Just make sure it’s not your flute that’s the issue! Any slight problem can greatly affect such high notes coming out. Otherwise, whatever you may doing wrong probably can be easily fixed, in order for you to get out a high b flat

@@jelly6077 if you continue playing into college take lessons. It'll take your playing from a moderate level to a top level. And a teacher will work with you on technique and proper air support, posture, embouchure placement, etc. A public school band setting isn't going to do that for you. I didn't know until college that my right thumb was position was wrong and that it was slowing my playing down. I've learned so much more from a private lesson teacher than I ever did from my band director in hs. If music is something you want to go to school for private lessons is a must investment. That and a good quality flute. My starter flute was a Yamaha and it was good but it wasn't good enough for the level I'm wanting to play at. So when I could I invested in a Gemeinhardt flute, gold lip plate, silver, open hole, and a b foot joint. Best investment and I'm so comfortable with the brand. I love my flute now.

Hmmm... i started playing flute when I was 12~13. Im in university now and am not able to play music much anymore. Every time i pick up my flute im filled with frustration at how bad I’ve gotten. I remember in high school I was so self conscious about all my playing because I had friends who were all really good musicians, and I started so late and was never able to afford lessons. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss it. Every time I watch your videos I get inspired to go put my flute together and fumble around for a bit. This video was particularly interesting because it is clear the difference years of practice can make. Progress feels so slow for me when playing flute (or tenor sax, as I picked that up my sophomore year of high school and, due to instrumentation issues, have more opportunities to play that than flute), but this shows me that even just honking whenever I can is progress, because im not giving up! If that makes any sense lmao. What a cute video! Thanks for sharing!

I just returned to music this past month. I started in 8th grade and was just tossed into a band class. Never received lessons, never owned my own flute. In high school band, I was self conscious too but the band program was so underfunded and undersupported we usually had an avg of 2/3 flute players and there was one year where I was literally the only flute player (we resorted to being a jazz ensemble haha.) After high school I didn't have a flute anymore and would occasionally play on a shitty one my friend had. I missed it so much but didn't have the money to cough up to rent one. This year, at 21 (4th year in college) I mustered up the motivation and decided to rent a flute and play again (it helps that at my uni there are free flute lessons for nonmajors) and although I get frustrated at my sound quality I have been so happy and am improving so much by having someone guiding me, giving me helpful tips, and playing with me. We all don't have the privilege of having a teacher. (I know there's RUclips but it's nice to have someone physically there)

@@gloriacoodood2287 how's clarinet been? I feel like my own high school band experience is not like a lot of people's experience but you'll never be alone in the clarinet section and you'll have other players to help you out when you don't know how to do a specific rhythm or fingering or something. You'll only get better! Do you play songs you like in your free time? But yeah, for me high school band wasn't terribly difficult (we didn't go to a lot of competitions or anything, maybe only twice a year) but that's because we didn't have the support and thus we didn't play highly advanced music. These freshman flute players around me in college are way better than me LOL. I know because I just joined a flute choir haha. Good for them though. We are all at different levels and no one is bad, just at a different time in their progress :-)

    • @hipeople9856
      @hipeople9856 5 лет назад +9

Hi! Flute here. I know it's not a video, but here's some tips.
•Work on your embouchure (can't spell it well, sorry) as one of your first steps. Even if you can easily remember the fingerings, you won't be able to get a proper sound out if you don't position your mouth right.
•Start learning notes that are on the scale first. I learned B flat, A, and G first. Then, I would recommend doing slightly higher and lower notes, and gradually expanding your range. You will have to change the shape of your mouth slightly depending on the note.
•Dont give up, even if it's hard. I couldn't get a proper sound out if a flute for a while after I started. It took me a bit to be able to low and really high notes, too.
•Work on your air flow and breathing. You will most likely get light headed. That's normal. Adjust how much air you use based on the note. Find what works.
•Learn basic pieces and songs first. Don't immediately go for Beethoven and Mozart and such. Work on the basics first, eventually, you'll be able to play harder songs.
•Scales. Learn them. They are great for warming up, getting ready, etc.
•Always warm up before you tune. Play for a bit until your flute is warm, then tune, either based off of other flutes, an app, or one of the ones they often have in band rooms. If you tune before you warm up, your flute can become slightly off (it either becomes flat or sharp. I can't remember).
Good luck if you do start flute!

The thing about flute angle is that it's highly dependent on the flautist. They want you to keep it parallel to the ground in marching band because the flute is a very visual instrument, and everyone needs to look the same. But, in concert band, the best for your tone quality and sound isn't going to be parallel to the ground like in marching band. Have you seen Dennis Bouriakov's flute angle? Most band directors should understand that : )

Her: *can play Hungarian Serenade insanely well in 7th Grade*
Me: *using this solo for my college auditions and is having the hardest time with it and begins to feel inferior and thinks that maybe this actually is an easy piece so even if I play it well for my auditions I still won't get in because 7th graders can play it and I, a 12th grader, can barely play it*

10:49 and finally that G I would have renegaded earlier in the piece is at the end of the song. Beautiful 😂 I also get emotional when I play music I remember from elementary and middle school. My college audition piece makes me cry sometimes it’s so beautiful. I was a clarinet player in elementary and middle school and played trumpet in high school and college I’m a professional trumpet player today although I do own/play 12 other instruments (including a flute. That I actually purchased and began playing about 2 months ago. I got it home and looked up a flute tutorial and I’ve been watching your channel ever since and will continue to do so lol

I played the flute for about 7 years and quit when my mentor changed job-location since I had trouble seeing a new mentor would understand me the same as my former one who had seen me grow up.
BUT while I did play for a mentor, I joined a junior-orchestra and we had many fun activities and even after I quit playing for a mentor, the flute has stuck with me and I play improv in folksong and stuff like that. Also the grips of the flute helped me learn sax quite quickly.
It is very emotional looking back on all the memories from back in the days. All tears and sweat from trying to get those high notes sound great, learning the harder, quicker sheets and stuff like that. Makes me miss having a mentor...

I scored a First Division on a Class I solo, and it was the Bach E flat Major, also when I was only thirteen. The piece you're playing now was one of the many lessons I worked on outside of class and other scheduled auditions. I tinkered around with this one at a much faster tempo. beautiful song I think it sounds better with out the piano because in the video I couldn't really hear you but when you played the song now it's very pretty. I love classical music I've been learning how to play the piano I was in choir in school I've always dreamed of playing the piano I've been playing for a year now I like going through my then and now videos. I used a app called simply piano now I use the piano faber piano adventures method books. I enjoy playing an instrument more than singing
