bands coming into popularity and the music world changing its way of running itself, this band was a god send!
Ahhh I just fall in love all over again. Iol. Hi Steve Perry Ahhh.
Absofuckinglutely loved the way they dressed in the 70's
Mark Garno yessss!!! Missed being thin, rocking my bells and belly shirts ahhh to go back 40 yrs
Yeeeeeeees, bellbottoms are coming back, been seeing alot of them recently, PEACE
I still wear bellbottoms yo's
Schon, Perry,Valory,Dunbar,Rollie . Yes indeed
From my favorite album of theirs, Infinity. The one that truly put them on the map.
THE VOICE! 🎤🎵🎵👏👏❤❤
Infinity the best Journey album still to this day
Journeys best lineup!!!
I watch 2 seconds of this video and youtube has to put in an ad right in the middle of the first song. unbelievable .
JOURNEY. ROCKING THROUGHOUT TIME & SPACE. & BACK AGAIN TO RE-A-LINE-UP yeesss cause you can still rock in america
I was blessed to see them 3 times . Evolution , Departure and Raised on radio Tour . It was MAGICAL !!!
Best lineup!
This is absolutely fantastic. Every song a masterpiece. But there’s just something about the song “Opened The Door”...it’s incredible and I just want to hear it over and over again. 🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
WhhOOOOAAAHHHH
MMYYYMMMYYYY
OHHHH YEAH !!!!!
Thank You STEVIE ROCKIN IT
The /???? labeled by poster after Next is just the ending of the song. It could simply be labeled La Do Da> Next. From 1974 to 1978 Journey was one of the most mind blowing, incredible, talented and significant bands on the planet. Their first three albums, as well as Infinity, are landmarks in American progressive music. The British prog bands from the 70's get all the credit, along with Rush (and very rightfully so) but there are two American bands that were just as formidable and influential to us younf music nerds at the time. Journey from 1974 to 1978 and Kansas from 1974 to 1980ish. Life changing....salvation...life SAVING music I tell you.
+Anthony Phillips agreed
+Anthony Phillips Indeed, we forget for some reason. But this is "psychedelic music nonetheless" - this is where it went, and some of the best at that!
+Anthony Phillips - I agree with you regarding Journey. Their best music, essentially, was prior to Steve Perry. From progressive rock, down to the gutter of "Bubble Gum" style pop music with the addition of Perry.
Bands such as Rush credit the early instrumental work of Journey as an influence in some of their song writing. Totally agree with you on this.
I'd add Boston to the short list for that approx time period.
Phenomenal
ansley dunbar, great drummer !
The band was stellar at this point in time
I love watching my dad, he gave you guys a true gift for a life time and more; Thank You!!!
Your dad?
Race 52 yes who's your dad ?
Race 52 For real, What do you mean watching your dad ? Who would that be ?
Race 52 ???
What?! Dad?! Who?! Man, you better give us some more info!!!
What a gem!
So sad they didn’t include Something to hide! My favorite right now ❤️
they did that live?
@@chaseharlann I didn't know they didn't play that live when I wrote that comment haha.
My favorite too
Something to hide written by Perry
At time 42:00, while trying to make up their mind who is going to sing, Neil leaves the atmosphere........one of the best Schon performance ever..this is classic.
Absolutely great time 1978. Saw them on July 4th 1978 open for the Stones, then the Super Summer 78 with Tom Petty in Binghamton after a 4 hour downpour. And 3 more times in there's with the iconic Holleder Stadium show in Rochester ny. All with Steve Perry. Too bad big egos get in the way of what got them where they are. Won't see them without Perry and Rolie ever again.
Schon finally had what he'd dreamed of: A world-class band.
Saw this Journey tour at the Fabulous Fox in ATL in 1978. Believe it or not VAN HALEN opened (first album tour), followed by Ronnie Montrose ("Open Fire" album) and then Journey promoting their "Infinity" album. A night to remember for sure.
I saw the same lineup at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa on 4-22-1978. Aynsley Dunbar was my favorite drummer and Eddie Van Halen quickly became my second favorite guitarist (behind Ritchie Blackmore). To see VH on their first tour and Dunbar with Journey again (saw them 5-9-1975 with Ian Hunter/Mick Ronson and Aerosmith) was a great night.
THANK YOU SO VERY
MUCH!!👏👏👏
I just stumbled upon this! It is fantastic! I was just a kid and had just begun going to concerts Pablo Cruise, Eddie Money, Chuck Mangione, and George Benson among them. I just began hearing Journey. 1979 was my the official start of my Journey fandom. Have been ever since.
On a Saturday night sounds incredible with perry's added harmonies. This band was incredible with this lineup.
I saw this tour as a teen, 2nd row in Flint MI. I still have the awesome pictures I took when cameras were not allowed at concerts. 😂
Love 1978-80 Journey
Sensational!! OMG I love this!!!
Neal Schon is,was & will always be the driving force that is Journey..It was UNREAL watching him unleash those solos back in the day..The fact that he still does it today, for the fans,is an absolute bonus..One of the GREATEST..Ever
Neal Schon sure sounds good in this one. What an awesome guitarist!!
One of my biggest regrets is not seeing Journey in their prime, some call them a wimpy band, wrong, they were a great rock band. Neal Schon is one of the best guitarist of all time, and Steve Perry was awesome.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if all differences were put aside and they played together again! 🎤🎶🎶♥️ 🎸
With exception of Valory who got thrown out a couple of years back, It's not differences as Schon played all this stuff recently with Rolie in Journey Through Time. Perry couldn't last 10 minutes singing any of that now. Not sure what Dunbar is up to.
Steve P not just the voice but it worked night in and out…

"Drive Safely"
Fucking awesome way to end a good 'ol rock show.
I really miss the old "daze".
Wow, they were on fire!
The matchless talent of Steve Perry!
Wow !!! Excelente Regalo!!! Comienzos de Steve Perry!!! en realidad siempre hizo la diferencia!!! Excelente Bravo por Journey!!!

Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie at their best!
It's awesome how they incorporated Steve into some of the older material on vocals, like "Next."

the best line up------ the great aynsley Dunbar
By the way Dunbar is burning it, gregg is the bomb on the keys, Ross is the boss on bass, Neal is a god on guitar and Steve is a god on vocals.

So raw and just plain Classic. This is the first time i saw Journey on this Tour of the infinity album at the Long Beach Arena, i was in High School...
Steve first year, I saw some of the Avalon ballroom jam. Love Winds of March from Chicago.
Schon with the Afro and Gregg Rolie = Good Times.....
what an incredible treat ! i was only 1- when this came out but discovered them as a teen and have loved them ever since. This was by far and away their best album ever. I have never seen a full concert of this only clips. Thanks !
I love this concert, I was 15 when they they did the Infinity tour, wish I could have been 18 at this time, I would've been there!!!
