GERMANY: 28 criminals! Deported to Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban took power!
For the first time since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, Germany has deported people to the country. The deportations took place on Friday morning, explained government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. "These were Afghan nationals, all of whom were convicted criminals who had no right to stay in Germany and against whom deportation orders had been issued."
The "Spiegel" reported that the deportation took place on a chartered plane from Qatar Airways from Leipzig Airport. A spokesman for the Saxon Interior Ministry told the AFP news agency that the flight took off at around 7 a.m. and was due to land in the Afghan capital Kabul around midday. There were 28 Afghan criminals on board the chartered plane.
As "Spiegel" reported, some of the people to be deported were brought to Leipzig from various federal states during the night. The operation was organized by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Each deportee received a cash payment of 1,000 euros before the flight.
Hebestreit explained that in recent months the federal government had "made great efforts to achieve the resumption of returns in such cases and has supported the countries responsible for this purpose". In view of the "notoriously difficult framework conditions", Germany had "asked key regional partners for support to make the return possible. The federal government is very grateful for this support."
Hebestreit also underlined the government's determination to continue to organize "such repatriations." "Germany's security interests clearly outweigh the interest in protecting criminals and dangerous individuals."
Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, there have been no deportations from Germany to the country. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced on Thursday that Germany would implement deportations to Syria and Afghanistan "very soon". A "major repatriation and deportation package" had already been "set in motion" before the deadly attack in Solingen.
A week ago, three people were killed and eight others were injured, some seriously, in a knife attack at a city festival in Solingen. The suspected perpetrator, a 26-year-old Syrian, was arrested on Saturday. The Federal Prosecutor's Office believes the attack had an Islamist background. The case sparked a debate about deportations and possible failures on the part of the authorities.
