currently a sophomore in hs let me tell you i LOVE this instrument :( helped me with so many opportunities and learning i would’ve never known previously
I have been playing flute for almost 25 years and actually teach it now. One thing that will greatly help your technique is to work on your hand and wrist placement. Your left hand is too straight vertically which makes it harder to reach the keys. I tell my students to lay the flute in the palm of their hand and then pull their fingers down until they are touching the keys, but keep the same wrist position. Your left palm should be facing up towards your flute to allow for more fluid and quick finger movements. Also make sure your right thumb stays more between the first and 2nd fingers. I like to imagine that it is supporting the 1st trill key in order to determine where it should go. Those are just little changes you can make, but they will help you play much more technically proficient in no time.
I love your tone!! I play flute (started 6th) and piccolo (started freshman), and I'm entering my junior year too! It's crazy how much growth can happen over the course of just a few short years, and I'm truly excited for all the fun opportunities and solos and whatnot that are ahead of you. You picked a great instrument, so keep at it; you're slaying 💜
I play all the major woodwinds, in band I sit next to the oboe as a clarinetist, she never gets called on to play, she just knows when to play, and my director literally plays oboe lol. I’m the only other student oboist at the school so we get to talk about how bad the part is fingering wise etc, so at least it’s not all bad.
I don’t play flute but have played trumpet starting in 7th grade and have been playing throughout high school. I did quit symphonic for my sophomore in favor of focusing on marching band and playing trumpet in any type of band and getting better (self taught) is so fun and I wish I had recorded myself back when I started so I could cringe at myself.
this is my second year playing clarinet and i’m already at an 8th grade level ( started in 6th , now i’m in seventh) and it’s so cool seeing your progress!
Bro that WEEE on the conductor's arm at 2:17 made me choke on my drink lmfao. But that was amazing man, you're doing so good. I played a lot of different instruments in school. 3rd grade I did Recorder, 4th grade was Violin, 5th grade was Alto Sax, then 6th grade - Senior Year I played Tenor Sax. Then this past year for my first year at University, I did Tenor again for Marching Band and Baritone Sax for Concert Band my first semester. Second semester I did Tenor for both Concert and Pep Band. This coming Fall I'm gonna do Tenor again for Marching and then Bass Saxophone for Concert Band. (That thing is so expensive, I've been saving for months now to buy it.)
This is a great video! I was wondering, what band arrangement/song is it called in 1:57? The flute and oboe solo sound amazing. Good job and keep up the great work!
BWAHAHAHAHA THE “Rah RAH” i love that!!! you’ve improved so much!!! i’m starting freshman year on percussion this fall. i hope i sound as great as you! 3:54 i love how that sounds btw it sounds so majestic. what song was that?
Im a flute player of one year (started in 6th grade), and i really think your video just encouraged me to work harder on my playing. Also wish me luck on piccolo fr 😭 ive already lost enough of my hearing lmao
Hey really nice work! My main instrument is the bassoon and I actually made the California all state band on it, but I also play the flute at around your level so I am pretty knowledgeable. When I was at all state some of the things I noticed all these other flute players did was when they tounged, they kept on pushing air through they lungs. What I mean by that is whenever they tounge, the air never stops, it’s just the tounge that stops the air so when the release the tounge sounds immediately just jumps out. It may sound like super basic knowledge but I find that people often use too much energy when they tounge, so just try to be a can of compressed air I guess lol. Also try loosening up your embouchure a bit, don’t restrain the air, let it flow freely through your lips to the instrument. If your embouchure is too tight, it can make your sound feel a bit thin and you will be limited on how much control you have over your dynamics. Other than that, you have done some amazing work these past 4 years!
i started playing flute in 7th grade too!! currently going into my sophomore year of highschool, i was first chair in freshmen band tho💪💪💪💪 you also sound absolutely fabulous
An Amazing progress for a self-taught flutist 👏. I've been playing flute for like 10 years but i didn't play for 3 so it's like 7. And you remind me i must wear earplugs but i just dont have any and it doesn't really bother me, I think my neighbors should be the ones wearing earplugs 😂. Keep practising!
ur scales sound so good I wish i have a school orchestra like that i have one where nobody turns up because the teacher isnt nice and everyone is on the tune aparrt from 2 violins on harmony we dont even have a conductor i mean i get the solos but that is cz oboes always do lol
what is the piece for your solo at the end of your sophomore year I’ve been looking and I can’t find it 😭 also your playing was super good just wish brass didn’t cover you up 😢
im still in 6th grade currently going to 7th grade im going to be the only boy who playes flute in my class next year. I managed to get in to wind enssemble which is better than honors band in my school. im just starting
I have that beginner tone. I’ve only been playing for eleven months (almost a year on July 22nd), but I feel so defeated. I have watched countless videos on how to improve my tone, but none have been helpful. I have that sort of rough, gravelly sound when playing. How did you fix that? I know breath support is a factor (expanding your stomach whilst adding pressure and tightening abdominals) and long tones, but I would just like some advice. Thank you ❤
@@Rhamnousia. I like to play around with the flute positioning to find which sounds the best. Everyone’s lips and bodies are different, adjusting the flute or “rolling out” can help a lot. Another thing that really helped me was purposely playing the ugliest note I could possibly play. Afterwards, I’d reflect on what I did differently to play that ugly note, then I’d try to play the best note I can. By being conscious of what makes a “bad” sound, hopefully we could try to pinpoint what makes the sound more “clear” to ourselves. I also learned that trying too hard to create a clear tone can tense up the body, causing the tone to suffer even more. Try to relax the body and try to play as tension-free as possible, since tension closes up the throat, causing a more pinched or forced sound. Even if you have been playing for 11 months, good tone is something that takes years to improve. I wouldn’t stress it. Keep playing flute!
as a sort-of beginner flute, it's always fun to watch others progressing faster than i ever will. btw, what's the name of the song at 0:41?? i feel like i've heard it before
Your progress was amazing!!! I just wanted to know, how did you learn rhythms and beats? Did you teach yourself or did someone else teach you? I'm a beginner saxophone player and I struggle with understanding rhythms....Do you have any tips?
Hi! I’m mostly self taught, raised off of RUclips. I still need a lot of improvement in my rhythm, but for me: sight reading with a metronome 100% helped. Understanding subdivisions, counting out loud, emphasizing downbeats and writing rhythms down on sheet music is also a great way to practice. There’s lots of videos on RUclips that would help in understanding different time signatures and subdivisions! Good luck on your Saxophone playing!
I like to practice a lot of long tones, scales with a metronome, and a whole lot of small flute pieces on the flutetunes website :) honestly, I got a whole lot better when I was moved up to the higher band since we played a lot more challenging pieces like Hymm to the Sun with the Bear of Mother Earth 😖
Hi! I’m not an expert at flute playing but in general, I use vibrato in both full band playing and in solos. For full band playing, I use vibrato most of the time. It really depends on the piece of music being played and the stylization choice of the song. My band director always encouraged the flutes to vibrato when bringing out a melody or important part of the piece. However, it’s also important to be mindful when using vibrato since it can also become distracting when used in the wrong way or wrong time! Sorry I can’t give too much information since I am self taught student I found this discussion about vibrato and band directors if it helps www.8notes.com/f/25_179386.asp Sorry and hope this helps! 🙂👍
