This is awesome…Been waiting for Victron to come out with a bigger dc/dc. Yes please let me know when you have it available. I have the 12/12/30 installed and it would be nice to retrofit the 50 in addition to the 30 I already have and run additional wires back to the starting battery. I bet a lot of people have my same scenario. Thank you for all your info you put out.
I'd for sure be curious to see how to have them -50A & 30A versions- work together in both a communicating (with shunt, if feasible) and non-communicating scenari..!

Thank you! I had 2 of the 30 amp units in my Amazon shopping cart. Now I will be ordering this unit from your store. I have watched the 3 overview videos you posted to-date, well 4 months ago! They answered all of my quesrions, and heat would be an issue using the 30 amp DC-DC.

Great news! I have the current 12/12 30A version and sized the system so that I could add a second. One of the things that always bothered me about the older version was that it didn’t support smart networking, so that when I was simultaneously using the DC-DC charger along with my solar charger, the two would not be synchronized in terms of charging. I also didn’t care for the lack of monitoring information. I’m a big fan of using smart networking to keep the various types of chargers all using the same point in the charging profile. I even swapped out a Zamp portable panel solar controller with a victron unit that had smart networking. You may want to make a video explaining smart networking to people if you haven’t already. I use my shunt as the sole charge monitoring source that coordinates/syncs the charging profile of my multiplus, solar, and now DC-DC charging.

That part where it's mentionned a dedicated shunt could be used with the 30A version to get it "smarted" raised the question in my mind as to how it'd be wire to make it work 👍!

The answer to my current needs! The 12-12-30 unit was lacking the output I need and the Votronic 50A charger would not have integrated with the 3 Victron MPPTs, the shunt and Cerbo.
So I will be a patient boy and wait for the arrival of the XS. I had a peek at the manual, but will wait for your video on cabling. ☺

Finally! Had a Sterling in our last van, worked ok once I got it programmed but never saw over about 45A into the battery. The Orion I have now is much easier to program, and charges at an honest 30 (at least until it gets hot 😉), so I’m definitely interested in the 50A version . I’ll be watching for it.
The new Sterling stuff is much better than the old.

Yes, I would love to know when you have these in stock. You have been such a huge help; I would prefer to buy from you when they come out. That is the only reason I was considering preordering from one of those 'places' that is happy to take my money, just so I would be in line to get one, in case they sell out right away as there seems to be quite a bit of interest in them.

Yeah; we talked about doing pre-orders, but ultimately decided that if, say, we had 100 people on our list and only got 50 in March; and then we didn't get another shipment until who knows when... we would be holding peoples money with no guarantee of getting stock; which wouldn't feel ethical.

Grrrr! I just installed two new 30 amp Victron B2B's. Wish I had known about the heat issue before I did that. I'm going to see if Amazon will take them back, then go get two of these new 50A B2B's. Also, the old 30A units don't talk to my Cerbo GX.

Here is a question that I hope you will answer once you get one. Victron says that the Orion XS can be run in either Charger mode or Power Supply mode, selected via the app. Can the Power Supply mode be used to wake up a sleeping BMS? and is the Orion XS powered by the starter battery?

That will be perfect for us! But, we have a 24V house bank so it will need to be the 12-24 version. Question: will it have the ability to stop drawing power if the source battery is down to, like 80% (or something)? I would like to install this on the starter battery for the engine (sailing catamaran) but it can't run the battery down all the way. Thanks!
Well... if properly programmed, the Orion will only be on when the engine is on and therefore when the alternator is charging the starter battery; so there would be no way to drain the starter battery while the alternator is actively running.

I have been having issues with Sterling 1260s. Now on my 3rd unit and need a fourth. Used a junction stud for my Sterling install, so I am already set for the 50 AMP unit. This allows your vehicles alternator to charge the house battery bank when the engine is running. If you don't want that functionality, you don't need this part.
These look like a great replacement for the older Orion-TR's, thanks for the video and explanation - I know a great many people are excited for them to come to market.
For me though it again misses the mark (at east in their announced lineup) that has a 48V battery bank. Victron has some great 48V equipment, and Ive got a lot of it installed, but this DC-DC range is always lacking a 12-48.
As a distributor with seemingly some sway, is it possible to ask why this end of the lineup has never eventuated?
There just simply aren't very many 48V electrical systems in mobile applications (vans, RV's, motorhomes, etc) which is what this product is designed for. Victron is always going to prioritize parts that meets the needs of more people as opposed to the fringe use cases where there isn't enough volume to R&D a new product.
If somebody has a 48V system, that means that, to me, it is a VERY large system (10kVA+ of inverting capacity) and a 700W charger like this one isn't going to be big enough to re-fill the batteries in any useful amount of time and a dedicated secondary 48V alternator with external regulator (wakespeed or similar) should be used.

I run a winch on my truck and have two batteries starter and house. Currently they are connected with a VCR and switch that enables me to put power from the house battery to the starter battery if my starter battery struggles.
What would I need additionally to enable this useful feature using the Vitron DC to DC charger. Many thanks

Very cool. I have been waiting for this unit. Can it work with a temperature probe like the Smart Solar charge regulator to prevent charging under a given temp?
Ok, found the answer on the spec sheet. The unit will actually stop charging below a given temperature to protect lithium batteries. It looks like it does not even need an external probe (to be verified).
Can we run these in a dual setup without Cerbo or a dedicated shunt and still get combined charging data in Connect over Bluetooth?

Can the output amperage be adjusted at all at all through the app or display?
I see different answers online and was hoping to get a solid answer from you. Do I need to run a NEG cable from my battery to the RV (via connector in same area as 7-pin) or can I eliminate that cable run (and cost) and simply pick up NEG from inside the RV?
With a 50A charger, you'll need to run dedicated positive and negative 4ga wires from the starter battery of the tow vehicle all the way back to the orion located near the RV batteries with an Anderson Connector at the hitch. A 50A charger is far too large for the 7 pin connector.
What are your thoughts on the new Renogy DCC50S 12V 50A Dual Input DC to DC Battery Charger that can also take up to 50v solar input? It is apparently only available in Australia right now, but it's rumored to be on the verge of being marketed here in the U.S.
Can I use a DC-DC charger between the 2nd and 3rd battery banks without any alternator involved on both side? Does it have to be connected to the first battery charged by the alternator?

I use a 14s 48 volt (58) lithium box in my cabin, charged with 3 solar panels in series. I want to be able to charge this 14s box with my truck. Can I get two 12/24 isolated dc to dc chargers, wire one charger to cell #1 to cell #7 (24 volt) And wire the other charger to cell #7 to cell #14 (24 volt). #7 connection would be a positive for one controller and a neg for other controller? 14s BMS has a balancer.

If this had bi-directional charging ability and isolated it would be the DC/DC charger to rule them all. But even without that it's still king of the heap.
I have the newer Sterling DC/DC and really like it but this is better.

Reminder: You can still combine multiple older DC-DC units to increase amperage capacity. In my case, I'm going from 12V to 24V so there is not an XS version available yet for that voltage as far as I know.

My 12-12 18 was such a disappointment. I wish I had done more research as I found out later that so many people were let down with victron's offering.
Anyway, this one sounds awesome. One thing I don't think you mentioned was if it has a variable output. Like how you can vary the output on the smartsolar CCs. I would buy it in a heartbeat if you could adjust the output.

What exactly was disappointing about the 1212-18? I have a 1212-18, too, but not yet installed. Now, as this Orion XS is announced I will switch to the XS model and sell the 1212-18. But it would be interesting, what was wrong with the previous model.
@@Daniel-fc6sv it doesn't do ve networking so can't leverage the shunt or charge in unison with other victron stuff. It's a dumb unit. Very un smart.
But my biggest complaint was how as soon as it got warm the output would drop to about 10a. Which is pretty pathetic if you have a lot of charging to do. Where mine was installed was not well ventilated but other people I know with dcdc chargers ranging from redarc to projecta don't seem to have these kinds of derating issues
@@andrewford80Thanks a lot! I thought, the 18A version wouldnt have the thermal problems as the 30A model. Thats why I went for the smaller version, since I have not that much (cooling) space neither. However, the new Orion XS has an efficiency of 98.5% - which is really good. So I will go for this one an level it down to 20A-30A - so hopefully there will be no thermal issues.

I think they're ok if you can attach some active cooling fans and people in the victron forums have created 3d prints of brackets for fans etc.
But my location is small and I don't know if I'd have room for active cooling.

This is awesome. I have a sort of related question. Perhaps a bit general and relates to the old unit as well. If you charge from a stock 12v vehicle alternator but have a 48v battery bank, would you then simply run an Orion DC converter and step up post Orion XS charger? Or is that so ridiculously inefficient that you'd better get a 48v DC to DC Charger?
Nope. Has to go to a battery directly. Otherwise the charger would know the battery bank voltage and what to charge at.

Being my system sized for a 30A max charge, will it be possible to limit the Orion XS 50 output (and corresponding input) to max 30A?
The manual says its output can be limited but wanted to be sure I got it right!

I planned for a 3-pulley, 270 amp secondary alternator with a wakespeed in my 12v system, but haven’t gotten to that stage so not purchased. Two of these DC-DC would only be 100 amps in contrast, but a simpler install I think. What are your thoughts as I saw you mentioned the wakespeed IRT a 48v system?
DC DC chargers will for sure be an easier installation without a doubt, in exchange for slower charging. It's just up to what is needed. I'd say that DC DC Chargers over secondary alternators are more appropriate for 99.4% of the installations we advise on.
Hi. Great video. Until a few days ago I'd never heard of BtoB, only split charge systems. I've done some research (brain is now fried) and found the Victron Orion XS is about to be released. On my existing split charge system I have a 100Ah 12V Gel leisure battery with a maximum charging current of 20A. I know the new XS is 50A but it can be reduced in the app. I can't find anywhere just how low that setting can go. Will I be able to reduce it as low as 20A? Or will I need to upgrade my leisure battery to a Lithium that can accept at least 50A?
