I am an old carpenter and when these Makita 9.6 drills came out it was a sort of miracle for us. We had seen various and sundry cordless tools and other devices BUT this was the first drill strong enough and durable enough to handle commercial work. Everything before this was not strong enough to be much more than a toy for a professional carpenter. Took me about a year after they came out to get one but once I had one I couldn't believe it took me so long to get it. It was an expensive tool probably $500 in today's money. But if you have never used a real cordless drill before it was stupendous and worth every penny. It was the first time any of us were free of a power cord with a power tool!!!!!! I think it is hard for people born in the last 30 years to really grasp that. And not just any power tool I still have my original drill I think I bought sometime between 1980-83. It came with two batteries a charger and that nice metal case like yours. It had no clutch or torque adjust no variable speed just a high low gearing a reverse forward switch and that's it. But that drill is indestructible it still works fine I cleaned it out a few times and re-lubed it but it could still do what it was designed to do right now. They are so good Makita still sells new batteries for them because the drill will not stop. That drill was made to augment a corded drill, the technology simply was not there to make a drill that could drill quickly through your 4x4 test but it would make short work of an untreated 2x piece of lumbar and it will drive most any screw in low gear. I also have a later model with a clutch same thing still works perfectly. The old right angle 9.6 Makita is almost the perfect tool for finish work, there the long battery adds to the tools ergonomics and it has the same build quality, will last forever. As far as the forward reverse switch it took me years to adjust to the newer forward reverse switch and caused many hundreds of curse words. I always found that switch to be in the perfect place I did not have to look, change my hand position, or even move a finger, trigger and switch in the same spot a flick of my index finger, I think that is where that switch should be, and still miss it in newer drills. You just are not used to it being where it should be.
This Makita cordless drill was really the first to open the eyes to all companies to make cordless drill tools. I bought my first makita cordless drill back in 1991. I still have it on my shelf. I just can't part with it. I also have the my first brick Motorola cell phone, man I'm old, LOL... Thanks for the flash back...

Electrician Apprentice here! The boss told me this was the one he used when he started as an apprentice at 18 (27 years ago) what’s cool is I just got myself one of these from Value Village for $7! Only missing the chuck key and the extra battery but everything is in working order and it was such a great deal for a newer apprentice like myself (1 year and a half in) as a quick starter drill while I’m saving up for a newer one like the rest of my company uses!
i bought mine at a garage sale with case and 2 batteries but one won't charge. It was probably 1998 and I got it for $15 still using it today. absolutely the best drill I've ever owned

Makita would come to the store and give us a training class on each of their new tools so we could really push their benefits. These things pretty much sold themselves and they sold (and were stolen) like hotcakes. We had a hard time keeping them in stock.
That adjustment you were trying to turn regulates a clutch. The higher the setting the stronger the clutch stays engaged. The drill bit icon setting disengages the clutch completely.
I had one of those back in the 90’s. I don’t remember how I got it. Fast forward nearly 30 years, 5 moves, two houses, and a home theft later, and I found another one in my new house. I don’t know where the heck it came from.

Paul Gilbert actually used the drill before Eddie did but he used it completely different. He put three picks on the end of the drill and used it for picking. This started as a joke in his instructional video. He later went on to use it on a song Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy on the Lean Into It album by Mr Big. On that song he and bassist Billy Sheehan both play using the drills with picks and do a harmony solo. It’s awesome. So I made an EVH drill and use it in both these ways. Who knew a drill would become a rock instrument 😂
Ya I used it everyday for about 6 years I worked for a company that did van and truck conversions then the newer drills came out but it was still old compared to today’s tools but now there so much easier to use all day thanks for that great run down memorie lane
TRZ what a great video. That took me way back when I used to own one. I remember when I used to change the speed from high to low that damn switch used to hurt my fingers all the time. Eventually I burnt the drill up if I'm remembering right it was only a 3/8 drill. I thought I would never hear the sound of that drill again. But you took me back there. Peace brother

I just saw on ebay where you can buy two batteries for twenty bucks so I think I will buy a couple and see what happens. I did not know about the VanHalen thing. Great video
I had one of those drills I loved it cuz the only game on the market at the time coming at work for had one with the exterior door Department and it was very useful I had no complaints at the time of it you take care cheers with a beer
I just inherited one from my grandfather that died by suicide at 88 years old one week ago. What a great piece of equipment. I think you're being a little over the top with your complaints. I don't think it hurts your fingers that much to do everything. Take a breath it's not that bad.
These Makita drills are still perfect for kitchen cabinet installs, or any other precision drilling , the clutch is designed to prevent your wrist from being twisted while pushing screws or drilling, it allows the chuck to stop moving when you hit a snag!
I remember that screw gun with the battery just as big as they handle it actually took up the whole handle space between that and DeWalt old screw guns with the big heavy batteries that weighed more than the tool itself
@@ToolReviewZone can actually keep that battery in your vehicle as a weapon are you guys still have the Maglite for that reason just in case put a battery in your car but I showed you the air compressor did I show you the hammer drill I found in the garbage

I can smell some of the older grease, but not a burning smell. I didn't want to push the batteries to hard as I'll be redoing it for more nostalgia than work purposes. Hope it comes out good
Why are you drllling in a clutch mode? There was an inadequate B&D, when B&D was pro grade that wasn't quite good enough. Makita was the first, often paired with a corded. You can whine like an ignorant baby, but men from the day still love those drills and their ergos, that's where their muscle memory developed. God bless.

I still have my 6012HD that I bought new, and it still works fine. Even though I've owned newer cordless drills it's always there as a backup.
